A Canadian court has sided with Joshua Key, a U.S. soldier and war resister who is seeking asylum, ruling that Key witnessed enough human rights abuses during an eight month tour in Iraq that he could qualify for refugee status.

"This is a real breakthrough," said Lee Zaslofsky of the Toronto-based War Resisters Support Campaign. "What excites us is this may also apply to other war resisters who took part in Iraq."

Joshua Key is just one of over 200 known U.S. soldiers currently residing in Canada in hopes of avoiding deployment to Iraq.
