Health Care vs. the Right's Health Scare

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 9:10 AM on May 27, 2009.

Conservatives are going after Health Care reform with wildly misleading attacks.

As the debate over health care reform progresses, it was inevitable we'd see some pretty deceptive advertising from the right. But what they've come up with so far tells us quite a bit -- some conservatives, left with no credible options, are just making up nonsense.

There's a project, for example, called "Patients United Now," organized by the same outfit that sponsored Sam "Joe the Plumber" Wurzelbacher's anti-EFCA efforts. The group, Americans for Prosperity, has a new television ad featuring a Canadian woman who said she came to the United States to be treated for brain cancer, because in Canada, she would have had to wait six months to see a specialist, a delay that would have killed her.

To hear the woman tell it, Canada's system is a dystopian nightmare, in which the government forces taxpayers to "wait a year for vital surgeries," and bureaucrats restrict access to medicine and treatments. She concludes by telling the viewer, "Now Washington wants to bring Canadian-style healthcare to the U.S., but government should never come in between your family and your doctor." She encourages Americans, "Don't give up your rights."

Now, I can't speak to the woman's claims about her personal medical experiences; they may very well be true. But as Jonathan Cohn explained, the message of the ad is completely wrong:

For those who'd like a review: Canadian health care has strengths and weaknesses. The strengths include superb primary care, administrative simplicity, and the kind of cradle-to-grave financial security virtually no Americans enjoy now. The weaknesses include some long waits for specialty care -- although statistics suggest Canadians are not, on the whole, ending up in worse health than Americans because of them.

The real lie here, though, is in ad's broader implication: That, by reforming health care, "Washington" (a.k.a. President Obama and his allies) would import "Canadian-style healthcare" and, as a result, deny people life-saving treatment. This is demonstrably false.

Remember, Canada has a single-payer plan -- one in which the government insures everybody directly, with virtually no role for private insurance. No politician with serious influence is talking about creating such a plan here (even though, for the record, I think such a plan could work pretty well if designed properly).... Reformed health care in the U.S. would, in all likelihood, look more like what you find in France, the Netherlands, or Switzerland. These countries don't have problems with chronic waiting times. In fact, access to some services -- particularly primary and emergency care -- is easier and quicker than it is in the U.S. But these countries also make sure everybody has insurance coverage -- and generous coverage at that.

This is consistent with the larger trend. Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina is launching a campaign in opposition to reform, and the message is wildly misleading. Rick Scott's Conservatives for Patients' Rights have ads up, and they're no better.

There's got to be a better way to have this debate.

A Canadian Response

I have also seen the TV ads and they make me laugh until I start to feel very sorry for all the Americans with no or little health care coverage. I can't begin to understand the American fear of so-called "socialized Medicine". I know that I will never lose my home because of the sudden cost of some catastrophic illness. I can go to my doctor or a clinic or the ER at anytime and it does not cost me anything. I have any tests that my doctor, not the government, deems necessary. Yes, I pay indirectly for my health care through taxes which I gladly pay to maintain a system that assures health care that is some of the best in the world. I hope Americans get over the fear-mongering done by ignorant people and profit seeking corporations. Health care should be a basic right for all people, not just those who can afford it.

"...government should never come in between your family and your doctor"

Oh you mean instead of the weasel-penny-pinching-greedy-insurance companies like we have now?

Wake up America. Stop being afraid of your own shadow and read some FACTS for a change.

Americans have heard too many stories of insurance denying care, too many have experienced being denied a prescription because the insurance company didn't want to pay for it. Too many Americans would be shocked that anyone would be stupid enough to risk the huge cost burdens for extended medical care that we have here. Maybe the 29%ers (isn't that the figure of true conservo-republicans we have left?) will buy the line, until they too are denied critical or, at least, helpful care so an insurance company can make a buck.

And this fight is against a group of people that are making money, and lots of it, off the status quo. They're making so much, in fact, that they don't even need health insurance. The same battle happened against the banks providing government backed student loans in the early 1990's. Banks made all the profits and even made out better when the student defaulted on the loans because Uncle Sam was picking up every bit of risk. The fight for the Federal Direct Loan Program was against complete lies about the current program from the very banks making profit off the government. None of those banks went out of business or ceased being profitable because of the program. The guarantee agencies that were skimming money off the government and ruining the credit of students did go under, but they were not providing a valuable service and the market did it's work.

Long and short: Ethical business can make money no matter what, it's time the government remembered who actually needs the help.

wHILE Insurance companies dump billions of dollars into false advertisements, to protect their profits, Millions of Americans have no heatlh care insurance, and millions are under insured. We in this country have always had a form if you will of Socialized Medicine and that is the Veterans system. So don't be afraid, WE NEED A SINGLE PAYER PLAN RUN BY OUR GOVERNMENT, we are the only industrial nation without a single payer plan. Shame on Congress for not protecting the citizens who put them in office. I appeal directly to President Obama, the time is now Mr. President to do the right thing and that is to provide US with a Single Payer Health Care System.
