Gun control certainly isn't something to joke about, neither is the assassination of a presidential nominee. And yet Mike Huckabee did both yesterday while addressing the NRA.

From CNN:

During a speech before the National Rifle Association convention Friday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky, former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee — who has endorsed presumptive GOP nominee John McCain — joked that an unexpected offstage noise was Democrat Barack Obama looking to avoid a gunman.

“That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he's getting ready to speak,” said the former Arkansas governor, to audience laughter. “Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor.”

Obama supports extending the assault weapons ban, limits on gun sales, and a national law against carrying concealed weapons, with exceptions for retired police and military personnel. John McCain – whose legislative record was awarded a C+ rating by the NRA in 2004, but has received a perfect score – will address the group later Friday afternoon.

Huckabee is an ignorant yokel, a dangerous one. But of even more concern are his millions of fanatic fundamentalist mindless supporters, the same folks who are willingly hoodwinked by Hagee, Hinn, etc.

It just made no sense what he said. It makes me think that all you gotta do in front of a Republican audience is string the words "Obama" and "gun" together, imply death, and you will get laughs or applause. Let's leave aside the unconscious violence, it just made no sense. But oh well. It also shows how desperate certain Republicans are to be uttering such non sequiturs.

He'll make the perfect running mate for McCain. BTW, I'm a perpetual advocate of leftists learning to use firearms. Guns are fun, if used responsibly. And, if the RW whackjobs are the only ones with them that provides the basis for an ill-conceived sense of superiority over us (which in a very narrow sense is accurate). However, the most bellicose RWers are fundamentally cowards, so even a small percentage of NRA stickers next to an Obama sticker would have a serious psychological effect on enemies of our republic.

...with the "responsible gun owning individual" that knows "what is right and what is wrong" and is LESS likely to commit a crime with that gun. Right? I know I heard that correctly. He then spouts off a "joke" about someone aiming a gun at Obama in an obviously irresponsible and very criminal act. I swear, the hypocrisy of republicans know no bounds!! The fact that so many people buy into this crap is frightening.

Huckabee says that people who love America want less government. And yet the gun toting miliatry is the BIGGEST portion of our government's budget.

The media should be condemning Huckabee for his "joke" that is not a "joke".

Oh thats right, we don't have an easily accesible Independent media...What we have is a MSM media that is representative of all that hurtful and harmful. And they sure love Huckabee.

here's what i wrote:
How dare you call yourself a Christian!!! You should publicly apologize and prostrate yourself (selves for the rest of you ilk) to the American public. You need to make amends for your comments to the NRA on Friday night! You sick piece of detritus!

Neither God, nor Jesus, nor any religious figure you portend to believe in would condone your violent comments toward Barak Obama.

I rarely sit in judgment of another fellow being, but your comments the other night have strained my good will and patience beyond control.

YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED! Do us all a favor and remove yourself from the public spotlight so we don’t have to think of you or look at you ever again!

How would YOU feel if you were on the receiving end of that “joke”/threat? Hmmmm?

After this nobody is going to ever take you seriously.

Those little asides, the jokes we make, the off-the-cuff zingers, the elbow nudgers, especially the quick ones. Those things flip out from our mainframe attitudes.

We suspected Huckabee was a race-baiting, god-peddling, sniggering standard-bearer for the worst in American society. Now we know it to be true.

Evangelical Christianity anyone? It's on sale.

Last night I heard a lot of condemnation of the NRA for laughing at this. I didn't hear it. Apparently they didn't think it was funny either.
What I wanna know is, what did ole Huck think would be an appropriate response to having a gun aimed at you? Surveys show that most who have survived having a gun aimed at them agree that hitting the floor at the earliest possible convenience is a damn good idea. Did ole Huck think there weren't any military vets in that crowd of NRA members?

That was not a joke, that Huckabee spouted off with, it was a threat!!! Do you really think, that the re-pugs, will willingly surrender their power, after the election??? If the re-pugs loose??? The re-pugs, have been going to extreme lengths to insure a re-pug victory!!! The re-pugs just kicked me out of the Missouri governors race, because I'm a convicted felon, how long, before they forbid convicted felons the right to vote??? that's what, about 20% of the population!!! Now their attack on the NUNS!!! The re-pugs, have been BLUNTLY attacking the constitution, since THEY, ASSASSINATED J.F.K., no they are not beyond shooting anyone, especially Obama!!! Because, it would create another civil war (Rodney King, times 10,000) especially if Obama, had an Hispanic running mate, and the hired hit man was white, as with M.L.K.!!! Hasn't America learned yet that GOP, is politically correct for NAZI??? We have given our nation to the beast of division!!! Only UNITY, and enlightenment, can slay this BEAST!!! AMERICA, GOT BUSHWACKED!!! Don't count, on an election in November, if Mc-cain, gets behind in the poles!!! For he will have no problem shooting his brother ABLE!!! AGAIN AND AGAIN!!!

