It's Election Day, 2008. We Democrats are giving America a wake up call. Wake up America. In 2001, the oil companies, the war contractors and the neo-con artists seized the economy, and have added four trillion dollars of unproductive spending to the national debt.

We now pay four times more for defense, three times more for gasoline and home heating oil, and twice what we paid for health care. Millions of Americans have lost their jobs, their homes, their health care, their pensions. Trillions of dollars for an unnecessary war paid with borrowed money. Tens of billions of dollars in cash and weapons disappeared into thin air, at the cost of the lives of our troops and innocent Iraqis, while all the President's oilmen are maneuvering to grab Iraq's oil.

Borrowed money to bomb bridges in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. No money to rebuild bridges in America. Money to start a hot war with Iran. Now we have another cold war with Russia while the American economy has become a game of Russian roulette.

If there was an Olympics for misleading, mismanaging and misappropriating this Administration would take the gold. World records for violations of national and international laws. They want another four year term to continue to alienate our allies, spend our children's inheritance and hollow out our economy. We can't afford it America.

Wake up America, the insurance companies took over health care. Wake up America, the pharmaceutical companies took over drug pricing. Wake up America, the speculators took over Wall Street. Wake up America, they want to take your Social Security. Wake up America, multinational corporations took over our trade policies, factories are closing, good paying jobs lost.

Wake up, America. We went into Iraq for oil. The oil companies want more. War against Iran will mean $10 a gallon gasoline. The Oil Administration wants to drill more -- into your wallet. Wake up, America. Weapons contractors want more. An Iran war will cost five to ten trillion dollars.

This Administration can tap our phones. They can't tap our creative spirit. They can open our mail. They can't open economic opportunities. They can track our every move. They lost track of the economy while the cost of food, gasoline, and electricity skyrockets.

They skillfully played our post- 911 fears and allowed the few to profit at the expense of the many. Everyday we get the color orange, while the oil companies, the insurance companies, the speculators, the war contractors get the color green.

Wake up America. This is not a call for you to take a new direction from right to left.

This is call for you to go from down to up. Up with the rights of workers.

Up with wages.

Up with fair trade.

Up with creating millions of good paying jobs rebuilding our bridges, ports and water systems. Up with creating millions of sustainable energy jobs to lower the cost of energy, lower carbon emissions and protect the environment.

Up with health care for all.

Up with education for all.

Up with home ownership.

Up with guaranteed retirement benefits.

Up with Peace.

Up with Prosperity.

Up with the Democratic Party

Up with Obama - Biden

Wake up, America.

Wake up, America.

Wake up, America.

Digg!

Quite plainly the clearest statement of liberal/progressive values thusfar at the convention. These are the same values which Dennis tried to enunciate during the primaries, but which the ForProfit media muzzled.

Someday, the party leadership will wise the hell up and give Dennis some primetime. They'll be surprised by the positive response.

Despite some of the best oratory the convention has heard, Dennis was STILL muzzled by his own party from mentioning the "I" word.

There is no need to wonder why this brave man's voice is not heard. We the people are not in control of this media, this party, or this government. Any belief you might have that your opinion matters is a total illusion. Forget the convention, go out and join the protesters.

I was made aware of this fantastic speech by the Yahoo news feed on my email. Honestly, the last place I look for useful news, & more to the point, hardly the first place I should have seen it.

The first place should have been here. Perhaps the Alternet staff were busy getting massages over at the Huffington Post spa? Well, better late than never.

Tonight, I watched the overflowing hall react to Hillary Clinton's (decent) speech with the appropriate gusto, while President Clinton looked on with seemingly genuine emotion. Before & after the broadcast, the PBS election talkers blabbed continuously. One of them listed his favorite "most effective" speeches from the first two days of the convention, omitting Kucinich entirely. I wonder if he even watched it.

Kucinich's speech took place on the equivalent of a music festival's third stage, during a lull, with attendees largely off sleeping or schmoozing. The room was maybe only 1/2 full, yet his welcome was warm. To watch the crowd come alive with his fiery words (& credit is due to the unusually dynamic CSPAN camera work) was amazing. In contrast to the almost scripted fervor in response to the higher profile speakers, here we saw people genuinely reacting with joy. Almost as if they were starting to remember something long forgotten, yet... important.

