The Return of the Toe-Tapping, Vet-Bashing Larry Craig

Larry Craig is baaack... According to Sam Stein at HuffPo, the so-called "Family Values" Senator from Idaho is out of the men's room stall and back in the national spotlight. Craig, who gained notoriety last year for allegedly soliciting sex in a Minneapolis airport bathroom, announced plans to amend the Iraq war supplemental bill currently before Congress in order to remove Jim Webb's GI Bill for the 21st Century.

Though Webb's bill has gained immense bi-partisan support in the Senate (it now has 57 co-sponsors from across the aisle, with 60 being the target number to ensure safe passage), it still faces stiff opposition in both House and Senate. Last week, the Blue Dogs delayed the GI Bill's passage, claiming that Democratic leaders needed to offset its costs, even though these fiscally conservative Democrats have favored Bush's supplementals for years.

Of course, John McCain has been the biggest hypocrite of all on Webb's bill. McCain and his crony Lindsey Graham have refused to co-sponsor Webb's bill, claiming it would cause the retention rate in the military to drop. Of course, a recent report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) concluded just the opposite. But that hasn't stopped McCain, whose adviser actually misquoted the CBO report yesterday on FOX News.

What Craig, McCain, and Graham want is a pathetic update of the antiquated GI Bill currently in existence. Their version would force vets to serve 12 years before earning the maximum $2,000 a month in benefits. Still, the funniest part of all of this is that because Craig has become an outspoken critic of the GI Bill, McCain has inadvertently aligned himself with the much maligned Republican Senator. Wonder if Dems will use this to sink McCain's alternate GI Bill.

McCain-Craig, aka, John and Larry. Now that's a pair that can lead the Republican Party into the future. I can see Limbaugh, Hannity, etal singing the praises of this dynamic duo. Of course, our shat-upon military will continue to be shafted but what does that matter in the scheme of things? There's plenty more where they came from and if all else fails we can pay a little extra and have all our military needs taken care of by the Blackwater bunch. Doncha just luv today's America?

One possible hangup: Craig wants some authentic airport bathroom stalls put into both the White House and the VP residence. He wants to be able to practice his taps and wide stance. McCain thinks it might be okay as long as he didn't have to simultaneously use those facilities with Larry. Beltway pundits thinks the "boys" will be able to work this our.

I know this isn't what this post is specifically about, but I'd just like to point out that the conservative movement is absolutely obsessed with male homosexuality

You just have to love the way these phony bastards SUPPORT the TROOPS . It is always amazing to hear them talk about fiscal reponsibility whenever there is something THEY don't want to happen .
You never hear them talk about fiscal responsibilty on any part of the spending on the war most of which is off budget and handled through Emergency supplementals . Yes it's SUCH a SURPRISE each and every year that they couldn't possibly budget for it . While they are talking about being fiscally responsible maybe they might recall that we have NEVER BEFORE cut taxes during a WAR . WWII had a top marginal rate of 90%+ and EVERYONE made sacrifices thanks to things like rationing . Today the wealthy deem 35% too high a price and sacrifice NOTHING . The wars most ardent supporters never recommend that their sons and daughters enlist and when asked reply just like VP Cheney that afterall it's a volunter army .

These chickenhawks should be dropped in the middle of the frontlines in Iraq or Afghanistan without a weapon.
18 suicides/day, 1000 attempted suicides/month, 300,000 new cases of PTSD and other mental illness, 320,000 cases of TBI(traumatic brain injury). No new GI Bill, improper scoring by inept VA employees, F$$K THEM!

Since the Republicans want to take away the GIs' Playboy and Penthouse magazines, maybe we can send Larry Craig and Bob Allen to Iraq to boost the guys' morale. I'm sure they'll return convinced that the surge is working.

How in the world they can claim to "support the troops" and then not actually do squat to take care of them?

The US government and military should be ashamed.

Seems to me their definition of supporting the troops is to keep the war going forever. I guess they think the troops are bored with nothing to do so they are supporting them by giving them something to do!

The pit bull branch of "democrats" are a bunch of fakes. Two-faced phonies. Anything that is FOR THE TROOPS OR LOW INCOME has to be PAID for by cutting something else, EXCEPT THE WAR which is NOT FUNDED OR PAID FOR AT ALL. All those billions of $ for the war, soon to be trillions ARE OFF THE BOOKS. Not ONE PENNY of those billions are in the BUDGET. All those billions that go to Halliburton, KBR, and Blackwater thugs are OFF THE BOOKS. We pay for cold blooded murderers, for KBRs poisoned water, for a $750MILLION mansion for our "visiting" congressmen to stay in while they are in Iraq, and for the thugs to enjoy when they are off duty. We pay for Rapists to get off scott free. Disgusting was left in the dust a long time ago. It's an ABOMINATION.

Vet Bashing? Why the hyperbole?

Half of what can't stand about the chatter that comes from the right is the shrill tone. The over-exaggerated attacks every time they don't like somebody/ something.

It annoys me to no end when people I agree with pull the same crap.
Thats why I can scarcely listen to Air America.

Look, the actions of Craig and McCain on this are wrongheaded and hypocritical. Why do we have to make a dubious (and debatable) claim that they are "Vet Bashers" when the truth, told plainly is damning enough?

Didn't do squat? Didn't your hear Granny? Bush gave up golf as a sign of support. You're probably feeling a little foolish right now, huh.
