Caught on Tape: Military Officials at Bagram Urge U.S. Soldiers to Evangelize in Afghanistan

Posted by Jeremy Scahill, Rebel Reports at 7:50 AM on May 4, 2009.

A new report by Al Jazeera shows U.S. troops being told to "hunt people for Jesus ... so we get them into the kingdom."

New video evidence has surfaced showing that U.S. military forces in Afghanistan have been instructed by the military’s top chaplain in the country to "hunt people for Jesus" as they spread Christianity to the overwhelmingly Muslim population. Soldiers also have imported bibles translated into Pashto and Dari, the two dominant languages of Afghanistan. What’s more, the center of this evangelical operation is at the huge U.S. base at Bagram, one of the main sites used by the U.S. military to torture and indefinitely detain prisoners.
In a video obtained by Al Jazeera and broadcast Monday, Lieutenant-Colonel Gary Hensley, the chief of the U.S. military chaplains in Afghanistan, is seen telling soldiers that as followers of Jesus Christ, they all have a responsibility "to be witnesses for him."
"The special forces guys -- they hunt men basically. We do the same things as Christians, we hunt people for Jesus. We do, we hunt them down," he says.
"Get the hound of heaven after them, so we get them into the kingdom. That’s what we do, that’s our business."
The translated Bibles appear to be the New Testament. According to Al Jazeera, U.S. soldiers "had them specially printed and shipped to Afghanistan." On the tape, one soldier describes how his church in the U.S. helped raise money for the bibles. Al Jazeera reports that "What these soldiers have been doing may well be in direct violation of the U.S. Constitution, their professional codes and the regulations in place for all forces in Afghanistan." The U.S. military officially forbids "proselytising of any religion, faith or practice." But, as Al Jazeera reports:

[T]he chaplains appear to have found a way around the regulation known as General Order Number One.
"Do we know what it means to proselytise?" Captain Emmit Furner, a military chaplain, says to the gathering.
"It is General Order Number One," an unidentified soldier replies.
But Watt says "you can’t proselytise but you can give gifts."

Trying to convert Muslims to any other faith is a crime in Afghanistan. The fact that the video footage is being broadcast on Al Jazeera guarantees that it will be seen throughout the Muslim world. It is likely to add more credence to the perception that the U.S. is engaging in a war on Islam with neo-crusader forces invading Muslim lands.
Former Afghan prime minister Ahmed Shah Ahmedzai told Al Jazeera there must be a "serious investigation," saying, "This is very damaging for diplomatic relations between the two counties." Sayed Aalam Uddin Asser, of the Islamic Front for Peace and Understanding in Kabul, told the network: "It's a national security issue … our constitution says nothing can take place in Afghanistan against Islam. If people come and propaganda other religions which have no followers in Afghanistan [then] it creates problems for the people, for peace, for stability."

A U.S. military spokesperson, Major Jennifer Willis, denied that the U.S. military has allowed its soldiers to attempt to convert Afghans and said comments from sermons filmed at Bagram were taken out of context. She said the bibles were never distributed. "That specific case involved a soldier who brought in a donation of translated bibles that were sent to his personal address by his home church. He showed them to the group and the chaplain explained that he cannot distribute them," she said. "The translated bibles were never distributed as far as we know, because the soldier understood that if he distributed them he would be in violation of general order 1, and he would be subject to punishment."

The video footage was shot about a year ago by documentary filmmaker Brian Hughes, who is also a former U.S. soldier. "[U.S. soldiers] weren't talking about learning how to speak Dari or Pashto, by reading the Bible and using that as the tool for language lessons," Hughes told Al Jazeera. "The only reason they would have these documents there was to distribute them to the Afghan people. And I knew it was wrong, and I knew that filming it … documenting it would be important."

The broadcast of this video comes just days after a new poll of White Americans found that, in the U.S., church going Christians are more likely to support the use of torture than other segments of the population. The Pew Research Center poll found: "White evangelical Protestants were the religious group most likely to say torture is often or sometimes justified -- more than six in 10 supported it. People unaffiliated with any religious organization were least likely to back it. Only four in 10 of them did."
This is certainly not the first scandal where U.S. military forces or officials have been caught on tape promoting an evangelical Christian agenda. Perhaps the most high-profile case involved Lieut. Gen. William Boykin, who was a Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence under Bush. Boykin was part of Donald Rumsfeld’s inner circle at the Pentagon where he was placed in charge of hunting "high-value targets." Boykin was one of the key U.S. officials in establishing what critics alleged was death-squad-type activity in Iraq.

