The UpTake's Chuck Olsen interviews author Irwin Tang about his book, "Gook: John McCain's Racism and Why It Matters."

McCain first used the word "gook" in the mass media in his 1973 article for U.S. News & World Report. The word appears 12 times in the article and is available online here.

Most recently, McCain used the term in his 2000 presidential campaign, as documented by the San Francisco Chronicle.

To learn more about Mr. Tang's book, which also details McCain's connection to white supremacist groups, visit his web site: http://irwinbooks.com/

This is yet another stark example of the seriously underdeveloped levels of humanity, compassion and understanding prevalent in America's current and aspiring conservative, neocon, corporate-controlled 'leadership class' (monarchy?).

These types lessen us all through the taint of their collective, primitive and seemingly total lack of awareness, particularly if we allow their views to thrive (as in not doing anything to stop them!). This applies to backwaters rife with corruption - like Crawford, Texas perhaps - to wherever else (e.g. Washington) sad chushrovians and mcwannabes scrabble about in their own excrement, abusing and exploiting vulnerable innocents through blatant lies and childish ploys in short-sighted efforts to maintain acceptance and the all-important 'mantle of power'.

It's a tragedy these types are still around, and moreso that we actually allow them responsiblility. As with other 'undesirables' why not simply ensure they are somewhere that doesn't give them access to anything that could cause injury to themselves or others.

After all they are sick, are they not?

Alternet is a racist site which publishes racist articles(The Taliban Strikes Back). Why then post this with a title on John McCain’s racists sentiments? Is it okay to be racist against some and not others according to you people? You use his racist views to further your own political agenda but don’t object to the racist views of your writers, the hypocrisy.

Alternet publishes Gary Brecher's ignorant racism but questions John McCain for less

You object to John McCain’s’ usage of the term “gook’ but apparently think nothing of publishing an entire article by any ignorant racist whose diatribe smearing an entire ethnic group includes words like “backwoods” hillbilly” “strange” and an insistence that all members are homosexual pedophiles and as a people having “the most anti-women attitude of any tribe on earth” although the author fails to reveal where he has acquired any of his intimate knowledge from. Frankly I think “gook’ pales in comparison to such lengthy and contemptuous descriptions.

While the use of Hajji for a Muslim is more prevalent in Iraq, it is also used throughout the Middle East and in Central Asian countries like Afghanistan. While it is often used as a word to describe the locals in general, it is almost always used in an derogatory manner.

Prior to deploying to Afghanistan, I worked hard to get my fellow Guardsmen to *not* use this term, pointing out that Haj and Hajjii is a honorific used by Muslims to show they have made the pilgrimage to Mecca. Using this term in lieu of something like "towel-head or rag-head" or what ever is especially insulting as it is not only racist, but profane as well.

However, it's an easy practice to pick up. On bad days, days where the locals blame you for things that are CLEARLY the fault of the Taliban, you find words like this slipping out of your mouth. It's what happens when you have to deal with your own issues of "why am I here doing these things."

Also rather rampant is using anti-Semitic slurs for stealing. I corrected many a soldier for using the word "Jew" or "Kike" instead of steal as in, "Hey man, why did you kike my soda?" and I found many didn't even know what it meant; they had just picked it up from other soldiers.

Problem with the military is that we're professional killers (comes with the job) and to do that, dehumanizing your opponent is often an easy way out of adhering to the Laws of War, discipline and duty.
