Pelosi Says She Miscalculated GOP Determination on Iraq

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi , D-Calif., admitted Thursday that she had underestimated the willingness of Republicans to stand behind President Bush's Iraq policy despite the drubbing the GOP took in the polls in 2006.

"The assumption I made was that the Republicans would soon see the light," she said. Instead, the minority stuck to the president's war policy in the face of unrelenting pressure from congressional Democrats and powerful lobbying campaigns by anti-war groups.

Bush has consistently refused to accept any limitations on his authority to direct military operations in Iraq, or on funds destined for the war effort. Democrats have been unable to muster enough votes to force him to accept a timetable for withdrawal of combat troops or a change in their mission in Iraq.

"That was a revelation to me, because I felt the American peoples' voices were so strong and still are in this regard that I hoped that with some compromise and reaching out there might be some change in direction," Pelosi said. "But they are sticking with the president on this."

The GOP is organized, it operates as a party. I hate to quote Red State again, but I'm gonna have to:

Let me put this in very stark terms: there is no Democratic Party in Congress. There are, instead, a bare majority of Congressmen and Senators who have banded together in order to gather power, influence, and money. Which is fine, as far as it goes - except that they are not actually using any of the resources that they are gathering to benefit the groups and causes who worked to put them in power. At best they are operating under terms of enlightened self-interest, albeit a very small-minded version of it: they are keeping their geographical constituents as sweet as is necessary to ensure re-election. And the Republicans know all of this, and will use this knowledge to pass the bills that we feel the country needs to thrive. And all of this is why 2007 was such a horrible legislative year for the progressive movement - and why 2008 will be no better for them.

The Democrats don't know how to operate like a party; the Republicans do. The Democrats lost the energy bill by one vote because they couldn't get Mary Landrieu, the most vulnerable Democrat in the Senate who's going to need every bit of help she can get from the party next year not to lose her seat, to toe the line. Cracking the whip, hanging together and using their leverage to enforce party discipline -- it's just not what they do.

Recognizing that this is how the GOP functions is not that tough, it's been evident to many for years, and if anybody thought they were going to abandon Bush (and the war) in sufficient numbers to end it they were kidding themselves.

A realistic appraisal of how the Republicans operate is probably a good first step toward combating them. Acting like a real party is probably a good second.

She clearly does not deserve to be speaker. Madam Speaker is incredibly out of touch with politics in this country and should step down as to allow for an effective speaker that is willing to be more than an historical figure head.

She is one of the biggest disappointments today.
She is exactly what we need to change in Washington. I have written so many letters to this useless woman with not one response! She is exactly what needs to change out there!
I have lost all respect for this woman!

I KNEW the Democrats would give into Bush/Cheney/Republicans time after time right after the 06 election, and that the power balance would not change. What I didn't know was to how much of an extent the Dems would give in. Damn them. (But damn the Republicans more, of course.)

None of the previous posters seem to understand the political system. With a majority of only ONE, it's almost impossible to push through something our "esteemed" asshole of a president doesn't want to support. The only change since the last election is that Bush now has to use his veto power.

But I'm sure you all think your helping by blaming the democrats. Just remember, you are blaming youselves as well - and well deserved blame at that.

on this article and on Pelosi's "I'm just a poor, naive little girl" excuse.

Are we seriously supposed to think the Speaker of the House doesn't understand how legislation works? They don't need the Republicans to stop the war; they only need to NOT pass the funding. That takes only a majority of those voting in the House, and 41 votes to sustain a filibuster in the Senate. The Democrats flatly refuse to try.

The results you see are THEIR REAL AGENDA. Sorry to shout, but some people are having trouble hearing that. This is what they want: they PRETEND to end the war, while making sure it continues; and they hardly even pretend to reverse the rest of Bush's damage, let alone remove him - which is a prerequisite to any real accomplishments.

So, the real question: what are you going to do about it? Whine a lot? Nice title for a Broadway show, that. "Whinealot: The Peace Movement Musical."

The GOP is a party of ideologues, many with skeletons used to control and manipulate them. Reagan's son is gay, Cheney's daughter is a gay married mother and Bush's other "wife," aunt Condi, is both gay and an Uncle Tom yet all three "families" are noted for their anti-gay political stance.
Pedophile priests and gay ministers are outed daily. They all share the same conservative political philosophy: The Ends Justify the Means. The Party of God, (GOP spelled backward)is a party of idiot-ologues who march in lock step to their party platform. All at the top have sold their souls to the Party of God. They are bought and paid for mercenaries of a lesser god willing to sacrifice their first born son to orders from above.
This is not a model for the Democrats to follow any more than the two party system in the US is a model for Democracy.
Making the Democratic Party the same as the GOP is the wrong conclusion. More parties and proportional representation are what is really needed in the US of Dollars. In God We Trust, both parties are the same. Only the degree of their corruption determines who dictates over US.
PS. Is the Statue of Liberty the "Golden Image" from the Book of Daniel?

so what is she going to do to set things right (assuming, of course, that this isn't how she wants things to be)? The first part of accomplishing any goal is to acknowledge that – if it applies – what it is that you are doing wrong.

