Beverly Hills Chihuahua?

Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez writes:

First, before you read any further, go watch the trailer for Disney's movie, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Then, come back so we can talk about it.

You like that? Hmmm?

At a time when writers and producers of material about human Latinos face unprecedented resistance to our material, Hollywood had absolutely no problem green-lighting "Beverly Hills Chihuahua." It will be released in September, which is (coincidentally? methinks not) Hispanic History Month in the United States. Note: The brown male dog hooks up with the whitest female dog ever, and asks, slyly, "Jealous?" Also note, he is "50 percent warrior, 50 percent lover."

Nah, no stereotypes there.

At a time when new information about the incredible complexity of ancient Mayan civilization, writing, language and mathematics is being uncovered, at a time of unprecedented attacks upon those of Mexican descent in this country, at a time when history books are finally starting to admit that many tens of millions more indigenous people were killed in the Americas than previously admitted - this, THIS is what we get from our film industry.

A film industry with a long history of very cozy relationships with government propagandists.

If I hadn't sat in so many meetings where studio execs made comments that would make Jim Crow laws seem enlightened, I wouldn't believe it. But believe it I do. George Lopez and Salma Hayek on board to voice the characters.

Thoughts?

How is that any different from Alternet's video coverage?

Why not post some video of some U.S.-backed Iraqi troops beating the shit out of an old man on the street, like RaedintheMiddle did?

http://raedinthemiddle.blogspot.com/

Maybe that would offend the viewers - or rather, maybe it would offend your sponsors at Pew Charitable Trusts?

For the list of Alternet-acceptable topics, please visit http://www.pewtrusts.org/

Not bad - better than Heritage Foundation, sure - but really, who are we kidding here? Pew does not make its list of donors and funders available to the public - call and ask why:

We would welcome the opportunity to talk with you about becoming a partner. Please contact Susan Aheron Magill, our managing director for Donor Relations, at 202.552.2129 or smagill@pewtrusts.org.

I thought it was cute and as one of the whitest people in the room, I think it is nice a cute brown guy would be interested in a white chick.

I lived with a man who kept trying to get me to tan myself to an acceptably brown color. So I ask, What is WRONG with being white?!

Sure, I am as angry at Disney as any other self respecting lefty, but this promo looked like fun and made me think it might even be a movie my kids would actually want to see.

Maybe even with me - the whitest chihuahua in the room.

This is effectively giving a caricature of Mexican people to children, chalked full of stereotypes.

The issue of the "jealous?" comment in reference to the white dog is not a non-issue. There is an entire cosmetic industry in places like India and across the west to make darker skinned people want to be "white." For young kids who have darker skin it starts their inevitable journey into a life of insecurity about their beauty.

The child's mind is like play-doh and when Pocahontas' people are primitive and need civilizing and when no princess is ever black, or when the only Mexican characters white suburban kids, who wil flock to this movie, get to see are ridiculous stereotypes...its not conducive to the sort of healthy development we need for kids in a pluralistic, multi-ethnic society.

The strongest foundations of racist and prejudiced thought must always be the most subtle.

. . . usually give Hollywood-pap the benefit of the doubt (in that I know its going to be asinine and borderline offensive) but that was ridiculous.

Yes, stereo types. Yes I do agree with that but also what is totally outrageous is that someone at Disney said,"this is a Great story! Let's give it the green light!" OK Hollywood already has the rep of making really bad, bad commercially made films and especially "family" films. Come on it's offensive that Hollywood spent millions of dollars
on this film that seems it's going to be a bad idea that is what gets me the most. Come on Hollywood, use your heads out there. You are become out of touch again. Disney, remember Song Of The South? This is the same thing but with dogs. Morons!

O.M.G. What in THE WORLD was Disney thinking? And I had hoped the studio had learned its lesson long ago (it's not the first time they've done this sort of thing ...).

I was so disgusted I couldn't even watch all of the clip. I would love to put down here, what my Dominican nephew-in-law had to say about this, but it isn't printable.

'Song of the South' was the awful racial stereotype and insult that my generation had to grow up with, and I won't even name the SLEW of other ethnic and racial put-downs couched as children's entertainment Disney has put out over the years. But I have to say, this one takes the cake - THIS is just as offensive to me as 'Song of the South', and for the very same reasons.

If that clip is indicative of what the movie contains, I can state with complete certainty that I am confirmed in my decision to NEVER allow my children to view another Disney product, or to personally watch a Disney-owned product at the theater or on TV again.

Latinos are just the latest population group to be demonized and stereotyped at every turn in this country, and Disney is once again (perhaps unwittingly) contributing to the desensitization of the general (white) public to this stereotyping and promoting the devaluation of yet another culture's history and heritage, by putting out such images in the name of entertainment.

Obviously, nothing has been learned from past experience, and nothing has changed. How sad.

Scene: a Disney Boardroom...
"Look. It's very easy. We just take the same movie plot and plug it into a different character base. All that needs to be done is come up with our protagonists, so we can start the marketing campaign."
"Well let's do cars then. Ooo. Been done. Uh...how about insects? Uh...crap. Well, what about dogs?"
"We have a ton of animated dog films already."
"Yeah, but we could make this one about a particular breed. That way we can already start breeding in our secret puppy mills to be ready and flood the market when the movie comes out. I mean, look what we did for Dalmatians!"
"Bob is right. Everybody loves Latinos, so we'll make them Chihuahuas, give 'em bad accents, some maracas and machismo, and nobody will notice we just released the twentieth version of Lady and the Tramp! Genius!"

Yes this trailer has bad stereotypes. Most Disney films do. I don't know the measurable psychological effect they have, as I grew up watching them and certainly don't subscribe to racist views. However, I would rather be dragged across a field of rabid cactus than watch this tripe.

I've hated Disney since I was a girl, as their stories either seemed extremely stupid and boring or extremely heart-wrenching, if not emotionally disturbing. When raising my daughter I avoided Disney while other parents were shoving EVERYTHING Disney down their children's throats. I just never understood the attraction.