As more & more people began spontaneously standing & shouting along, looks of surprised recognition spreading from face to face, you could see people shaking off 18 long months of careful obedience. You could see, if only for a moment, a stirring.

Wake up, America, indeed.

Thanks, Dennis.

Obama + Kucinich and The Democrats might actually have stood a very good chance of winning.

Instead Obama has chosen a liability.

I don't get it.

Aren't you supposed to choose your best team if you want to win?

Good Speech, Game Show Format.

It was a very good speech as written, but the Youtube video was nothing more than a Hollywood game show format. Are the Dems really stupid, or are we? Are we so brainwashed by TV that we need this kind of introduction to a statesman with an important speech at the convention. I feel as if I have heard that song a thousand times. The camera work was perfect as well. Dennis definately needs to speak in front of live audiences. The TV does not serve him well, albeit more people can see him and hear the message. My main point is we have got to get this country back and I don't know if it can be done by treating this election as if we are trying to appease our viewers. It's time for hard talk and tough action. I hope by November it will be an all out brawl. There is no doubt that dirty politics are to be played out. Obama had better come out swinging and get some bling bling for his crew if he wants to stage a real show that people want to watch. The most popular things out there are hip hop music and video and World Wrestling. Americans are ready for some mud slinging. Don't listen to the republicans. Sometimes softies never win. I think Obama is saving his punches, but I hope he has some heavy weights ready to back him up, because the Republican's are waiting to cry "Foul". "The "put adjective here" man pushed me." "Crybaby Sounds, whimpers evoking sympathy" The republicans want to push that emotional response button as soon as possible. Race will be part of this campaign. Take the high road Obama, and come out swinging to save the ranch, because you are the good guy and the audience is ready to believe. we're ready because we know the truth. Dennis throws a good punch and so can Hillary. We are going to need some powerful words, backed up by strong reasoning why Americans should reject the use of Novacaine in their white House. (SORRY, McCAin...I'll never vote for you)

again tells the country what they need to hear.

Another commenter mentioned above the lack of the "I" word. I think even Dennis would agree that last night was not the time.

It is disturbing that so few were in the hall to hear it but I think it's great that he was heard at all.

I'll never understand how the vast majority of Americans can repeatedly fail to see that Kucinich is exactly who we need to occupy the U.S. Presidency. He is the only one that clearly addresses the vital issues facing our country and clearly speaks out in favor of "we the people" and offers specifics on how to restore our economy, restore our Constitutional rights, restore our international reputation, and fight against the corporate conspiracy that has compromised (bribed) our Congress, controlled our media, enriched the amoral war profiteers, rewarded the wealthy, lied & repeatedly broken U.S. & International law, depleted our Treasury, and figuratively screwed the rest of us!

America, "Wake Up"...you've blown a great opportunity! The DNC should be completely replaced for not supporting this man against the unconscionable muzzling of his candidacy by the MSM. CNN and the AP are my two main sources of 'regular' U.S. news here in Thailand and I can tell you honestly that BBC is giving much better unbiased coverage of the Democratic Convention and just about any online (non-mainstream) news source is better than the corporate owned Associated Press!!!

I don't think Obama will effect much change in American politics but he will be a respite and a breath of fresh air after the disaster of Bush/Cheney. If the greedy, rapacious Republican hooligans somehow manage to steal another election for McSlime, then you'd better pack up your kids & few remaining possessions and move elsewhere for Amerika is on the verge of becoming a complete Fascist nation and will have no qualms about enslaving the lot of you!