Now that that part is over, what do you do to bring things in line. Perhaps put impeachment back on the table (and, if necessary, force it down the throats of the rest of the Congress. It will be a bitter meal, but no more so that then crow Democrats have been feasting on as of late), and stop giving Bush the money he wants to fight in Iraq (and I personally don't care how 'well' – remember, we're talking about war here. If wellness has a body count, I am against it – the conflict is going. It's not our country and we need to get our arses out of there).

The Republicans seem well versed in the art of the filibuster, how about Democrats take a few lessons? And if not from them, how about from Chris Dodd, who seems to understand that sometimes you have to do what's right, damn the repercussions (remember, this guy is running for President. He could have just as easily have continued campaigning. Instead he took a stand on an issue vital to the American people).

Good God! Republicans are all crazy sex deviants. Democrats are all complete wimps. Time for anyone with a spine from either camp such as Kucinich, Paul and Feingold to wash their hands of these losers and start a third political party, which will take all of about 2 weeks before it gains traction with mainstream America.

The system is broken and the question is whether or not it can be fixed or is it time for another revolution? Have we come to this point:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."

Maybe the time has come to abolish this government and start again.

Or am I being just too un-American?

What smoke-filled bubble has Ms. Pelosi been living in and what was in that smoke? She undersetimated the GOP after having to deal with their ideological fanatacism for years?

O.K., fine. Ms. Pelosi was suckered into believing Congress is a Tea and Debating Society, and now she realizes that she brought a Q-tip to a knife fight. What is she going to do about it? Is she going to rally the troops to stymie GOP warmongering by bottling them up in committees? Is she going to go on the offensive, go on the air, and tell the american people that the reason Congress gets nothing done is because Republican neocons there have obstructed nearly every single bill, filibustering a record-setting 62 times in the last year alone? Will she reveal the dirty tricks of the other side the way they reveal every misstep of Democrats?

No, She won't.

And neither will any other of the Dems; they have been brutalized for so long by the criminal GOP that they've taken on the behavior of Battered Wife Syndrome: at the first sign of intimidation, they wet themselves in a corner and beg forgiveness from their oppressors, even before they know what to beg forgiveness for.

On top of learned victimhood, I also believe Democrats are possibly being blackmailed, and the more outspoken of them are possibly being threatened with economic, or even physical, harm. I saw a change in attitude on the hill after Tom Daschel received an anthrax-laced letter and then promptly withdrew from politics. I suspect that there are things going on in this administration that are far more malicious and dangerous than any of us out here realize. This is what has been underestimated by Speaker Pelosi and the rest of us, aided by the dumb-president smoke screen covering up the very nefarious manipulators behind the paper mache throne. This is the same mistake that was made by the Weimar Republic, comfortable as it was with its democracy, right up until it was quietly infiltrated by the Nazis, and then overthrown by them in 1933 – and we are making the same mistake.

Blame, blame, blame. The Democrats have been losers all 2007, because they haven't the guts to make Republicans follow through on their incessant threats to filibuster. They tremble when someone sneezes. Oh, goodness gracious, we might make somebody angry if we actually do something! Sadly, the Democratic party is a party of pointless weaklings. And the Democrats really think 2008 will sweep Congress onto their laps. Well, people will vote locally, and Hillary is unelectable.

Shame on you Nancy Pelosi! Are you really more ignorant than the majority of the American people? Who didn't think the Repuglicans would stick to their guns regarding the war? It's all they have! Without the imminent, trumped up threat of impending terrorist doom how can they possibly expect to get their hapless candidate of choice elected?!!!

I'm waiting for the Dems to screw up this election by their passivity and disorganization. I'm no longer a Dem (for the first time ever) but hate the Refucklicans so much that I'd vote for Elmer Fudd if he were not a "conservative."

I think nearly everyone has it wrong. I keep reading that most think this nation is operating under our constitution and we just aren’t organized enough or lack political savvy.
Nonsense: What we are witnessing is political theater. We are a Fascist nation now ruled completely by those who have not one care about most of us. The last two elections were rigged the courts are loaded, the bureaucracies run by corporate stooges and corporate gifts and rewards are what is controlling policy. Nancy with her votes, obfuscation and policy control is clearly part of the Fascist regime. This is true of most members of congress. Those who understand it yet do not want to be part of it keep their mouths shut out of fear or economic self preservation.
The presidential debates are a clear example of how the corporations run the show. They are phony in every way. The way third parties like Ralph Nader have been marginalized and blocked is criminal and more proof of what I say.

I, unfortunately, underestimated Ms. Pelosi's understanding of the will of the voters, the necessity of holding Bush etal accountable and the need to strongly and loudly proclaim our indignation and refusal to bend to the wishes of a failed Bush regime that has resorted to lies, misdirection and strong-arm tactics to serve their own self interest. I am deeply disappointed in the Democratic leadership and now call for them to be replaced by people with the grit and determination to fight for the rights and needs of the United States citizens...all of them, not just the "have mores".

I say: The time has come, for all us progressives, independents and disenfranchised
moderate Republicans (if they haven't become extinct) to band together and form a "Patriots'
New Freedoms Party!"

Free of all corporate and other nefarious interests, this peoples' party will be necessary, so that we take back our democracy
and revitalize our constitutional way of self-governing.

Do not look to, or hope that the Democratic Party will do the job, simply for many, many reasons, they are not up to the task.

Either we the people do this, or we might as well, right now, bend down, and kiss our so called "Free Asses," goodbye!!!!
