In February, only three Republican senators broke party ranks to vote for the economic recovery package. Zero House Republicans voted for passage. Part of their opposition centered around the belief that an increase in government spending would do nothing to create jobs:

– “And first off the government doesn’t create jobs. Let’s get this notion out of our heads that the government creates jobs. Not in the history of mankind has the government ever created a job. Small business owners do, small enterprises do. Not the government.” [RNC Chairman Michael Steele, 2/2/09]

– “Instead of focusing on three major issues — job creation, housing and compassion for Americans who have lost jobs through no fault of their own — to boost the economy, this bill has morphed into a bloated government giveaway.” [Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), 2/10/09]

– “When it comes to slow-moving government spending programs, it’s clear that it doesn’t create the jobs or preserve the jobs that need to happen.” [House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH), 1/21/09]

However, when Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced plans to end production of the F-22 at the current 187 planes — down from the 381 planes the government was expected to order — many of these same conservatives were up in arms over the jobs that would be lost.

Chambliss, in particular, said that he was concerned people in his state would lose jobs if F-22 production was cut, because “when it comes to stimulating the economy, there’s no better way to do it than to spend it in the defense community.” Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA), who also voted against the economic recovery package, similarly said, “I also believe that it is unacceptable that this administration wants to eliminate 2,000 jobs in Marietta and potentially 95,000 jobs nationwide at a time when unemployment rates are rising across the country.”

Today on ABC’s This week, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman called out this hypocrisy:

KRUGMAN: What’s so wonderful is watching Republican congressmen saying, “But this will cost jobs!” The very same Republican congressmen who were denouncing the stimulus, saying government spending never creates jobs, but cutting defense spending costs jobs. It’s wonderful.

Military correspondent David Axe has pointed out that it’s possible very few workers will lose their jobs because of Gates’s announcement. In fact, thousands of workers will likely be “snapped up for active production lines churning out F-16s, F-35s, C-130s and modernized C-5s for Lockheed, not to mention the prospect that industry rivals Boeing and Northrop might lure Lockheed workers for their own active production lines for the F-15, F/A-18 and others.”

Digg!

The GOP and the Dem are both hypocrites but the greatest is Krugman himself

It is hypocritical to be against job losses in the defense sector but not in the car industry.

Detroit/UAW and the Military Industrial Complex are so inherently corrupt, un-viable, they should have been busted a long time ago.

However there are no scientific evidence that massive government spending will shorten the recession. In fact evidence shows the opposite, the massive government spending of Roosevelt and the Japanese government in the 90s prolonged the pain more than 10 years.

So what has Krugman to say of the Japanese stimulus in the 90s, you guessed it right. If politicians and bureaucrats programs fail what is the answer, more funds. Krugman says the Japanese did not spend enough. Sic!

It is the same old, same old. The US school system has failed even though never before has more money been spent. What is the answer from the left, more money!

The Great Society programs of LBJ has failed, we are spending more money on welfare programs than ever with less results. What is the lefts answer, more money!

When will the likes of Krugman, Kennedy understand that money gets you nowhere if you cannot change the underlying individual behavior? More money only reinforces substandard behavior, the more money that is spent the less the individual has to change.

Bravo Mr. Krugman for calling out the hypocrites! I am ticked at both Democrats and Republicans that bought into the "laissez-faire" ideology, as they were slashing and burning the very rules and regulations that were set up just so that another failure would not happen! Republicans (now the minority) are crowing loudly about "government spending" not "creating jobs" except if a defense contract is involved! What they really are displaying is their ignorance of basic economics. If the government is providing money to the cash strapped states to allow them to spend on the necessities (roads, school improvement, police, fire, etc), then is that not allowing more people to (a)remain in their jobs, (b)get hired, (c)keep money flowing through the system (rent/mortgage, utilities, etc.)!

There appears to be a general disconnect (probably Bi-polar) between what Republicans say they want, and their actions in Congress! The talk about the "small" business is convenient when they are whining about who is getting hurt, but their legislation over the last 12 years has been to enable the BIG LOSERS to run rampant through our economy in the name of FALSE PROFIT!

Have they learned their lesson, have we all learned from this fiasco? Do the naysayers have any alternative plans, or are they continuing to bray about "tax cuts"? In all of the years that they have been cutting taxes, trust me, I have not noticed my taxes diminished one thin dime, in point of fact my taxes have gone up! While I thought that the trickle down theory went the way of the doo-doo bird, it is obvious that these people both Republican and their Democratic allies still haven't figured it out!

This is yet another reason why this country needs to have public financing of elections to take the money out of politics, and force the politicians to work "for the people"!
