The corporate press has been in bed with John McCain for years.  What's more, whenever the GOP smells the slightest whiff of objectivity from the media, they immediately cry foul.  That was the discussion of this week's Meet the Bloggers, in which punk rock icon, actor, and spoken word artist Henry Rollins filled in admirably for Cenk Uygur, who was at the Republican National Convention.  Rollins led a charged, insightful conversation with bloggers Jonathan Kim (FOX Attacks!), Liliana Segura (AlterNet.org) and Paul Waldman (Media Matters) about the ridiculous bias we've seen from FOX News and the mainstream media throughout this election.

Waldman, who co-authored Free Ride: John McCain and the Media with David Brock, talked about all the ways in which the McCain campaign and the GOP have manipulated the media.  If you need any proof, just watch the heated exchange between CNN's Campbell Brown and McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds featured in this segment.  As Rollins and Waldman pointed out, Bounds jumped down Brown's throat when she asked him to name one instance of real foreign policy experience from McCain's VP pick Sarah Palin.  Once Bounds exhausted his talking points, he went on the defensive, accusing Brown of belittling Palin.  But as Waldman concluded, Brown was simply doing her job, something not enough journalists are doing these days.

Of course, the worst perpetrators of media bias are the folks at FOX News.  What sparked the idea for yesterday's show was Brave New Films' latest video, FOX Attacks Obama Just Like Kerry, which documents all the ways in which FOX has been reusing the same smears and distortions of John Kerry from 2004 to malign Barack Obama.  Jonathan Kim, who runs our FOX Attacks! blog and created this latest video, talked with Rollins about the "FOX effect."

According to Kim, FOX specializes in balancing the truth with lies, giving equal time, let's say, to a real scientist who tells the truth about global warming as they do to a quack without any real expertise who calls global warming a myth.  This is FOX's notion of "fair and balanced," but in reality it's quite dangerous because FOX marginalizes the expert's claim while legitimizing the quack's opinion.

Make no mistake, FOX is willing to do whatever it takes to advance their conservative agenda.  They will lie, smear, and distort to their hearts' content.  They'll even contradict themselves, as The Daily Show illustrated this week when they ran clips of Bill O'Reilly, Karl Rove, Sean Hannity, and Dick Morris going against their own previous statements just so they could gush over Palin.

But what's even more dangerous is for the rest of the corporate press to take their cues from FOX.  That's why Meet the Bloggers dedicated this entire show to this issue, and why we must continue to hold the media accountable for their refusal to cover this election objectively.

Meet the Bloggers airs live every Friday at 1pm ET/10 am PT.  And if you missed any previous shows, you can always catch them here.

Make Henry Rollins a prime time anchor. I would love to see him interview and skewer politicians.

I watched the Campbell Brown bit live. I was amazed that this Tucker person could not answer a simple question. If this is how the entire McCain campaign is going to act whenever they are asked a question, they deserve to lose big time, which they will do anyway. I liked the surrounding commentary. Thanks for postin it.

He was a P.O.W. for God's sake!! The Liberal Media was obviously trying to...ask him a question. That's no way to treat an American hero.

This is the guy whose finger Republicans want to put on the red button. Suppose Putin dares to ask NcCain a question...say hello to WWIII!

...has to hate the Palin pick more than anyone else on the planet. He is really going to be working as hard as anyone to earn his paycheck over these next two months. It almost makes me want to feel sorry for the lying bastard.

McCain's status as P.O.W. = STAR TREK CLOAKING DEVICE

GOOD MORNING CITIZENS! Alternet noted that John McCain's acceptance speech had over 40 sentences devoted to his one-time status as a POW while just 8 sentences touched on his 25 years of experience in the House and Senate. While that sentence can't begin to fairly encapsulate any speech, it does provide confirmation that the Senator's experiences as a POW were "among" the major thrusts of "the biggest speech of his life."

All candidates for high office have distinct, easy-to-digest selling points and marketing thrusts just like Kraft Macaroni & Cheese and Turtle Wax (this fact of modern American life certainly includes Senator Obama). Clearly, THE McCain staff is all-too-happy to wrap the Senator in a POW bow, despite the harrowing memories it must produce in their candidate (who, one would think, suffers from some degree of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, even after 35+ years).

Why rehash that horrible period in his life? Why expose him to such daily reminders of his cruel imprisonment? Simple; it works on so many levels. Their job is to make him President, not worry about his emotional health.

