This week's Meet the Bloggers was practically dripping in oil.  It's an issue affecting all of us, from the exorbitant price of gas to the war in Iraq, from the billions in subsidies for oil companies to the catastrophic environmental destruction brought on by Big Oil.  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) sat down with Meet the Bloggers host Cenk Uygur and FOX Attacks blogger Jonathan Kim to discuss ways to combat Big Oil and reach energy independence.

Sen. Reid emphasized the need to cut off government subsidies for oil companies and talked about how speculation has led to us paying up the "you-know-what" at the pump.  Uygur and and Kim also directed Reid's attention to the Republicans' overt lies about how unsafe offshore drilling is for our environment.  For instance, conservatives, led by John McCain, have been claiming that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita caused no oil spills, when the truth is that those two spills alone caused 124 spills for a total of 743,700 gallons, according to some estimates.

In part 2 of this interview, Sen. Reid explained ways to get off big oil and invest in alternative energy sources.  He fielded questions from the audience, and then praised bloggers for framing the energy debate and using their influence to combat Big Oil and conservatives alike.

That cued our featured bloggers: Kevin Grandia (DeSmogBlog), Nico Pitney (Huffington Post), and Matt Stoller (Open Left).  They discussed the oil framing game; who will truly benefit from offshore drilling; the biggest Republican flip-floppers on oil; the need to nationalize the oil industry; and the disastrous consequences of Republicans getting their way.  All told, it was a truly inspired discussion and hopefully it will prompt politicians to pay attention to this incredibly important issue.

This is a great video and Senator Reid details how the Republicans are doing all they can to maintain the increase in oil prices..

The Republicans are in favor of the criminal manipulation of the Futures Market and voted against the Bill that would have begun to address this asymmetrical economic warfare against the American people and even our allies..

The Republicans also voted against the increase in the HEAP benefits that will be needed by the elderly, disabled and poor this winter more than ever...due to the prices which the Republicans have caused to double due to their obsession with deregulation the Enron Loophole, London Loophole and Goldman Sachs Loophole and the Enron e-trading which allows this criminal manipulation to go on in dark markets..without any oversight or knowing who is doing what to drive up these prices...

The Republicans need these high gas prices and want to maintain them as they are using them for leverage to get off shore Oil drilling where it has been banned and also in ANWAR...

Why the Democrats are not able to let America know it is the Republican Senators and Congress that are keeping these Oil prices high no matter how much harm it does America is beyond me..

This is a hammer I would be beating them with daily...

The Republicans are at war with America's economy and doing serious damage to our dollar as well..

This is one of the biggest swindles in world history and thus the Republicans are guilty of nothing less than Treason and this must be said everywhere on the web..as our MSM will never cover or address or expose this..

Like Gore, the guy's nothing but an all talk no play shithead. For 4 years he had a chance to show that he was better than Daschle and he FAILED and GAGGED ! 9 out of 10 times, he caved in to the GOP big time and if you don't believe me, then go take a look at his FUCKING voting record these last 4 years and look at his previous years before 2005 as well. Harry Reid, please get the FUCK out of Washington and keep your "nice and cozy" GOP lobbyists who stuffed your FUCKING campaign to yourself ! America needs real bold leadership, not the pansy type leadership that acts like an abused spouse always caving into his/her abusive partner !

As soon as we start to leave Iraq and stop talking about attacking Iran the price of oil will start declining. If the US government begins to spend some serious money on alternative energy projects and says that its long term objective is to withdraw from all dealing with the hostile middle eastern countries, the price of a barrel of oil will return to pre-2000 levels.
