Top Neocon Max Boot: Obama 'Continuing and Expanding' Bush's Foreign Policy

Posted by Jeremy Scahill, AlterNet at 7:50 AM on March 30, 2009.

In his latest love letter to Obama, Boot calls his Afghanistan plan "all that supporters of the war effort could have asked for."

This post originally appeared in PEEK.

I feel like this story can be written pretty much any time President Obama makes any major foreign policy announcement. It happened shortly after the election when Obama unveiled his foreign policy team and the neocons and other Republicans sang his praises. It happened with his Iraq plan, when some of his most vocal fans were the likes of John McCain and Mitch McConnell. Now, Obama’s Afghanistan surge is the subject of a love letter from neocon heavy-hitter and former McCain adviser Max Boot. Writing for Commentary, Boot said Obama’s Afghanistan approach “was pretty much all that supporters of the war effort could have asked for, and probably pretty similar to what a President McCain would have decided on.”
Boot wrote:

It would be nice if Obama had spoken a bit more positively about the outcome in Iraq now that that it has become, like Afghanistan, “his” war.
But that’s a minor quibble about rhetoric. The substance of policy is more important, and on that ground Obama is solid.
The big news -- though it had been apparent for some time -- is that Obama is eschewing those who argue for a major downsizing of our efforts to focus on a narrow counter-terrorism strategy of simply picking off individual bad guys. Instead, Obama is embracing a more wide-ranging counterinsurgency strategy focused on enhancing “the military, governance, and economic capacity of Afghanistan and Pakistan.”

To cap it all off, Boot said Obama is “essentially continuing and expanding [Bush’s foreign] policy.”

In another recent post about Obama’s dropping of the term “Global War on Terror,” Boot wrote, “the Obama administration’s change of nomenclature for the Global War on Terrorism is less important than its willingness to continue most of the actions the Bush administration took to fight the terrorists.”

As I have said before, it really seems like the most substantive foreign policy changes we are seeing under Obama, unfortunately, are the words he uses to define his belligerent, Bush-esque policies.

Digg!

Of Course Boot Loves Barack

The capitalist economy produces a ruling class, a handful of men who wield dictatorial power and are accorded material privilege beyond all reason. Karl Marx called them the bourgeoisie. Capitalism demands unity among this small group based solely on an absolute allegiance to profits. That unity will not be undermined by nationalism, or racism, or anything as silly as sentiment or mysticism or party affiliation. Patriotism and religious belief are for chumps who fight and die in their wars for profit.

Former President George W. Bush was a prop of the bourgeoisie and Barack Obama has now assumed that same role. When Obama met with the bankers the other day he was meeting with his bosses.

Came across this movie made in 1969 - one of the first Truth documentaries, no doubt. It's Dynamite!

So, is Barak assisting bankers control the money? Yup.
Has he returned our civil liberties - habeas corpus and posse comitatus? Nope.
I always thought he was a good ol' Chicago School Guy. Hey, Milt Friedman is seen in this movie, too. Wouldn't be a "Bankers taking over the world" movie without him!

With Max Boot firmly on Obama's side along with all that other glittering array of Republicans and Neocons, where do the rest of us stand now?

thinks that the nice noises coming from the likes of Max Boot and the rest of his ilk constitutes propaganda? Applause for the Bush policy that wasn't there?

Oh, never! Impugn the motives and the dedication to honest journalism that abides in the Party of the Walking Dead? HOW could I even TRY to say such a thing??

Well, here's how: It doesn't look like Bush, smell like Bush, or play like Bush.

It utilizes aid and support to Iraq and Afghanistan, with possible co-opting of Iran, and cooperation with them, not in a counter-insurgency (Iraq a la Bush) but in counter-terrorism initiatives against the hold and mystique of the Taliban and al Qaeda themselves. We wil not simply prop up existing leaders, but will have strict standards that military attachments to terrorist groups will end. We will utilize political leaders, civilians and other groups in a position to operate against terrorists, only if they meet our conditions.

The plan provides more troops, 4,000 of which will train Afghan soldiers and the national police; the plan is to have more than 130,000 soldiers and 82,000 police officers trained by 2011. If there is to be a counter-insurgency, these are the troops who will conduct it--not American or Nato troops. The balance of our troops will be given expanded counter-terrorism assignments and charged with defeating Al Qaeda, not just killing selected individuals in isolation.

Does that sound like fucking Bush to anybody here??

Those Republican smear-mongers only WISH Bush had led a coordinated, internationally cooperative mission like Barack's. If he had, he wouldn't be in total disgrace right now, and the jagwits who led him, followed him, praised him and bought him wouldn't be in the hole with him.

I must say, they still have some life in them, those fucking dead men walking. They know that if they say something is great, everyone else will think it's shit, and that's what all this fancy praise is about.

Barry voted to fund the Iraq war some more and made his intentions on bombing Afghanistan and Pakistan clear when he campaigned for president. Just like Dubya in 2000 and 2004, the electorate chose "personality" and no good substance crap brains for leadership over better candidates. Well, that's what you people get. Those of us who voted outside of McSame and Barry tried to spare you of the neocon expansions but you chose to PERSECUTE us and gleefully vote against your own economic and foreign policy interests yet again. Face it, a vote for Barry was and still is a vote for Dubya. When you people actually learn to pay attention to the candidates on the issues, then we'll defeat the neocons. Until then, the neocons win and we the people LOSE.

Afghanistan is about Big Oil Pipelines (& Heroine) Iraq is about Big Oil

The justifications for Obama's high-sounding rhetoric regarding "war on terror" are for the most part absurd. "Al-Qaeda" was never in Iraq and was virtually created by the CIA-ISI by way of "Operation Cyclone" originally headed by Zbigniew Brzezinski that was later funded the the U.S. and the Saudis. Osama Bin Laden was never charged with 9/11 (which is still a coverup) and he denied any involvement in 9/11 itself. That's before he died as Benazir Bhutto and Musharraf both declared Bin Laden dead years ago.

International wars are always fought over money. Trillions of dollars in Big Oil pipelines and heroine black ops profits represent means, motive and opportunity. This "war on terror" is so obviously a snow job (literally a war on a noun) it could hardly be more preposterous with bells on.

Liberal senator gets elected, has to make decisions that affect Wall Street, the nation, and the world.

Liberal senator suddenly sees things differently.

Thank you, senator, for validating conservatives' worldview.

Didn't you see the look on his face when him and the mrs. came out from 'Tea' with the Bush's. Big Daddy and Little Georgie were both there to let Big O in on the scam. he can't change shit or he becomes the next Bonesmen trophy.

Obama has never said he was a Peacemaker. he's surrounded himself with some of the biggest 'Hawks' in Government. Why? He needs an 'A-Team' of war nuts to keep the ball rolling.' We've almost got all the World, let's keep going', that's their motto.

If we want the two party system, that's really the One Party System, to quit being such a war mongering, anti personal freedom and liberty fuck over, then we have only one choice...ABOLISH IT

Arch-neocon Max Boot ceaselessly lobbies for the continuing squandering of hundreds upon hundreds of billions of US taxpayer dollars, on endless war in the Middle East to "protect" Israel (meaning protect the insane project for a "Greater Israel" built on the backs of a permanently suppressed and oppressed Palestinian population.
