When you're talking about the rights of workers and the urgent need to help them unionize, there's no better person to talk to than SEIU President Andy Stern.  On yesterday's Meet the Bloggers, Stern was our special guest to discuss the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), a vital piece of legislation that, if passed, will go a long way toward restoring the middle class in our country.  EFCA would enable workers to unionize, allowing them to demand fairer wages and much needed benefits like health insurance.

EFCA would bring balance to the work place.  As Michael Whitney of American Rights at Work indicated during the show, this bill would effectively reduce the colossal disparity between Fortune 500 CEOs making an average of $6,153 an hour and the majority of workers earning an hourly federal minimum wage of $6.55.  What's more, EFCA would give workers a voice when it comes to negotiating jobs and contracts, which, as JackandJillPolitics.com blogger Baratunde Thurston pointed out, is especially important for minority workers.  And with mega employers like Wal-Mart resorting to unionbusting tactics and electioneering in order to prevent their employees from supporting pro-union candidates, the time to support EFCA is critical.

That's why we dedicated our entire show to this issue, and that's why we partnered with American Rights at Work to create a new video called Your New Job, as well as a petition to help EFCA pass.  Get this video and the petition to everyone you know who cares about fairness and wants to help restore the middle class in America.  And get it to them now!

Meet the Bloggers airs live every Friday at 1pm ET/10 am PT.  And if you missed any previous shows, you can always catch them here.

The Unions and Teddy Kennedy

Both have history's which can make you cringe, even bitch - but they are always there in the pinch and working to try to make things a bit better for the 'working Stiffs'
Being a Michigander- Unions are in our blood-For better or for worse. The Big 3 did NOT build Michigan- Michigan built the Big 3!Both Grandfathers worked for GM/Ford- before Unions. And for everything those workers gave, The Big 3 ultimatley leaves this State like a dead hooker on 8 & Woodward.Real Sweethearts, We have 'World Headquarters' Yippeee! I live outside th ghost town called Flint, The one GM left for dead.
so regardless of the graft which has also been part of Unions- They still can't screw Us Like the Corps. The Big 3 not only devastated Michigan, of course, they screwed an entire region and stifled many aspects of industry around the country.
Yet had they heeded the call to seek alternatives AFTER the First Oil Crisis- actually took on th electric car when it was presented to them in the '80's perhaps we would be the ones supplying the World with cars Actually 'American Made' Top to bottom!
But NO They had to pretend to give a shit for several years, but came back with the Quintessential Gas Guzzler, the SUV.Trying to
make it up to their Oil Buddy's for the pandering to the public needs? More likely it was a result of dropping Profits because the Japanese were Kicking the Big 3 's asses by the mid '80's-Nothing as civic minded as addressing consumers demands.
so Just like Teddy, Ya hate having to say 'Yeah I remember that story',but You always have a come back as to what they've done right and ultimately for you and/or others. Although Unions and Teddy have some Unsavory biographies, They both always have your back when you need it most.
But Union Members have to remember, and practice, is that just like out economy, Unions are built from the ground Up- The Rank & file is what makes a Union Effective and Strong- or Weak and Worthless.

The SEIU is a Trojan Horse

Stern is running the SEIU like a tyrant, lending credence to the criticisms of his detractors. Stern's dealing with loathsome piles of steaming excrement like Wal-Mart shows that, when push comes to shove, he's a paper tiger.

I contacted his organizers over 2 years ago and have yet to get any response. If they won't even respond to an offer of help on the ground in the union hostile south, what good are they..

Finally, ask the California Nurses about what kind of sell out SEIU is.
