A new bill would require the Department of Defense to "grant journalists access to ceremonies honoring fallen military personnel."

Introduced by Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) last month, the bill has six co-sponsors and won the endorsement of the National Press Photographers Association this week. The bill states:

The Secretary of Defense shall grant access to accredited members of the media at military commemoration ceremonies and memorial services conducted by the Armed Forces for members of the Armed Forces who have died on active duty and when the remains of members of the Armed Forces arrive at military installations in the United States.
The current Defense policy, which was updated in 2003, states that there shall be no "media coverage of" the returning war dead.

The darkness of the GWB/CHENEY administration is lifting, this is a beginning. One of a great many to right the wrongs. Thank you God, and please comfort and protect our troops and their families.

Yes, this bill has Republican sponsorship. But does anyone know if President Bush plans to veto it if it gets to him?

This bill is a horror. The media can and will haunt anyone for a story or pictures.. Just what a family needs, a bunch of vulture like photo hacks lurking and snapping pictures and lord know what looney web site they'll appear on.

It's enough that a family gave up a family member, they deserve the privacy that any other family has a right to at a moment like this!

I feel the need to repeat my reply to ChickenHeart above.

No one is haunting the dead...it is now the dead haunting the living for ignoring the fact that they died and leaving it go unreported. No one ever lurked and snapped as you said in the last wars where it was recorded for the public to see the incredible sacrifice the boys made ...it was always handled respectfully.

If we had seen it from the beginning instead of hiding our heads under the sand like ChickenHeart seems to want to do (must be one of those blind who prefer not to know!) maybe we would have been out of this mess so much faster.

Why is it that the Republican politicians think that Americans are so mean spirited as to behave badly? Have they convinced so many that this is true???? It is not true and they know it. They know they have done wrong and want to sweep the boys they considered as disposable (which of them sent even one of their relatives into the fray??) into their graves without anyone having a chance to look sadly upon their caskets with respect and reverence and salute their efforts to do the duty to which they were called. This is what parents who have dealt in child abuse do...sweep it under the carpet. The Bush administration Abused our servicemen and so now we cannot see the victims of this abuse! Wonderful!
