Barack Obama, who has a history of talking tough on terrorism, took it a step further while addressing the American Israel Public Affairs Committee this past Wednesday, stating "We must isolate Hamas unless they renounce terrorism, recognize Israel's right to exist and abide by past agreements." Hamas holds the majority of seats in the legislative council of the Palestinian Authority, making their political wing the ruling party as a result of free and fair elections in January 2006.

Given Obama's calls for diplomacy when dealing with Iran and North Korea, it seems strange that the Senator would call for isolationism against the Palestinian people's elected officials. Someone needs to tell Obama there's a difference between being strong on terrorism, and isolating a democratically elected government because of pressure from special interest groups.

Obama has abandoned his roots on this issue in particular. I understand that there are some things you "have to say" to get elected. But this is inconsistent with his intelligent and correct policies regarding other "official enemies."

He used to use "pro-Palestinian" rhetoric, and seems to have forgotten. The Palestinian people continue to be punished for having an election, but voting the wrong way. There are good reasons why Hamas won that election and they are distinct from Hamas' policies towards Israel. Even so, Hamas recently condemned the Holocaust and Hamas leadership says they are willing to accept Israel's 'right to exist' (even though some Hamas members have distanced themselves from that- the leadership stands by it).

Obama, please do not take your cues from the Republicans: "once our adversary does what we want, then we will negotiate." That makes no sense. You negotiate TO get them to do what you want not because they have already done what you want!

Hamas was transparently and legitimately elected. Crikey. This is bizarre. I hope Obama crushes
McCain, but Israel (the state, not the Jewish people, from whose ancestry I share) is deservant of much criticism. Hmph! Bizarre, indeed! Well I guess Palestinians are filth and there is no such thing as oppression, especially when your oppressors were once brutalized themeslves. Then everything is peachy friggin keen. May Palestinians starve in peace.

Obama lost my vote when he went to AIPAC on bended knee

I have nothing against Jews, but I do stand with the 64% of Israelis who want talks with Hamas. I also admire the work of B'Tselem , the Israeli human rights organization. I agree with everything the first poster said. Hamas WAS democratically elected in elections that were observed by international monitors. As far as I'm concerned, Israel is conducting a slow genocide of the Palestinians. I am frankly tired of the blatant one-sidedness of the arguments here in the US and the censorship of views which favor the rights of Palestinians.

Interesting. Obama announced on a Tuesday night and visited AIPAC Wednesday. Were they his biggest supporters throughout his campaign? It's obvious his biggest priority after clinching the nomination was to rush to assure AIPAC that he will allow them to continue killing and starving Palestinians. Sad.

I guess those who say Obama will turn out to be more of the same are right. He is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Nothing will change in the Middle East. I am voting third-party, most likely for Cynthia McKinney. I have voted in every Presidential election since 1980, so don't tell me I am throwing my vote away. I believed that garbage for far too long and caved into the fear factor at the end. If we ALL threw our votes away, well, maybe the corporate-controlled Dems would start listening to us.

Even Barack Obama succumbed to the power of the Irael Lobby.

I left Alternet for awhile campaigning for Barack Obama and blogging mostly on his website. His recent Israel Lobby's asskissing episode truly digusted me. I knew he did it for political purpose. Early on he dared to mention something about "...the Palestinians are the ones who suffer." and he got attacked by all sides. So he learned it like the rest of them and started to kiss some Iraeli balls. Disgusting!!! He not only offered up the whole Jerusalem to the Israeli but approved their preemptive strike on Seria's alleged nuclear site. He advocated giving them 30 billion without conditions. Why don't he just clusterbomb the feaking Palestinians to take them out of their misery. This is totally opposite to his claim of "talking to our adversary without pre-conditions." Now that he's won the nomination, he's playing politics just like all before him. I understand the Muslim smear but he didnot have to kiss those balls at AIPAC. I would still vote for him but my enthusiasm for his candidacy is all but dead. "Hope and Change" appears to happen only here, not in Palestine, not when the powerful Israel Lobby is running this country, unfortunately. Something must be done about this ruthless control.

I was very disappointed in Obama. The first step in solving the problems in the Middle Easy is to end the blank check support of Israel. This is a state that was founded upon and maintains itself by terrorism and militarism. Stop bullying Iran about their legitimate right to have nuclesr power, and dismantle Israel's nuclear weapons capability! It is Israel that is attacking everyone, not Iran, and it is Israel that is committing cultural genocide of the Palestineans. ISRAEL and the US are the problems, not Iran.

Let The Truth Be Told

Senator Obama's performance at AIPAC was a sad revelation of the way things really work. As Lewis Lapham so succinctly put it, we have the pageant government and we have the permanent government. The kneeling at the altar of AIPAC, is the pageant government revealing, ever so briefly, the mechanics of the permanent government.