Between Dennis & Teddy no clearer messege could be heard then..We Reject, Rebuke and disown any body which does not put Human rights and Labor above Corps.
Wake Up DLC, we have smelled your corp whore stench for the last 2 elections. As Dems we voted for them- but we did NOT support them.
Ya think we did get a Wif of your 'Third Way' aka "New World Order"?. Ya think we did not see the way you were trying to part & parcel out the Demcoratic party. ya think we were not pissed when Hillary tried to divide the Equal rights movement by Race & Gender?
Ya think you did not start making Us suspecious with NAFT, which we have been vindicated in our reservations? Ya think you did not tip your hand on 'Don't ask ,Don't Tell', ya think we did not notice WallStreet getting richer in the '90's. Ya think we did not find the Re birth of "lead Sleds" curious, shortsighted and Potentially a Re- ignitor to more issues with citizens of Middle east Oil rich contries?
Ya think we did not watch you vote to invading Afghanistan Or Iraq Watched (and your lack of caution, or curiousity).Watched you beat drums about Iran & N.Korea. ya think we may be against acting against Russia?
Ya Think DLC, it's time to sit down shut up and let the real Dems win this election.
Yes,the last 2 elections were Rigged, but you must realize you never inspired US Because of your ACTIONS. I have to wonder, You seem so much like the Neo Cons, could you actually be the same party hiding behind both colors?YEP, no Doubt agbout it now, Hillary exposed her allegience to the 'Third Way'- corporate Rule.

Our leader's voice - spread it!
Posted by: chorton on Aug 27, 2008 8:31 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Yes, we have many leaders; but Dennis is clearly our leader in the House and on the Convention floor. He has earned that leadership over and over again with his passion, clarity and loyalty to the people. And as grumble-bum pointed out, the reaction on the floor shows that he speaks to and for the heart of the rank-and-file of the DP. As fsuthai observes he is exactly who we need for president, the one who best articulates the peoples' outrage and the program the people need.

Many of you write of the love you feel for Dennis. But know that it is the love that is inside yourself that you feel, not something that is a property of Kucinich. It was not born with him and will not die with him. Rather it is something that he calls forth from us, and he evokes it as he calls on us to love each other and our common dreams for our children; as he calls on us to join with each other in taking our country back! It is *our* love, and he is but the spokesman for it!

Now Dennis is passionately calling on us to throw ourselves into the task of electing Obama/Biden and defeating McCain. Let's honor the trust and love he has won from us by taking heed and rising to the challenge!

Don't look for the DP leadership to honor and respect him, to raise him to leadership in the campaign or give him a cabinet post. He represents the potential for an insurrection within the DP, the possibility of the rank and file throwing out the corrupt humbugs with their cozy deals with the moneybags, and claiming the party for the people! The possibility of a democratic Democratic Party! The Clintons, the Bidens and the Obamas are terrified of him and of what he represents. But this is not the time to repeat the call to "throw the bums out"; the next few months are for taking on the battle to throw Darth Vader and Dr. Strangelove out of the White House, for rallying the people to save what's left of America's democratic institutions and create an opening for progress. A time for creating an opening for a great movement for progressive solutions to the unfolding catastrophe.

Imagine we were in a corrupt union, whose leaders were cozy with the bosses and had sold us out time and again. Now imagine we were going into a strike situation where the company was out to break the union. Would we not at that time drop our attacks on the leadership and rally the brothers and sisters to win the strike and save the union? But we wouldn't expect the union bosses to be grateful and become our friends! We'd watch them like a hawk, knowing how faint-of heart they are beneath their brave words, pushing them to fight and win, pushing a winning agenda, always alert and ready to block them from selling out or making fatal compromises. And win or lose, the struggle for a rank-and-file union would resume when the strike was over! The union bosses would never for a minute forget about that, and neither would we!

So it is not Obama or Biden or the DLC that is going to embrace Dennis and use him as their voice. That's our job! Let's forward this video to everyone we know, and ask them to pass it on! Then let's get out there and win this fight!

And don't forget to throw some spare change Dennis' way! He still faces a very-well-funded primary fight in his own district against a candidate from the DLC!

Dennis Kucinich gets it and is unafraid to speak of it. Dennis Kucinich has had tough times, tougher than many of us, but tough times that normal citzens experrience to a greater or lesser extent as a routine condition of their lives. Mr. Kucinich does not own eight houses nor does he reside in a ten million dollar manse in New York. Dennis Kucinich is truly one of us. I just don't understand how "us" can't seem to get that.