One extraordinary bonus to this positioning is the very real fact that the media (and opposing candidates) view him cloaked in this patriotic shield and are extremely hesitant to attack him too aggressively on nearly every topic for fear that they will appear to be harassing or backstabbing an American War Hero who still shows the disabling wounds of his sometimes brutal interment.

Imagine in today's love it or leave it environment ... backstabbing a War Hero when he endured pain protecting your whiny little ass so you could attend college, raise a family, hide out in Canada or duck service so you could "party hearty" on Dad's allowance???

Is there a more efficient way to demonstrate your lack of gratitude for what he once gave to his country? Is there a quicker way to show how far removed you are from the reality of the battlefield? You are the ultimate noodle-spined political wonk and weiner ... another brie-eating, gun-avoiding elitist from the big city, huh???

Even typing this, I'm being extra careful to NOT be ungracious or unfeeling (or acknowledging of his sacrifice) in such a public forum. If I were speaking this aloud in front of cameras going nationwide, you can bet your ass that I'd be likely to water it down even further. Now, imagine if I were supporting my family as a paid reporter for one of the FIVE major media companies who control the news stream? It would all be predictable and bland (particularly if my big media boss had a scheduled golf date with "President McCain" after the election!)

I do, however, consider myself to be a patriot. I love my country very much and I do actually remember to offer up a private thank you for having even been born here. This still IS the land of opportunity - just ask Sarah Palin - but I recognize it less and less and it hurts me deeply.

I am a registered Democrat, however, the blame for my sense of disappointment is spread among many entities - and not just the political party that's been in charge the last eight years (although I did find it ironic and insulting to the country's intelligence to watch the Republicans vehemently call for "CHANGE" at their convention last week. I couldn't help myself from thinking ... "A CHANGE FROM WHAT???" ..... REPUBLICANISM???"

Still, there is nowhere that I would rather live. Because of that (and because I have three children who deserve the same level of pride in their country that I grew up with), I am feeling extra protective of the American Dream (with all of the lump-in-the-throat Michael Bay cinematic imagery and schmaltz intact) and extra protective of the American Legacy, which I believe is in FREE-FALL.

PLEASE SEE PART 2 BELOW - Thanks!!!
Chris

McCain's status as P.O.W. = STAR TREK'S CLOAKING DEVICE!

PART 2 (see above)
With that, I ask this complex and completely politically incorrect question that you will not hear uttered by one of the happily enslaved pundits and reporters from BIG MEDIA:
Does being a POW, even an "exemplary" POW, permanently qualify and install one as a "HERO?"

Of course, this question is muddied by the ever-changing definition of the word "HERO." The concept of HEROISM changes with the times and with the overriding culture, and most importantly, it changes with one's point of view ... making it nearly impossible to qualify.

Over time, a HERO has been:
mythic, superior, everyday, miraculous, epic, tragic, legendary, courageous, displaying a nobility of purpose, exemplary, a long crusty-rolled sandwich ... a champion seeking to support a lonely cause or right an awful wrong ... someone who has risked and sacrificed something near and dear to their hearts.

Today we seem to confuse a "role model" with the role of a hero. I've seen the media describe those who are "doing the jobs" they sought and were trained for, as heroes. Firefighters, police officers, marathon runners, bounty hunters, astronauts, animals ... even athletes are bestowed with this title. Was Michael Jordan really a HERO? Have will killed the meaning of the word? With 24/7 news formats, copy writers have lots of time to fill on-air. Perhaps today's hero was borne of dead-air panic as writers hammered out stories for the ever-chattering talking heads to spew.

I have little motivation to deride or diminish the POW experience of John McCain but I sure don't want him martyred beyond recognition as a human either. One could now look upon the turbulence brought on by the Vietnamese War and argue that the college "peaceniks" who stuck daisies in the rifle barrels of the National Guard, after the brutality of Kent State, showed very real courage and heroism in an act that actually did save lives.

I DON'T HAVE THE ANSWER TO THE P.O.W. QUERY. Kicking it around, positively, would be a good patriotic start though, don't you think?

Could we ask this in response to my original question (the old "can we answer a question with a question?" trick).