In October 2003, Boykin was revealed to have gone on several anti-Muslim rants, in public speeches, many of which he delivered in military uniform. Since January 2002, Boykin had spoken at twenty-three religious-oriented events, wearing his uniform at all but two. Among Boykin’s statements, he said he knew the U.S. would prevail over a Muslim adversary in Somalia because "I knew that my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real God and his was an idol." Boykin also charged that Islamic radicals want to destroy America "because we're a Christian nation" that "will never abandon Israel." Our "spiritual enemy," Boykin declared, "will only be defeated if we come against them in the name of Jesus."
As for President Bush, Boykin said, "Why is this man in the White House? The majority of Americans did not vote for him. Why is he there? And I tell you this morning that he’s in the White House because God put him there for a time such as this." In another speech, Boykin said other countries "have lost their morals, lost their values. But America is still a Christian nation." He told a church group in Oregon that special operations forces were victorious in Iraq because of their faith in God. "Ladies and gentlemen, I want to impress upon you that the battle that we're in is a spiritual battle," he said. "Satan wants to destroy this nation, he wants to destroy us as a nation, and he wants to destroy us as a Christian army."

Thing is, our guys in Afghanistan on occasion have LITERALLY "hunted" Afghanis, as in, mass-murdered civilians.
On the bright side, I don't fear that many Afghanis will be converted to Christianity, a religion many people of Afghanistan associate with violence and war at least as much as many Americans associate Islam with violence and terrorism.

What I don't get is how anybody who is saddened by "America's decline in values" could support GW Bush, even saying that God put him in office. Didn't the biggest decline in our values in America's history -- preemptive war based on lies, torture, domestic spying, environmental destruction -- occur under Bush's leadership!? President Bush stole our humanity, and rendered America an evil nation. Tell THAT to your God!

Ok after 2 millenia hasn't anyone figured out these Religous Crusades are the 'work of the Devil'.The goal is to not only divide and conquer, but perpetuates the commission of immortal sins.
What part of 'One and Only One' eludes them?Waging wars over 'messiahs' between Monotheologies is nothing more than idol worship. Not that waging wars with polytheoist is any better, or even those who believe in no superior being.
We can all agree on the fact none of us truely fully understands what controls the universe and how, or why, it does so. And at this point we are the only mortal species who has any influence over how we effect it.
Arguing about how it all began is an exercise if irrelevancy. Worrying or proselytizing, about how it may end is an act of irresponsibity and arrogance. Our moment is now to have a postiive effect on the path towards the future. It would be ill fated if we reverted back to methods or ideas which have clearly been proven detrimental.
We moved out of the Dark Ages into the light of intellectual enlightment and exploration, it's time we do so with confines of spirituality and philosophy.
WE would be far better off to request the Koran be distributed so that our service personel have a better understanding of the people they find themselves working with.We may find we have the same concepts, but expressed in different terms. A Chair may be called different words- but it's still a damn chair.Let's move beyond the print, or spoken word and try to find common ground in the basic concepts.

Muslims make up 1/5 of the world population. What kind of message does this send to them? They will see themselves in a war with the "Christian" US! This is insane!

We need to flood Robert Gates and the President with messages DEMANDING THIS STOP and be investigated, and anyone found supporting this kind of behavior needs to be punished.

Do they not understand that proselytizing in Afghanistan could cause a backlash against ALL US personnel there?

These people are SO FUCKING STUPID!

Thank you, Jeremy Scahill, for telling this story!

ARE THESE PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR FREAKING MINDS?

oh wait... that's self-evident, isn't it??

congratulations, you're about to see an upsurge in the Holy War.

GOOD LUCK WITH THE DOMESTIC BLACK MUSLIM POPULATION, the US is going to hear something *very soon* about their disappointment in how their taxes are being used against their religious brethren.

The 'non-White, non-Christian, non-Corporate' xenophobic domestic surveillance aficionados got EXACTLY what they want to help keep peaceful dissent & activism firmly under the thumb of police.

BUH-bye civil rights!

The lack of cross-cultural understanding is incredible. Evangelicals are trained NOT to respect any beliefs other than their own - if you are not like them, you must change (be saved)or die. Today they support Israel, but plan to convert or kill them eventually. Evil hides behind fundamentlism and ignorance. It is no surprise that the greedy and corrupt use these people to shield their activities.

