Evan Bayh: Change You Can't Believe In

Bayh in a poor position to make the argument that McCain, Lieberman and Bush were wrong on the war because he was too.

Over at Swampland, Karen Tumulty says that Beltway types are all aflutter about Evan Bayh for the VP slot because of his hard-hitting performance against Joe Lieberman on Fox News recently.

Aside from the fact that Bayh accepts the Republican/Lieberman premise that the war is "winnable," he's in a pretty poor position to make the argument that John McCain, Joe Lieberman and George Bush were wrong on the war because he was too. As Teddy noted yesterday, Bayh not only supported the war, he was an honorary co-chairman (with Lieberman and McCain) of the Committee to Liberate Iraq, a group whose non-Senatorial members included Bill Kristol and James Woolsey.

Talk about ceding the high road.

(Joe Lieberman flushes his toilet on a phone interview with a radio program after the flip)

And speaking of the low road -- Lieberman was on WPLR radio yesterday for an interview with Chaz & AJ. Evidently Joe was conducting the interview on the toilet, and the sound of flushing could be heard in the background.

Fans of the show might want to call in and tell them to relive the glory (they make note of it on their website and are known for "beating a gag to death," according to one of their loyal listeners.)

Joe yammering on the shitter. That would certainly give the Fox & Friends crowd something to chat about, eh?

Digg!

I am one of the few in Indiana that is not in love with Evan Bayh and hopes that Barack Obama will look elsewhere for a running mate. Here in Indiana, in the eye of the storm, it is hard to tell if Bayh is really on the short-short list or if it is just hype for a favorite son. Taking a step back, I can see the advantages of an Obama-Bayh ticket, but I can see the disadvantages also.

First and foremost, Bayh backed Hillary to the hilt. In my opinion, he got into the Presidential race last fall to send a signal to the perceived front runners that "I'm interested in moving up from the Senate". Bayh's campaign never left the ground (I think he did worse that his dad, Birch Bayh, in Iowa) and I think that was o.k. with him. It was a trial balloon.

Second, he is the prototypical Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) candidate. I know Barack is all about bi-partisanship and getting results, but there is a difference between being bi-partisan and being a weak Democrat. To myself, and many others, DLC=weak Democrats.

Third, he went all in for Hillary. He cut an ad for her in Indiana. He was more animated in his joint appearances with her here than he has ever been. His Senatorial staff took a leave of absence from their jobs in Indiana to work for Hillary. Now he's Obama's best friend and confidant? His Indiana press secretary is now Obama's Indiana press secretary. To me, it seems like Evan chose this year to run for vice-president. He put all of his chips on Hillary, and when that crapped out, he went with the eventual winner. When he decided to back Hillary, he made dozens of phone calls to Democratic leaders across Indiana to gather support for her. Evan carries a lot of weight here, so his call cemented the support of much of the Indiana Democratic Party structure for Hillary. The vast majority of those people backed Hillary simply because they saw her as the best chance for a favorite son to move up in the world. Maybe they would do the same for Obama, but are Indiana and our eleven electoral votes that important? I am voting for President, not to pad Evan's resume and help his climb up the ladder.

Please, Barack. Evan is loved here, but you can do better. You have John Edwards' phone number.

Byah is a hawk republican pretending to represent the people here. His supporters are the ultra corporate elite, and he certainly not a for the people Democrat. The "War on Terror" is a lucrative wind fall for him and his Zionist Israel lobby. What's a few hundred thousand innocent murdered lives when there is a buck to be made.