Would a modern-era nation (any nation) be guilty of shattering their integrity by saying that being held captive against one's will is, in and of itself, symbolic of true heroism? If its true that each beating McCain took was a blow absorbed for us and for democracy, isn't it also true that this POW/Hero also killed innocent civilians on his bombing runs prior to capture? What about the Senator's enemy combatants ... the "other" warrior pilots. Did their relentless air defense (David to our Goliath), in knocking American jets out of the skies, make them heroes? Were the American pilots who performed their missions flawlessly, avoiding the loss of secrets and evading capture, any more heroic than the POW's who had mission failures? In the end, do the most talented and successful air warriors get cheated on the heroism scale?

IS IT FAIR TO ASK HIM ABOUT HIS FLYING DAYS? Most people don't know that John McCain's father and grandfather were famous four-star Navy Admirals. A number of his fellow flyers of that time have classified him as a below-average student and a "lousy pilot." Some claim that his family connections were behind his being awarded 28 medals for roughly 20 hours in enemy airspace. The Senator lost a total of 5 jets in his years of service - 4 in accidents and 1 in combat. I don't believe his record represents "cream of the crop" Top Gun performance but its a topic that's totally off-limits to our journalists so I don't know how to frame his performance in service to our country. He will never be asked about those days ... for all the wrong reasons.

McCain's status as P.O.W. - STAR TREK CLOAKING DEVICE!

HERE'S THE FINAL PIECE TO THE MCCAIN P.O.W. CLOAKING DEVICE (sorry for the length!)

Since heroes are defined by their time and context, I would suggest (on Sunday, September 7th at 3:00 PM EST) that HEROISM might be best divined by what it is THE HERO TEACHES US ... bestowing upon the hero a bit of timelessness that goes beyond the grave. If Joan of Arc is confined by context and the age in which she lived, then let us ask "What did she teach us that is still rare and relevant today?" Based on what we know to date, what are John McCain's lessons to us? With genuine respect, I ask what is rare and relevant about his stay at The Hanoi Hilton and why should we allow his acts to cushion him against the very same harsh personal questions that each American candidate is subjected to?

Does anybody else want to know about his psychological and emotional state and the effects of the PTSD that must, at times, haunt him? Am I petty to be concerned that his responses to the stresses of the modern presidency might reflect some pathology owed to five years of on-again, off-again torture, routine abuse and exhaustion?

Can't we also ponder if HEROISM HAS AN EXPIRATION DATE?

Does a heroic act fade? Does heroism become irrelevant if the hero becomes human and ordinary once again? Can you wipe away your own heroic behavior by a lifetime of quiet corruption. Is there an unwanted antidote to heroism that effectively negates the hero's good contribution (a la John McCain's less-than-compassionate divorce of his first wife who had been disfigured in a vicious car wreck while waiting for his return from Hanoi?).

Is the truth that heroism is a messy affair if the act occurs in your youth and you're given the entirety of a lifetime to re balance the scales with all-too-human behavior? Do those who die amid their heroic act get off easy?

I believe that HEROISM always seeks to protect, at nearly any cost, THE INTEGRITY OF THE GREATER GOOD. How does Senator John McCain's status as a former prisoner-of-war (now 41 years ago) affect your own individual political stance? How, if at all, does it contribute to your intention to vote for him? How does it interfere with the citizens' right to know his mind and his heart, along with his voting record on the hill?

What do you think?

STAY WELL AND STAY FROSTY THIS ELECTION SEASON.

Chris/whip-smart

P.S. Sadly, rumors that report on the demise of the American "Middle Class" are true and must be heeded as it was the "rising middle class" or "working class" that, not only personified and differentiated our country, but fueled and made unique the social and economic power of the American Dream.

These are two women with brains and guts, a refreshing departure from the hate-mongering Barbie airheads on F News. As for McCain, please see Vietnam Veterans Against McCain. Just because someone entrenched in the military by virtue of birth is paraded before the public as a "hero" doesn't make him one.

Maybe what Rachel Maddow doesn't leave bloody and broken in the street, Henry Rollins can step up and kick the hell out of it. One issue and one issue only from now until November: eight years of the double asshole ticket replaced by a slightly different double asshole ticket. How is the McCain-Palin ticket anything other than regressive politics, or just as bad-maintaining the status quo. Nothing that any of these fascists say or believe (two different concepts completely) holds up under scrutiny. How sad that people who want to believe the Republican party fielded viable candidates also vote without a single thought inside their pointy heads.
