The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee cleared Hilda Solis' nomination as Secretary of Labor today. The vote by the entire Senate will probably happen this week.

Only two Republicans voted against her -- Pat Roberts and Tom Coburn. Even though Mike Enzi made a stink and said that she was not qualified to be Secretary of Labor because she supported labor, he ultimately voted for her.

Mike Hall of the AFL-CIO blog:

After eight years of the Bush administration's Department of Labor under Elaine Chao—trashing workers' rights, weakening workplace safety rules, ignoring wage and hour violations and siding with Big Business at about every juncture—the idea of a labor secretary siding with workers must be terrifying to some.

Last week I spoke with Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention, who recommended Sarah Palin for the VP slot on the McCain ticket. He said that the GOP was the natural home of socially conservative Hispanics. That pitch is probably going to be a lot more successful if they don't block the only Hispanic woman nominated to a cabinet position because her mechanic husband didn't pay some business taxes, especially when John McCain defaulting on the property taxes for four years on one of his many homes didn't seem to trouble them too much.

Digg!

FINALLY !! Go Solis !

When real progressives step up to the plate, then even the Republicans are forced to come clean. This is why "centrists" and "conservatives" in the Democratic Party deserve to be KICKED out. I wish Solis the best and hope she can break through and bring back some happier days of mercy for the labor class in the USA. She might even make a great president and perhaps lead the way to reforming the Democratic Party and purging the sellouts and warmongers. :)

Every Repug who has used the 'Tax problems' excuse should be investigated

Give me a break if Repugs want independent investigations into not only their tax problems, but their under the table dealings with lobbist of the Big Corps- keep up the BS. Granted the Treasury Sec failing to recognize his Turbo tax error is disconcerting. But Daschle had brought up his mistake to the admin and had told his Acct to rectify it last summer. If the Acct failed then daschel should not only fire him, but report him to the ethics board.
As for Solis' Husbands mere $6,000 lien, which the Repugs obviously needed more time to dig up since they've held her up since Dec, yet only found this issue last week. Clearly indicates they were scraping to find something, anything to disqualifier her.
Between this attempt at Blackmail and Cantors Blatant disrepect for the Gov't Workers, Repugs should be the worried that they will be facing a Tsumani of Recalls. All American Worker, Union & non Union, should be outraged at the Repugs appeasement of Big Business at the Cost to American Workers and Our Economy.
they have sold out our citizens as Indentured Slaves and destroyed our economy to nearly 3rd world levels. they have inflicted a Feudalistic Caste System on Our Free market Democracy. Family Crest or Logo is irrelevant when they are the only ones with Free Access to the Market and can buy elections with their corp contributions. If you are not eligible to Vote (ie Brick & Mortar), You can Not contribute to ANY elected Officials campaign fund. When Corps are granted more influence and power with Public Servants than Those who ARE the 'People', that is Treason. That is Why the most important document penned during our Declaration of Independence from ANY Brick & Mortar Entity began "For the People and By the People", Not the Crown, Not the Corps and Not the Church.
How is it the Repugs can be such advocates for the 'Tax payers' ,yet such Adversaies of the Workers who ARE the Taxpayers.Me's thinks they are not talking about (or to) any of US, just their Self Anointed Corp Crowns

I hope she is the real deal.
Labor is the only thing that will really pull this country up and out of the pit. Fair pay and benefits will bring the balance to politics and build families and the economy.
