Jane Mayer, author of The Dark Side, sat down with Bill Moyers on Friday to talk about the "atmosphere of intimidation" in the White House regarding the authorization of torture at Guantanamo.  According to Mayer, some Justice Department lawyers were so scared of being wiretapped by their own government they actually developed a system of talking in codes.

Here you had the top lawyers in our country—some of whom were conservative—sitting in on White House meetings and claiming that "lunatics had taken over the country."  And yet they were too afraid of Vice President Cheney to do anything about it.

Think Progress has more.

Digg!

The "promise" of America and our founding documents is unrivaled in the history of humankind

However, beginning with "christian" excusing of the genocide to take native American land, the fulfillment of that promise has NEVER come close. FDR's programs came closest to fulfilling the obligations of a democratic republic to all of its citizens, but greed, power, religion and bigotry (I guess religion and bigotry together are redundant, but what the hell) kept slavery going right to the present day and giving corporations the rights of individuals ensures a corporatocracy until the next revolution. Soon, I hope.
