Bulldog Dick: Cheney Is Already Attacking Obama

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 7:33 AM on February 4, 2009.

As to the type of attacks ... let's just say the former V.P. is not "truth-oriented."

Former Vice President Dick Cheney was a national disgrace and an embarrassment to himself while in office, but he's not quite done engaging in some of the cheapest, most offensive, least honest demagoguery imaginable.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney warned that there is a "high probability" that terrorists will attempt a catastrophic nuclear or biological attack in coming years, and said he fears the Obama administration's policies will make it more likely the attempt will succeed.

In an interview Tuesday with Politico, Cheney unyieldingly defended the Bush administration's support for the Guantanamo Bay prison and coercive interrogation of terrorism suspects.

And he asserted that President Obama will either backtrack on his stated intentions to end those policies or put the county at risk in ways more severe than most Americans -- and, he charged, many members of Obama's own team -- understand.

"When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry," Cheney said.

Protecting the country's security is "a tough, mean, dirty, nasty business," he said. "These are evil people. And we're not going to win this fight by turning the other cheek."

Specifically on the issue of Guantanamo Bay, Cheney said that "about 11 or 12 percent" of the detainees released in recent years have "gone back into the business of being terrorists." He added that the remaining inmates are "the hard core."

Previous national leaders, once they leave office, usually maintain some sense of decorum, refraining from attacking their successors. Cheney waited just two weeks before accusing the Obama administration of coddling terrorists and putting American lives at risk. Classy.

Fact-checking a Cheney interview is daunting -- let's just say the former V.P. is not "truth-oriented" -- but let's quickly take note of some of these obvious whoppers.

We know, for example, that Cheney's comments about the detainee recidivism rate are wrong. (On a related note, Cheney, oddly enough, was blaming his own administration for releasing dangerous detainees.) His comments about the remaining inmates are also demonstrably false. Cheney said his torture policies prevented massive terrorist attacks, and that's literally unbelievable, too.

But dishonesty aside, there's one thing I'd love to hear Cheney explain. Since he and Bush left office, and Barack Obama started governing, al Qaeda seems to be in a bit of a panic. A former CIA counterterrorism official recently said, "For al-Qaeda, as a matter of image and tone, George W. Bush had been a near-perfect foil." Rita Katz, head of a private company that monitors jihadist communications, said the terrorists' hysterical rants against the new president show "just how much al-Qaeda is intimidated by Obama."

If Cheney's get-tough policies were so valuable, why was al Qaeda thrilled to have Bush around, and desperate now that Obama has been elected?

Post Script: Cheney also said, "The United States needs to be not so much loved as it needs to be respected." Yes, because if there's one word that describes international attitudes towards the United States in the Bush era, it's "respected." Riiiiiiight.

Digg!

I'm sure that being held and tortured in Guantanamo has provided more than a little incentive for former detainees to rebel against America.

This man is a war criminal!

While we could go forward with prosecuting the Bush cabal, I heard a suggestion on another board that I liked alot. President Obama needs to come out and officially pardon Bush and Cheney for their war crimes. This would have the effect of allowing us to go forward from here and, at the same time, acknowledging that war crimes have been committed under the Bush regime.

He's got a lot of nerve criticizing anything this new administration is doing to try to clean up the huge fucking mess he and Bush left this country in! What balls!

While reading the linked article in Politico, I found this little tidbit interesting and surprising:

"...His office is in a non-descript suburban office building in McLean, Va., in a suite that could just as easily house a dental clinic. The office is across the hall from a quick-copy store. The door is marked by nothing except a paper sign, held up by tape, saying the unit is occupied by the General Services Administration."

A paper sign held up by tape. Sounds like he's got the kind of office he so well deserves.

He's done quite enough to fuck up this country. Why Politico is even interviewing him is beyond me. The only people that should be asking him questions is a grand jury!

this report state the amount of terrorists attacks commited globally for a twelve month period? Did terrorist attacks increase or decrease during the eight years of the Bush Administration?

The Era of Fearmongering is over. The Era of Personal Responsibility has arrived. No man in this "land of the free" is above the law of the land. Those who attributed themselves with the idea of being above the law must be brought under the law to make certain that the
law must be respected. No exception!

You know... it's possible this jackass knows something.

Perhaps he should be detained for questioning... maybe waterboarded... to see just how much he knows about when that terrorist attack is planned, and just where it will occur.

He was permitted to have access to a lot of sensitive information... our defenses could very easily be compromised. I suggest bringing him in, immediately.

This can be one of those exceptions that the American public can be asked to overlook. I won't mind.

Cheney should answer a few questions about 9-11 before anything else !

IT IS NOT AS IF OFFICIALS HAVEN'T RAISED A FLAG EITHER...

The co-chairs of the 9/11 Commission (Thomas Keane and Lee Hamilton) said that the CIA (and likely the White House) "obstructed our investigation".

The co-chairs of the 9/11 Commission also said that the 9/11 Commissioners knew that military officials misrepresented the facts to the Commission, and the Commission considered recommending criminal charges for such false statements, yet didn't bother to tell the American people.

Indeed, the co-chairs of the Commission now admit that the Commission largely operated based upon political considerations.