Gosh, let's test the theory that there's a double standard here; we know that Obama got scorched because of Rev. Wright, and that McBush has paid exactly no backlash for his nutcase-cum-men-of-God supporters. OK, anecdotal indication of some difference in treatement---based on race?

Now Huckabee, post red-neck West Virginia and Daisy-Mae-cum-Hillary's race-baiting campaign, and Hokey Huckabee jokes about ..... about.... about assasination!?!?!?!

I'm waiting for the media rush to the hysteria that they fulminated agaist Rev. Wright.

I'm........still......waiting.

NEVER suffer fools lightly or at all

While this fool, Muckabee is a lifeform which I would NEVER allow on my property, I am disgusted with Onbama's disingenuous pandering to the bleeding hearts who STILL believe that a gun causes crime, etc.
The following quote is why I will NEVER vote for Obama:

"Obama supports extending the assault weapons ban, limits on gun sales, and a national law against carrying concealed weapons, with exceptions for retired police and military personnel."

I am a resposible person, a business/home owner and NOT a bully.
I am not a coward either.
I am not afraid to protect myself nor am I ignorant of the need to be ABLE to do so.
I am not hysterical such as seeing a threat behind every tree.
However, I AM intelligent and sufficiently aware of the sorts of people walking around who actually do pose a threat to people like myself.
I'm 69 and have quite a few possessions which the lowlife types would pilfer if they could.

I DEMAND that I be able to retain my constitutional right to protect myself and will not give it up.

Now, for those of you who are hysterical and eat spin, I see that you need to be educated about what is an "assault weapon".
This is purely a political term as, an assault weapon is ANYTHING which can be used to assault someone.
Now, I am not going to start the drivel of saying to ban hammers and rocks, etc.
That is nonsense.
What is ALSO nonsense is to believe that we need more "gun laws".
If you actually took the time to read all the gun laws, you will see that there are so many of them that they do repeat themselves.

Who among you has ben so conned into believing that more gun laws will keep anything from the hands of criminals?
Have you really bought into that?

Those of us who are the real people who are responsible gun owners are no threat to you at all.
And, we are the ones who would be deprived of our reasonable legal and moral right to possess our guns.
If you were able to think clearly about this, it is actually us who are a MAJOR reason why your neighborhoods are reasonable safe.

As for the police keeping you safe, when do they show up?
Yes, they show up AFTER a crime has ALREADY been committed.
To believe that they prevent crime is to buy into the swamp and bridge adage.
The police cannot possibly be somewhere BEFORE a crime is committed in order to stop it.
There would have to be one in front of every home and, it simply does not work that way.

So, instead of being hysterically afraid of us, your good neighbors who have the means, be glad that we are here.
This does NOT mean that we sit in our homes with a gun in our hand.
In reality, it means that WE are a threat to the criminal and, NOT a threat to you unless you ARE that criminal.

This was beyond stupid or tasteless it showed a deep seeded underside of ignorance racism and casual violence towards blacks and outsiders in the south as tradition and shared culture..

Nothing has really changed in the deep south and Huckabee shows this same as George Allen did with his MACACA moment..

The thing that was even worse for me was to see that ignorant thug goon Tim Russert featuring this ass-hole Huckabee on Meet The Press, Sunday after Huckabee showed everyone what an idiot moron and racist is he is and Tim Russert was calling him "Mr. Vice President" repeatedly as McCain would be asking Huckabee to be his running mate for sure..

I wish people would wake up to how racist and ignorant Tim Russert is this isn't the first time I seen him show how blatantly ignorant and racist he is just a big stupid thug goon..same goes for O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Hannity, why would Russert even have this idiot on his show after this stupid disgraceful stunt let alone be calling him, Mr. Vice President..?

Since when is a joke about assassination funny - ever?
Posted by: Quannah on May 19, 2008 8:17 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
But especially in this situation. How many of you remember a story here at AlterNet a while back where the Secret Service were pulled off Obama's detail an hour before he spoke in Dallas - just opening the doors for any lunatic to waltz in? That story got buried fast. And the reason he had Secret Service protection before any other candidate (except the former first lady) was because of death threats. How could this possibly be funny to anybody?

And why is it Republics just don't seem to even have a sense of humor? Every "joke" I hear them tell is tasteless, not funny, or insulting to someone they don't like. I mean, really. At least Reagan used to be somewhat humorous... for a Republic, anyway.

But this new breed of Republic is the worst. Think of some of the "jokes" Bush has told over the past few years... looking for WMDs under the chairs and saying "they must be here somewhere." I mean, gimmeafuckingbreakalready.

Maybe, someday in the future, they can all get a humor transplant. Oy Vey.