It's gone on for years with Bush's blessing. Xi (formerly Blackwater) is owned (Eric Prince) and operated by the Christian Right, Specific beliefs were required of civilians who were employed in the "Green Zone". The military is well infiltrated with people who are there to spread the word. I Believe that they put us at great risk. It's bad enough to spread Democracy to people who don't want it, but messing with the God of their choice is disastrous. All due respect to the military, they are not on a religious mission. The majority of soldiers are being put in danger because a small percentage are pushing their personal agenda. Sounds very disloyal to me.ANNA

"We're NUMBER ONE!" - proselytizing & evangelizing CULTURE, gov't & religion

is very much all the same thing.
its just is more *evident* when its done to members of another religious group.

When Americans insult, call people they dislike 'UN-American' or generally disparage *anyone* as being less because they don't adhere to whatever it is that Americans believe is a 'universal standard' that their nation emulates
that's propaganda
that's advertising
that's evangelism
that's disrespectful
& it drives the Rest of the World bugfuck nuts.

"The World does not consist of Americans screaming to get out - Bill Maher.

A good person, living in a good culture & society... is insulted when they're told they are 'less' because they don't live as 'Americans'... ...when in actuality, even the term is simply a tautological reference of little or no agreed-upon definition

According to Americans I've met (including Liberals!), I'm not 'free' since I live in a self-determined, sovereign, structured society which I enjoy... because it isn't 'American'. Nor is my culture as good, because it doesn't meet self-proclaimed 'American Standards'... nor are my values... by definition they're not the uniquely identified 'American Dream...
I'm not as smart, I'm not as enlightened & I'm not as good a person... because I'm the un-American' North American citizen... in fact, if I do behave in a good fashion which is approved... I can 'aspire' to American-ness?

um, that's fucked up.

IMAGINE being a muslim in Iraq:
...watching murder, theft, rape & other abuses
...watching 'KKKhristians' tell you that IF YOU'RE LUCKY & do as you're TOLD & believe what you're TOLD by your abuser, that you'll be 'perfected' as a Christian American.
oh goodie!

That's a lot like Ann Coulter saying she wanted Jews to be 'perfected', isn't it?

Now imagine... every OTHER culture & nation on Earth, listening to Americans tell us that IF WE'RE LUCKY & GRATEFUL ENOUGH for the abuses we take... we can become American

I often hear, 'yeah, so why are so many of these wretched non-Americans struggling to become American, huh??'... when their options are limited for access to *anything* other that the poverty in which they live (gee, I wonder why?)... they'll take *anything* else.
IN fact, every nation on Earth has foreign immigration.

It takes a lot of hubris to tell the Rest of the World that your religion or culture or government is better than anyone else's & that's not pretty or even something to which a Good Person in a Good Society should aspire...

& we all know, that abused children tend to cling the most tightly to their abusive parent... because they're terrified that if the one who tells them they care is a bastard... what greater horrors might the strangers do?

imagine:
living in a World where your abuser... has the World's Largest Military & military budget, has no respect for you, your religion or culture... no respect for Rule of Law or Human Rights...
& gets its kicks off telling you how wretched you are & telling you to be grateful for your abuses?

then imagine... trying to find common ground for improvements

The World won't improve, until Americans learn to respect & care about The UN-American

Christians are a particular brand of evil, and American Christians in particular are particularly insidious. They seek to rob others of their heritage and identity and make them slaves to their own god, a god in their own white image. As if the Americans haven't ravaged the suffering Afghan people enough, now they unleash this plague. They will bribe impoverished people and people's vulnerable children into worshipping in their deranged cult. I can only imagine what these savages would do to anyone who would attempt to proselytize to their children. May they be damned. May your entire nation which has given birth to such evil be damned and your culture, identity and heritage stolen as you seek to rob others of theirs.

It is just a shame that Afghan people should even be subjected to the ominous presence of such people, whether they proselytize or not, they are simply poison. Here’s hoping Afghanistan will be free of the gods of foreigners, Arab and most certainly European.

Using two mythical people as a reason to kill. Osama Bin Laden and God. What's next...Kill the brown people or Santa will not love you anymore. Just more proof that organised religion softens your head. If you are dumb enough to let yourself join the USA Military, then you are obviously dumb enough to think that believing in your God is better than their God. You deserve any misfortune that comes your way because of your gullibility.

We need to understand that this is nothing new but has been going on for quite a while, despite efforts to quiet them (the evangelical christers) down a bit. The military had better get its act together on this and kick those fuckers out, pronto.