DK provides the only hope for this nation that I can muster, but it is such a small hope. When Mr. Kucinich can run for national office and truly represent "us," but can only attract 2-5% of the vote among Democrats, I really have to wonder if there is any hope at all. I have to wonder if Dennis Kucinich is the last citizen politician, the last people's representative that I will know in my lifetime.

By the end of the Presidential campaign, each candidate will have spent $350 million to $500 million dollars on that campaign. Senate and Gubenatorial races can cost $20-$30 million. This is not only obscene; it is insane. It is a mirror and an embodiment of the nation's psychotic and ludricous economic policy. In that sense, it is fitting, though it is guaranteeing the demise of any pretense of democracy.

I will continue to support a U.S. congressman, Dennis Kucinich, from another state far from my own because he needs to be in Congress. We, the people, need him to be in Congress. I applaud him for all that he has tried to do, but it is unsurprising, is it not? After all, he is one of "us."

In May 2007 and not only was he the most genuinely engaging famous person I've ever met, his speech was riveting. Most people don't know this because of the corporate-owned MSM's blackout on him, or them treating him like a joke. Still the man fights on.

I noticed too that the seats were empty and that was partly due to the time of day. In contrast, did anyone else notice Nancy Pelosi's abysmal speech and non-reaction from the crowd and empty seats? And hers was at prime time.

I hope Dennis keeps fighting the good fight. I'll continue to be a huge supporter of him. I can't even imagine what sort of hurdles he faces every day just trying to get the truth out.

Way to go, Dennis!!

. . . and although I'm not surprised the media ignored his speech, I'm amazed they got away with ignoring something so substantive. Especially considering they've been complaining about the lack of substance.

Anyway, as much as I love Dennis, I still get behind whoever the Dems pick. Stakes are just too high to allow the GOP another term.

...as I listened to this great patriot speak from his heart... as I saw the audience energized and hopeful at his words..as I listened to the clarity with which he sees what is, and the wisdom he imparts about what could be...as I thought about the effort we made to share his wisdom with our nation and as I came to the realization that we are not truly ready for change nor willing to stand up for the principles this nation used to represent.
It was a sad day for me indeed.

Rep. Kuchinch should have been the keynote speaker last night, not Mark Warner (who managed to put an alread-electrified audience to sleep). It was a barn burner!

But, Denis, why didn't you give speeches like this when you were a candidate?

The only reason Kucinich wasn't selected as the DNC's Candidate for the Whitehouse is due to corporate media. Kucinich is the real change the United States needs. Obama and Clinton aren't quite as bad as McCain, but they are Corporate pupits and hawkish as well.

I voted for Dennis Kucinich in the California Primary in 2008 and in 2004. He is the only candidate who is in favor of true Universal Health Care. To me, a 70 year old veteran, universal health care is a must! Dennis is the MAN!

To sum it up: More than the product of two Obamas times Biden times two Clintons times Edwards times the ENTIRE Democratic Party we NEED Rep. Dennis Kucinich to lead this country out of its corporate-controlled sewer of corruption and into a country we can be PROUD OF and the rest of the world can respect and model itself after. To illustrate how blind this country is; I got more votes in my district running as a delegate for DK in '04 than DK did himself! And sadly, I am an obscure nobody in my district! What does that say for the voter's intellect? Not a goddamn thing to be proud of, that's what it says! WAKE UP AMERICA!

the fact that the DNC marginalizes one of their best political warriors is reason why us democrats need to push back. when you get those mailers from the DNC asking for donations to fight the good fight, tell them i send my money to the real democratic party, the Dennis Kucinich campaign. this was one of the conventions best speeches. nancy pelosi, wake up.

Dennis is a true progressive, but the scandal is about Edwards not speaking

I'm glad they let him speak. He is one of us. A true progressive he is. But the fact that Edwards is not (I don't believe) scheduled to speak, because of an affair, and Bill Clinton IS speaking tonight, in spite of an affair, reveals a real scandal. Is it because Edwards referred to the Obama and Clinton as "corporate Democrats" during the Primary compaign? Or because the affair is more recent? Or what?

