Written by veteran media critic and Emmy winner Rory O'Connor, Shock Jocks features unsparing profiles of the ten worst conservative radio talkers in America, including Michael Savage, Bill O' Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Don Imus and the rest.

Shock Jocks highlights the politicized and often factually challenged world of talk radio that dominates a sizable portion of America's airwaves, and shows how misogyny, racism, and utter contempt for other human beings is disguised as “free speech”.

This scathing account also details the progressive alternatives fighting for airtime, and what you can do to help.

"Talk radio is one of America's most popular and influential media formats. In his book, Shock Jocks: Hate Speech and Talk Radio, Rory O'Connor reports on the shocking number of top radio talk show hosts who regularly spout hate speech over our public airwaves. This intriguing, eye-opening and hugely important work is a must read account of the dangers of blurring opinion, journalism and entertainment -- at the expense of our democratic discourse and ideals." - Walter Cronkite

I love that Cronkite quote!

2 days ago I was talking with a friend from Colombia, and I was trying to explain who Bill O'Reilly is. She didn't understand the word "pundit" and asked, "so, is he a reporter or an entertainer?" and I had to say "well... sort of BOTH but then again sort of NEITHER!"

the opinions of tiny-minded people like my ex-husband, who think that rush limbaugh shits bricks of purest Au. these irresponsible broadcasters verbally pat their listeners on the back and allow them to continue to grip their racist, sexist, homophobic opinions without any possibility of reflection on whether or not the opinions are correct, fair, "christian" or in the spirit of the founders of the country that allows this kind of hate to be spewed over the airwaves. i rejoice whenever the foibles of people like rush (sooo appropriate for the prescription abusing pillhead) are made public, not that this ever seems to affect the loyal listeners. sad.

Shock Jocks Have Much to Answer For

Besides the very good examples shown in this video, I was reminded of my own "take" on the so-called "shock jocks" of radio.

In 1995 along with every other American, I was extremely distressed over the Oklahoma Bombing. It wasn't long before I laid the blame not only at the perpetrators Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, but also directly at the feet of Rush Limbaugh.

In their sick minds the bombers must not have realized that that person working behind the desk processing social security applications was somebody's wife, mother, daughter or sister. They couldn't have cared that the babies and toddlers who died that day could have become a great leader or fine citizen. (Who can ever forget the picture of that numb fireman carrying a dead child in his arms?)

If you are of the mindset as these two skin heads were and listen day after day to a program that blasts "the evil blood sucking government", listen gleefully to all "what's wrong with this country" from his perspective, that "drastic action has to be taken to make things right again", (preferably led only by staunch conservatives), if you're angry enough you're going to eventually believe that you have a right to take down a bad institution.

I can barely stand one minute listening to the likes of all the "jocks" mentioned and to read this important book would increase my already high blood pressure even higher.

In one of his first official duties, Ronald Reagan rescinded the "Fairness in Broadcasting" law that served us well for decades. Every once in awhile you hear rumblings of it being re-introduced but it doesn't seem to go anywhere.

It should, and the sooner the better.