There is a good analysis on god freaks in the military in this months Harpers by Jeff Sharlet entitled Jesus Killed Mohammed. I will try to get a cite here but am having troubles with my password on my Harpers account...later for sure

Christianity is NOT Why the U.S. Military is in Afghanistan
Posted by: nobyjingo on May 4, 2009 1:48 PM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
U.S. military forces are warriors sent to kill, destroy, occupy and force peace for the protection of the United States, the United States territories and allies.

I am a Christian, and in no way do I deny the Christian faith, but I can't for the life of me see how the military proselytizing to a fearful occupied group of people in a war-torn country can be of benefit to anyone, anymore than torture can be of benefit, as the people will say whatever the occupier wants to hear,as peace, joy, kindness and love is not what U.S. military personnel represent to the occupied,as military occupiers represent war, destruction, tyranny, oppression and fear.

The church that sent these bibles should have come themselves and presented the bibles in peace and love, not used U.S. military warriors as their emissaries, but they didn't, and since Christians, even though warriors, want others to know their faith and be able to accept or reject Jesus, as Christians believe they will be held responsible before God for not telling people they know about Jesus. Therefore, their hearts were in the right place, even though they weren't abiding by military rules, they really meant no evil. Since everything worketh together for good for them who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose, God will find a way to somehow turn their military mistake for good in some way, even though it may not seem like it right now.

This is exactly the way in which christianity spread.First the males were killed in wars then the clergies came to children, orphans, needy and destitute widows with bible in one hand and food in the other and chanting"jesus died for your sins"The result was whole north, central and south America became christian, whole Australia,Newziland and south Africa and Phillipines as well. Now would such an approach make Jesus proud? Is today's christianity anything to do with message of Jesus?
What surprises me that there are not many christians who would speak against such practices. In todays world with education and knowledge, approach needs to change as well and proselytisation should be banned world over let alone on US taxpayers money by uniformed soldiers.Yes, present your faith in pleasant and logical manner.

A chaplain’s job is to minister to the troops in combat. There are chaplains from every faith including Islam. I think there may even be a Wicca chaplain. A number of chaplains have received the CMOH and more have died on the battle field. But that does not make them all smart.- The solder sitting to his left looks like he has serious regrets about being there. My guess is the guy will not make full Colonel.

What braniac came up with this idea - gun-totin' evangelists? I wish we could throw-out the military brass like we've thrown-out the bozos that got us into the current financial mess... oh.

Never understood the born-again/military connection

I spent six years on active duty, including serving in Desert Storm, and we were virtually buried with bibles from boot camp through Iraq to discharge. These were donated by various churches. It was a funny thing because all anyone ever did was get drunk and screw bar girls while overseas, and we did pretty much the same in the states.

Every evening there was a prayer said over the PA system but, as far as I could tell, this was done for the benefit of a tiny handful of religious zealots, or maybe out of tradition. I only knew two guys in those six years who were born again, but I did know quite a few athiests and agnostics.

Anyway, I doubt these nuts will have anymore luck converting Muslims than they did converting American teenagers.

The 'chaplins' in question should be court-marshaled

These so called 'chaplins' in full violation of the US Constitution, Afgan law, and US Military Law. They should be immediately go through court-marshals, face military jail time if and upon conviction or at the least, be dishonarably dismissed. They are endangering our forces in their preverse zelotry of faith.

not the fricking Salvation Army, whose processional hymn is,

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
with the cross of Jesus going on before.
Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
forward into battle see his banners go!

This is just the tip of the iceberg, vis-a-vis the influence of the Dominionists in our government.

The Prophet Mohammad was, according to Islam, the last of the Prophets. According to Islam, Jesus was -- like Mohammad -- also sent to Earth by God. There is a chapter in the Koran about Mary, Jesus's mother. In other words, Jesus is not viewed by Muslims as an evil American "white guy" that only Americans can identify with, but rather as one of God's Prophets -- but not The Messiah.

This is exactly what Ann Coulter recommended years ago. There'll be three kinds of Afghans: the dead, the refugees and the Christians. Onward Christian Soldiers!

Pure Evil

Christians themselves would probably tell you that the 'Devil' they so fear spends most of his time hanging out in churches.

A sure fire way to take any power out of Christ's message is to tell invading soldiers to evangelize at the point of a gun. It smacks of the Spanish Conquistadors. It adds insult to injury and is, if possible, more evil than simply shooting at them.

I wonder if any of these people can actually look themselves in the mirror with a straight face and believe they're doing right, or that their Christ will bless them for it. It is this which makes me ate the church altogether. I once loved the message of Christ, but these people have made it a foul wretched thing.

