'Party of No' Obstructs Extending Unemployment Benefits, Democrats Let Them

Posted by BarbinMD, Daily Kos at 10:15 AM on October 21, 2009.

For the second time in a month, the Party of No is screwing over those who need help the most.

While Republicans may be publicly wringing their hands over unemployment numbers (while gleefully calculating how they can use them to their advantage in 2010), they continue to block legislation that would extend unemployment benefits:

Republicans are hoping to attach a number of amendments related to ACORN and immigration — provisions that have delayed floor action on the UI bill indefinitely, according to the offices of both Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

A spokesman from the Majority Leader's office mewls:

It seems as if they aren’t negotiating in good faith on this.

Wow, what insight.

For the second time in a month, the Party of No is screwing over those who need help the most -- but they're getting an able assist from the Party Who Can't Spell Majority:

Senate Democratic leaders have twice tried to get the consent of GOP leaders to pass the bill, only to be shot down over procedural sticking points.

So what happened? Democrats asked for the bill to come to the floor under unanimous consent, and Republicans said no. Of course you can bring a bill to the floor in other ways, such as a motion to proceed, and while that could be filibustered, the leadership isn't bothering to see if Republicans would have the guts to filibuster a bill to extend unemployment benefits at the same time that they're pretending to feel the pain of the jobless.

Digg!

With "No cojones and spineless" Harry Reid as leader, the Dems are totally hopeless. I think it would be far better for the dems to lose the next hundred elections until we can breed sone with guts. I have become so ashamed to be listed as a Dem on my voter registration that I am seriously considering joining another party (not Rep).

At least with the Repugnicans we get a first-rate screwing. With the Dumocrats the screwing is second-rate.

THERE ARE 50 DIFFERENT INTERPRETATIONS OF FEDERAL MATCHING FUND PROGRAMS. ALL

50 can't be right. Honest citizens need the simple option of being able to draw their unemployment from a federal office. No two states interpret SCHIP the same. Parents and children need acess to a federal "option" to their particular states interpretations. If no one contacts their legislators nothing will happen. This idea will stay dead.

Remember that big business has the power to go into a state legislature and just buy enough votes to get what they want. In Texas it isn't even illegal. When the "big boys" say that they are in favor of "states rights", this is what they really mean.

Lagging indicators are not used in the media.

Why not extend the benefits. Other than the obvious, one reason is that the numbers roll off reports sooner. Lagging indicators are not used in the media. It will make the economy look better faster. Pretty smart for evil people.