Commission report was only "the first draft" of history.
9/11 Commissioner Bob Kerrey said that "There are ample reasons to suspect that there may be some alternative to what we outlined in our version . . . We didn't have access . . . .

9/11 Commissioner Timothy Roemer said "We were extremely frustrated with the false statements we were getting"

Former 9/11 Commissioner Max Cleland resigned from the Commission, stating: "It is a national scandal"; "This investigation is now compromised"; and "One of these days we will have to get the full story because the 9-11 issue is so important to America. But this White House wants to cover it up".

9/11 Commissioner John Lehman said that “We purposely put together a staff that had – in a way - conflicts of interest".

The Senior Counsel to the 9/11 Commission (John Farmer) who led the 9/11 staff's inquiry, said "I was shocked at how different the truth was from the way it was described .... The tapes told a radically different story from what had been told to us and the public for two years.... This is not spin. This is not true." ....

SO WE OBVIOUSLY STILL DON'T KNOW !
SHOULD WE ?
I HOPE SO...

I love a good caper ;)

....has a few things to say about Cheney (indirectly and editorially) through his lectures about the "New American Fascists".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-fbcy1tRoA

There is a real danger that the Right can and will return to power, because the economic situation is too dire---I am reminded of Weimar Germany again, between the wars, this time with Peak Oil, Population Overshoot, and Climate Change staring us in the face. Cheney's derogatory comment about the supposed ineffectiveness of "turning the other cheek" is a true indicator of their intentions, and of his elitist exterminism.

Hedges remarks in one lecture about being tolerant of the intolerant....those who would use guns and their fists FIRST to advance their agenda at the expense of the rest of us....a pretty good description of how any authoritarian system, and especially Capitalism, has operated since the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215.

He also says those who act in this way should be neutralized, I'm assuming by throwing them in the slammer. We need less of their blood-cult "God" and Elitist Capitalist Exterminism. Survival of the strongest most emphatically does NOT mean survival of the smartest.

Cheney, the old, snarling windbag, knows only about self-serving evil, double talk, and ill-begotten wealth.

The trouble America, and the world is in today can be laid at his doorstep. What he knows and cares nothing about is the American people, our national security, common human decency, and the future of our planet.

The angels will sing when that despicable excuse for a human being takes his one-way trip to the devil, and stays in Hell where he belongs.

Cheney needs to be committed to a mental hospital till he is found guilty and sent to jail at Gitmo where he loves to vacation!

This son-of-a-bitch Cheney is no longer Vice President, so why in hell should anybody listen to him? Oh, yeah, I forgot; he says what the corporate ownership of media outlets want him to say, so they'll attempt to ram him down our throats even after he has lost all relevance.

Here's to hoping that the international courts do what our new administration is reluctant to do and put this devil-incarnate where he belongs.

Gee, I wonder if the media can get an interview from a prison cell in The Hague?

If you USA plan to continue to pose as a democracy, don't you think allowing a sociopathic war criminal who is at large, like Cheney, spread hate as if he was still in power, looks so AWFULLY ODD??? When are you USans read the brilliant book by brilliant attorney Vincent Bugliosi laying out "The Prosecution of George W. Bush [and Richard Cheney] for Murder"??? I bet Cheney has read it, and laughed all the way through it.
A true democracy would establish a TRULY valuable and COURAGEOUS PRECEDENT in prosecuting and sentencing to lifeterms, at least Cheney, Bush and Rumsfeld --you could keep some small cells open at Gitmo for that.

The "double D's" Dubya and Dick are gone from power. Why is anyone listening to them, or even allowing them to comment. They have screwed up our nation to the point that even fellow Americans dislike us, let alone the rest of the world. It will take years to dig our country out of the shit hole these greedy bastards put us in.
To recite the damages this duo have caused would take more than this message.
Just a few- denying global warming, not insisting on less fuel-burning autos, starting wars based on lies and deception causing the deaths of over 4000 young Americans, and thousands of innocent civilians in other countries, de-regulating the financial markets and not enforcing the few remaining restraints on greed that have brought us to this avoidable recession. How is that for starters? I think the idea of President Obama "pardoning" these swindlers and thieves, after publishing what they are being pardoned for, is a good idea. Other wise they will just slink into the night, unless Dick keeps spouting shit from his mouth.

is that they allowed 911 to happen.

Dick Cheney sat in his command center with his FBI and Secret Services THUGS and watched the planes fly into the WTC. Cheney watched FROM the begining when the planes altered course toward the different targets without doing a single thing or issuein a single warning to anyone.

911 just happened to be the day that Dick Cheney decided to conduct his war exercises which just happened to be a scenario where terrorists flew planes into building in the U.S.

DICK CHENEY WATCHED FROM HIS HIDEOUT AS PLANES STRUCK IN THE UNITED STATES. CHENEY AND BUSH ALLOWED 911 TO HAPPEN. I will never believe that Dick Cheney was not involved in 911.

I don't think anyone wants to hear any advice from the man who prodded and pushed Bush into war so that Hallibutton could get into Iraq and rob the government blind. Cheney acted as if he was president. He certainly had more influence that any other VP before him.
