Posted by Huffington Post, Huffington Post at 7:00 AM on May 16, 2008.

McCain was for talking to Hamas before he was against it.

Gook: John McCain's Racism and Why It Matters
Jason Barnett The Uptake

Two years ago, in an interview with James Rubin for Sky News, Sen. John McCain expressed a willingness to negotiate with the terrorist group Hamas -- the very group that McCain has been relentlessly using to smear Sen. Barack Obama over the last several weeks.

Rubin has written an op-ed in Friday's Washington Post about his exchange with McCain, and The Huffington Post has obtained exclusive video. Here's the key excerpt:

RUBIN: "Do you think that American diplomats should be operating the way they have in the past, working with the Palestinian government if Hamas is now in charge?"

McCAIN: "They're the government; sooner or later we are going to have to deal with them, one way or another, and I understand why this administration and previous administrations had such antipathy towards Hamas because of their dedication to violence and the things that they not only espouse but practice, so . . . but it's a new reality in the Middle East. I think the lesson is people want security and a decent life and decent future, that they want democracy. Fatah was not giving them that."

As Rubin adds:

Given that exchange, the new John McCain might say that Hamas should be rooting for the old John McCain to win the presidential election. The old John McCain, it appears, was ready to do business with a Hamas-led government, while both Clinton and Obama have said that Hamas must change its policies toward Israel and terrorism before it can have diplomatic relations with the United States.

Even if McCain had not favored doing business with Hamas two years ago, he had no business smearing Barack Obama. But given his stated position then, it is either the height of hypocrisy or a case of political amnesia for McCain to inject Hamas into the American election.

UPDATE: The McCain camp has released the following response:

"There should be no confusion, John McCain has always believed that serious engagement would require mandatory conditions and Hamas must change itself fundamentally - renounce violence, abandon its goal of eradicating Israel and accept a two state solution. John McCain's position is clear and has always been clear, the President of the United States should not unconditionally meet with leaders of Iran, Hamas or Hezbollah. Barack Obama has made his position equally clear, and has pledged to meet unconditionally with Iran's leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the leaders of other rogue regimes, which shows incredibly dangerous and weak judgment."

I think McCain is already showing the early onset of Alzheimer's, with all this so called flip flopping he just doesn't remember what he's saying
and already said..

That speech yesterday was is was clearly delusional, 20 new nuclear plants by 2013 is he crazy do you know what it takes to build even one and how long they're not exactly condos..or strip malls..we don't even have the concrete these days to build 20 Nuclear plants or the steel manufacturing ability required we had to use steel from The WTC to finish our last latest design destroyer or cruiser..it's got to be Alzheimer's..

It must be all that Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Cindy serves him..!

If more Americans watched the world news, we'd be so much better off than if we engaged in these constant belly button gazing exercises. Alternet, sadly, has decided to follow the typical U.S. corporate program of cutting off world news.

PSYOPS experts would tell you that is what dictatorial governments do when they want to control the news that the domestic population is getting - as in Burma, where outside Internet access is usually banned.

Look outside! Really! Don't allow the U.S. corporate press, left right or center, to control your sensory input!

In particular look at the Egypt brokers Hamas - Israel deal story. I didn't know about that - did anyone else here?

I don't agree with 99% of McCain's policies, but this whole argument is leaving out a key component that needs to be included.

First, McCain's statement in referring to what U.S. diplomats should do with a Hamas led Palestinian governmnet reads: "sooner or later we will have to deal with them."
This is the epitome of ambiguous political talk. We can infer whatever we want from this little snippet based on our political leanings.

But in a later interview that same day in 2006 with CNN McCain says, "that it is important that Hamas renounce their commitment to eliminating the state of Israel."

I'm all for Obama, but let's not start fights with insufficient evidence.

And of course the bigger picture here is that none of this really matters! Why? Because it's clear that Israel is a terrorist state and we are one of their best allies, supplying them with all kinds of cool tanks, guns and bombs.

HuffPo and Alternet screw this up, like McCain and Obama

Can we get this story without Hamas being called "the terrorist group"? Hamas is a political party democratically elected to lead the Palestinians. If these media insist on calling Hamas "the terrorist group", then they should call Israel "the Imperialist state" or "the apartheid state". (Not that I think these ridiculous labels are helpful.)

HuffPo and Alternet get a little caught up in the sensation of pouncing on the right, and miss the real story.

Is the hyper sensitivity to politician statements as important as the need for negotiation in Israel and Palestine? Stop clocking every fidget and voice quiver of these politicians.
