Earlier this year I began taking my video camera out to the Castro, San Francisco's gay neighborhood, to talk to people about social change. I wanted to explore how we LGBT folk see ourselves in relation to a broader movement for social, racial, and economic justice. The project has evolved into a video blog called Castro in the Streets.

In March, Director Gus Van Sant put out an open call for extras to recreate Gay Freedom Day from June of 1978 for his upcoming film about Harvey Milk. I went to talk to people about what Harvey Milk represents to our community, and how the Castro has changed since the 70s.

I wonder how many people remember Harvey Milk.

And how out and proud he was, and how proud everyone was of him. He was the first openly gay person to hold a high-profile public office--ANY public office, actually, and in addition to being an asset to the administration of the city of San Francisco, he was a symbol of hope to gay folks and other underdogs everywhere.

I hesitate to make this comparison, and hasten to say that I pray every single day for the safety and forward movement of Barack and his beautiful family, but in many ways, Harvey was like Barack is for us. Black folk can tell their children to look there--it's a man of color there in the White House--now go and study so you can be there someday. White folks can feel good that at least ONCE in a history crippled by racism, good, true people voted for the best man to be President, and put race aside. At least once.

We all felt the tragedy of Harvey Milk's death. It was the senseless act of a low individual, but it scared us all, and set the movement toward equality for gay folks back years. It set the movement toward equality for ALL people back years. Until maybe NOW, in fact.

I'm really looking forward to this film.

I'm happy they are FINALLY making a film about Harvey Milk and that Sean Penn is playing him. I am hoping to land an interview with Penn and hear him talk about this experience. Visit my NEW blog to keep posted....