I read this article twice, after which I had to pick my jaw up from the floor (it had missed the desk top completely, on the way down), subdue my feelings of rage, indignation and horror, and remind myself I was indeed living in 2009 and not in the midst of the Crusades, lopping off the heads of infidels, in search of the Holy Grail. Jeebus Asparagus! Can this be real? Is this even remotely possible I an “enlightened” age? I kept hoping that Lt. Col. Hensely was a fictional character.

As is my nature, I sent the story out and about, among my circle of friends, detractors, and critics, and my email screen lit up like (pardon the expression) a friggin Christmas tree. An infuriated Buddhist reminded me that the Dali Lama has said that “Buddhism is not for everyone”, the implication being that cramming your religion down another’s throat does not work. Even worse, using religion at cross purposes with itself is both counter-intuitive and heretical (In this case, it amounts to, “Excuse me. But I want to kill you in the name of my lord and savior”).
A Coptic Christian Arab fired back that he would tell these antagonists “Get this stuff out of my lands”.
A non-Christian, non-Jew, non-Arab “plain white American” added that he would not want this “stuff” in his lands either. All were shocked, offended and as mortified by the gall and moral turpitude as I was.

Clearly we have a chain of idiots responsible for this bonfire: the first is the one who thought this perversion up( lit the match), in the first place. The second is the officer who approved it(put wood on the fire). The third is the procurement officer (or officers) who authorized the materials preparation(poured on the gasoline), and the fourth is the person who outlined and presented the procedural guidelines(fanned the flames). The chaplains involved (“This is general order #1”?) and who attempted to disguise the proselytizing as “gift giving”, should be summarily dismissed, disenfranchised, disgraced and de-frocked. These b oys have got their Bible-learnin’ all wrong.
The nearly unthinkable and wholly inconceivable notion that a set of widely-held religious beliefs, the accompanying morals and the humanitarian foundations that accompany them, might be wrapped around the military goals of murder, death and destruction, like a putrefied pork rind, is disgusting. I do not know what else to call it. Using the misinterpreted tenets of any form of theism as a guise for hideous behavior is simply anti-theistic.
Evangelical Christians should be stunned at the audacity of it all.
Christians of any ilk should be shamed and embarrassed.
Christian leaders, east and west, religious thinkers and theological luminaries should be roiling with anger and resentment.
Any Muslim believer or practitioner should be enraged, affronted and infuriated (is it any wonder that so many are willing to take up arms or strap on a bomb?).
John the Baptist, beheaded as he was, should be acting now as the [headless] horseman of the apocolypse, railing against such despicable goings-on (we could use his waterboarding skills, now).
Even practitioners of the dreaded protestant “Jesusology” should be horrified in the manner in which their core beliefs have been maligned, misused and misrepresented.
And any Jew who smirks at this should be reprimanded and labeled as a fraud.
Indeed, the core of any serious belief in the humanity of man should be seen as marginalized and contorted beyond recognition by this action. It is heretical, profane and blasphemous.
This is a brain-dead and bone-headed activity which should be ceased immediately. It makes us barbarians at the gate.
If you claim to be Christian, you might ask yourself, now, “What would Jesus do?” Well, he sure as hell would not do THIS.

I saw this video, and I also read a news story from the Pentagon denying it. Those soldiers were not advocating going out to convert nativa Afghans to Christianity, they said. Of course, why were there all those bibles in Pashtun and Urdu? Maybe they also gave out copies of the Koran?

Or else maybe they want to get all the Afghans to join the Taliban or Al Qaida so they can have fun hunting. I also remember reading some posts on Press-TV Iran from people who think that the Taliban and Al Qaida were created by the CIA and Israel as part of a plot to control the Middle East and its oil. So maybe this is part of the plot?

...the battle cry "Support the Troops."

I for one still do not understand the supporting of people who signed up to destroy another country that did not provoke an attack.

To thank them for their service is an oxymornic slogan. The "troops" do no more good or bad for this country than any other member of this society. I thank my garbage man, mail woman, etc. when they do a GOOD job.

The demagogues portrayed here are no better than the popes during the crusades.

This is what you get when you "Support the Troops" unconditionally.

In fact a better slogan may be "Oppose the Troops!" Especially the troops engaged in the fictitious "War on Terror."

Being as we are a Christian nation, our first thought SHOULD be to save these people from the lies they have been taught from birth.

They are intelligent and the freedom that we wish for them would afford them the opportunity to make their OWN decisions.

All political differences would seem petty once they had Christ.
