There is no Iraqi insurgency, military experts say

The good news is that there's no insurgency in Iraq. The bad news is that there's something much worse...

According to the conventional wisdom, the United States is fighting an insurgency in Iraq. In a classic insurgency, a group of guerrillas is trying to overthrow an otherwise-viable government. For an occupying power, the goal of counterinsurgency is to tip the balance in favor of the state and against the insurgents.

A group of military thinkers and Iraq war veterans disputes the claim that the U.S. is waging counterinsurgency in Iraq. They argue that the insurgency has degenerated into a much more complex and chaotic conflict:

[I]n Iraq, "the bulk" of what used to be the insurgents have "now realign[ed] themselves with the American forces" against "the nihilistic-Islamist terrorist Al Qaeda in Iraq," Lt. Col. Douglass Ollivant notes in the latest edition of Perspectives on Politics, which is devoted to a critique of the now-famous counterinsurgency manual. "With the Sunni nationalists at least temporarily allied and AQI deprived of its sanctuary among the Sunni population, just who are the insurgents in Iraq against whom a counterinsurgency might be conducted?"
Instead, what seems to be going on in Iraq is a “competition among ethnic and sectarian communities for power and resources,” as General David Petraeus put it. Shi'ites are fighting Shi'ites; Sunnis are battling Sunnis; splinter groups from both sects are waging a low-level religious war; AQI and other jihadists are stirring chaos; and criminal gangs trying to profit from the mayhem. It's an "extremely difficult and lethal problem," observes Lt. Col. Ollivant, who, until recently, was the chief of planning for U.S. military operations in Baghdad. "But it "is not exactly an insurgency." [Wired, Danger Room]
This distinction has profound implications, and not just in terms of tactics. The rationale for continued U.S. occupation hinges on the pretext that we're fighting to preserve a legitimate, viable Iraqi government. The myth is that the U.S. troops are helping to Iraqis to stand up so that we can stand down. In fact, we're occupying a hostile polity, not supporting a fledgling government.

Digg!

The main enemy is IRAN!

No matter who is killing the US forces in Iraq, Afghanistand and anywhere else in the world, the main enemy is IRAN, it has been and it will always be.

If the US government was not so dumb after 9/11 and went after the true terrorists and their supporters in Pakistan, Duba and Saudi Arabia, the world would have been a much better place.

But instead, they chose to go into Iraq, partially to get rid of Saddam, but mainly to have a solid base in the Arab world, which is not "holy" and "sacred" for those crazy Wahhabies, that way, they can easily attack Iran any time they want, either during Bush or who ever comes after him.

The current administration have learned that "historically" the Baathists and Sunnis are friends of the US, in the long and strategic war against Iran and any independent thinking Arab, they can be the stooges in the war, just like they were during Reagan time.

No supprize. Neither was there any foreign attack here in the US on September 11, 2001. There is now enough evidence to prove that the so called terror attacks was in fact a covert US operation arranged to justify the invasions on countries of the Middle East. The aircraft that were made crash into the WTC were only a show to terrorize the People into supporting the already planned attacks on Afghanistan. The aircraft did not, and could not, cause the buildings to collapse. That was clearly done by skilled professional demolition. Bush, Cheney and their cronies will soon be made to account for their murder and high treason as well as their many crimes against humanity.

This is nothing more than what has been ocurring in Iraq for several years now. The US Military has run out of excuses and fabrications to explain the daily violence, so they have reverted to the truth.

There is nothing we can do and we need to get out immediately.

There was never an insurgency

An insurgency fights a legitimate government, but there was never a legitimate government -- there was a resistance fighting a foreign occupation, and there still is. There are also internecine factions fighting, largely due to the US instigating that in a divide-and-conquer strategy.

Resistance, not insurgency

There is a disunitied resistance to the American presence. This has been the case since the American occupation began. The idea of an insurgency against a state that was supported by the occupation was of course a lie. The Bush regime fears two things primarily: 1. a united resistance; 2. an American public that demands immediate withdrawal. Both of these things are developing, hence the increasing US emphasis on AQI (what the hell that really is) and Iran. Stand by for an air attack on the Iranian armed forces. Its the only thing that might help McCain. The little fascists will tell us that Obama cannot be allowed to control our system. God help us if this scenario plays out.

McCain said that America is winning in Iraq big time. This article is implying that McCain is liar.

Iraq is Babylon...

Iraq functions best under a strongman ruler it's just in their messed up culture and the Iraqis are quick to pick up arms and slaughter each other which is why they are a dysfunctional state..

Breaking them up into three autonomous regions may be best but even then there will be infighting right down to the clan level if not larger..

There needs to be an international authority that over sees and distributes fairly the resources mostly oil as no entity within Iraq can be trusted to do this equitably..

Finally Iraq is Babylon and the United States in no way belongs there and remaining there will be our ruin..

Then who or what are all the 'insurgents' that are getting killed? Maybe we should provide T-shirts that say "I am not an insurgent". I'm just on the way to the store to get milk. It's beyond crazy. They used to be terrorists and evil doers. What next? Time to bring our people home. Thanks, ANNA
