Caught on Tape: Top GOP Pundits Call Palin "Political Bullsh*t"

Posted by ZP Heller, Talking Points Memo at 4:32 PM on September 3, 2008.

Listen as they disparage McCain's VP pick.

From HuffPo:

Wall Street Journal columnist and former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan and former John McCain adviser, Time columnist, and MSNBC contributor Mike Murphy were caught on tape disparaging John McCain's selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate.

"It's over," Noonan said.

When Chuck Todd asked her if this was the most qualified woman the Republicans could nominate, Noonan responded, "The most qualified? No. I think they went for this, excuse me, political bullshit about narratives. Every time the Republicans do that, because that's not where they live and that's not what they're good at, they blow it."

Murphy characterized the choices as "cynical" and "gimmicky."

(Full transcript after the flip.)

Full transcript:

Chuck Todd: Mike Murphy, lots of free advice, we'll see if Steve Schmidt and the boys were watching. We'll find out on your blackberry. Tonight voters will get their chance to hear from Sarah Palin and she will get the chance to show voters she's the right woman for the job Up next, one man who's already convinced and he'll us why Gov. Jon Huntsman.

(cut away)

Peggy Noonan: Yeah.

Mike Murphy: You know, because I come out of the blue swing state governor world: Engler, Whitman, Tommy Thompson, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush. I mean, these guys -- this is how you win a Texas race, just run it up. And it's not gonna work. And --

PN: It's over.

MM: Still McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech to do himself some good.

CT: I also think the Palin pick is insulting to Kay Bailey Hutchinson, too.

PN: Saw Kay this morning.

CT: Yeah, she's never looked comfortable about this --

MM: They're all bummed out.

CT: Yeah, I mean is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?

PN: The most qualified? No! I think they went for this -- excuse me-- political bullshit about narratives --

CT: Yeah they went to a narrative.

MM: I totally agree.

PN: Every time the Republicans do that, because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at, they blow it.

MM: You know what's really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical.

CT: This is cynical, and as you called it, gimmicky.

MM: Yeah.

Digg!

. . . just went over the top 10 Google searches of "Sarah Palin +" ??? on CNN . . . number 7 was "Peggy Noonan", yet for some reason she skipped right over that item.

Good on Paul Begala though, he brought it up not two or three minutes later.

Any chance this clip will see the light of day in the MSM after tonight?

At least the full text and the disparaging part. It will be artfully edited. Which is why the American voter will remain ignorant of the dismal lack of qualifications and experience -- a lack that would not be acceptable if Palin were a man -- and should, therefore, be perceived as a resounding insult to women everywhere who are asking to be judged by the same metrics as men are. No, the ignorant American voter will only hear the "human interest" story of Palin's teenage pregnant daughter and the Down's syndrome baby she birthed earlier this year.

Wow, don't you just LOVE live mics?

This is better than Jessie Jackson wanting to castrate Obama.

Of course it will not get the same amount of play in the media but what great validation that repugs are LYING when they get out there and say Sarah Palin is a great pick.

They have to say that, or they will be castrated by Karl Rove and their nuts fed to Keith Olbermann on a silver platter!!!

TV production 101: Do not EVER say ANYTHING near a microphone you do not want broadcast!

HA! HA! HA!

Luv,
Granny

McCain's Pet Chimera

The candor is refreshing, if inadvertent. Palin is energizing the hard-core fundamentalist wackos who constitute the party's base, but this chimera of Ellie Mae Clampett and Alexis Carrington will drive all thoughtful people into the Democratic camp. The delegates' comments in support of her are downright bizarre, and the speakers' assertions that they are the party of limited government, freedom and prosperity won't fool many people.

Unselfconscious, candid neo-cons abandon the talking points and expressing an honest opinion. Risking it all for a public display of heart-on-your-sleeve assessment of this sea change for pure political expediency could be social suicide for these drones of the hive mind. Begrudgingly hand over a few points for chutzpah. What's next, Larry Craig gets the ball back on the hash marks?

In my strong opinion I say:
It was a very hasty and botched up choice. She AIN'T NO HILLARY!!! She couldn't light a candle to HILLARY even in eight years' time. There is something fundamentally lacking in her focus, her persona. Not VP material, not by a long stretch. Again, that is my observation and my opinion.

And the unfolding of all that surrounds her life is clearly showing that it was a huge mistake and if this article is on the money, the top notch Repub's mentioned knew it, saw it as well. Amazing!

It is broke and there is only one way to fix it! The foreign press has already spelled it out and provided the answer to fixing it!

Sarah Palin has more "executive" experience than Barak Obama. Please.
How long has his campaign been on the road now? How big is his organization? How many states is it currently functioning in? How many employees does it have and how many volunteers does it coordinate? How much money does it generate and spend? Running a campaign for national office can be compared to producing a major motion picture. Both have huge budgets. Both pull many talented people together for an intense period of time towards one end. Both require superior strategy, professional time management and first class organizational skills. Both have scripts.
Campaigns, of course, have to improvise and react. Films much less so.
If beating Hillary Clinton's machine does not qualify as "executive experience" than the phrase has lost it's meaning

Our media has become so "managed" it can't even say "SH*T" when its being crammed down their throats.

If more people in positions of responsibility would actually speak truth we'd all be better off.

Are the Rovians playing us for fools and whipping up a tempest in a teapot, all the while planning to throw Sarah Palin overboard to put in the more palatable Tom Ridge or even Mike Huckabee so late in the game that counterattacks won't be effective? Are Keith and Rachel and Thom Hartmann going along with this palaver for the ratings? See litigationandtrial.com -- Fool Us Twice; Sarah Palin is Not The Candidate, by Maxwell Kennerly.

The one where he "innocently" said words to this effect: "My fellow Americans, we begin bombing the Soviets in three minutes." Was it gallows humor, a not so subtle warning to an adversary, or a prank?

Perhaps Peggy Noonan wanted to throw the Democrats off track with false assurances that top GOP advisors lacked confidence in Palin. Perhaps not. But my point is, don't be so sure that things are what they appear to be. In American politics as in business, the manipulation of perceptions wins both sales and elections, and the losing candidates may be your own.