Our goal, as Charles Derber describes it in his book Hidden Power, is to change our third corporate regime from 1980 to today—a regime that is maintained by both major parties.

Change it to what? A new New Deal. Change it to the third progressive regime in the US since the Civil War. And change it to eliminate lawless, imperial militarism, for all time. That is what Kucinich stands for. And the Green Party. And the Congressional Progressive Caucus in the House. And the progressive caucuses in the state Democratic Parties, now numbering over 20.

it was as great to see Kucinich speak as it was to miss Edwards speaking in the same venue.

Dennis Kucinich is clearly a man of principle and strongly held beliefs. What a pity he is not our candidate for president. At least there is one voice expressing the outrage that so many people feel at the abuse we've endured for the last eight years of bush's term. Kucinich really speaks for the common man. He speaks for the disadvantaged and for the middle class. By the numbers, that's most Americans. Too bad most Americans are unable to recognize and vote in their best interest.

Up with Dennis and Ron Paul and out with every other member of congress. The rest are nothing more than bought off, unethical, phony criminals. Heavy on the criminal. But worse than that outside of Kucinich and Paul the rest are traitors to the American people and the constitution. That is why these two men are always welcome on the Alex Jones broadcast at infowars.com The rest I would suggest should stay away because traitors are treated poorly by info warriors.

Bottom line, write his name in or nader or any other man woman or child you believe will take this country in the right direction.. it certainly won't be obama who seems to be beholding to special interests and who continues to vote in so many ways with the administration on strategic issues. If this man kucinich would just leave the democratic party and start a new liberal/labor party.. i bet millions would follow.

I wish all our politicians had the same clear head and moral compass that this man has. Has anyone else mentioned impeachment at all? I would think that 4000+ American deaths, 500,000 Iraqi deaths, over 28,000 maimed US soldiers and 3 trillion in war spending - all based on giving false evidence to Congress might be enough. Thank you Dennis!

in the other self written and published blog that actually did Rock The DNC? You both show a lack of imagination and inspiration in naming your self ingratiating and published Alternet pieces the way you did.
Two prominent Democrats write articles on the same site at the same time and name the articles identically. Maybe you both could have named your articles "No Impeachment no matter what the crime" or maybe "When it comes to elections, impeachment is off the table" It's your own party cutting your throat there Dennis and not the Republicans. What do you have to say about that?

When did Alternet become an advertising platform for Democrats who write and publish articles about themselves.

I thought the Republicans were the lowest form of politician on the face of the earth but here comes another party running a close second. This is kind of like writing your own job performance evaluation.

discouraging to one who is wavering, anyway. If this convention helped Obama and the DNC (NO, they are NOT separate--if you stil think so after this week--youre a sheeple), it must be with people they already have. The Hill is reporting that Kucinich was denied a chance to say, in his speech , that Dubya , Cheney and Rummy should be convicted of war crimes. This is just NOT appropriate. There is also a report on Real News, on a comment to Naomi Klein's talk on "challenging Obama" (we're allowed to , you know--even after he wins..its true!! We DO NOT have to go with the King George stuff anymore!)about the neo-liberal fascism that is invading PDAmerica. (they were censoring their live feed )Hayden (formerly of SDS--lol) and soloman spent many hours there , just touting the old Obama stuff, and even asking, if "protest is relevant in the age of Obama"!!!!!! THIS, from Hayden?!Soloman is an Obama delegate. This is SO sold-out. I thought that 8 yrs of Dubya, would make the DNC learn that, in the long run, fascism doesnt work (see Ghandi). It seems they learned to be a neo-liberal version of GOP. Maybe they will win. The American people wont.

She's a true progressive who has spoken truth to power more than once in the halls of Congress.

The Democratic Party elite is just as corrupt as the Republican Party elite and beholden to the same interests. Those same interests now completely control the electoral process, so vote for McKinney and send them a message.

The Democrats have shown Dennis Kucinich that he no longer has a place in their party, he should move to the Greens as Ms. McKinney did.

Wake up, America!

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.
