Did Obama "Take on Fox?"

The Fox News Sunday interview is over. And Obama didn't take on Fox at all in any meaningful sense.

On Friday, a senior Obama adviser responded to criticism of his decision to go on Fox with a bunch of tough talk, saying that Obama knew full well that Fox has been at the forefront of spreading "the most specious of rumors" (i.e., lies) about Obama and vowing that he would "take Fox on."

Well, it didn't happen. Obama definitely pushed back hard on some of Chris Wallace's questions, but at no point did he draw attention to Fox's spreading of lies about him or critique the network in a general sense.

Obama had a perfect opening to do this, too. Wallace pressed him repeatedly about Jeremiah Wright and the bogus "flag pin" nonsense -- a perfect set-up for Obama to point out that Fox had obsessed about both these issues to an obscene degree and that Fox had been at the forefront of spreading the Obama-is-a-Muslim lies.

To be clear, Obama wasn't obliged to go after Fox. But a senior adviser said Obama would, as a way of quieting criticism of him. And he didn't.

This will likely further dismay liberal bloggers who had worked very hard to get Dems to boycott Fox as a way of deligitimizing the network and who already criticized Obama for agreeing to appear in the first place.

Obama turned in a perfectly solid performance. He probably succeeded in making a positive impression on many voters he might otherwise not have reached. But the broadcast was clearly a big victory for Fox and Chris Wallace, too.

Indeed, at the very end of the interview, Wallace told Obama to not "be a stranger." Obama's response:

"I won't."

Late Update: Matt Stoller has some strong criticism of Obama's appearance.

Late Late Update: Several of you are arguing that there was something ambiguous about what the senior Obama adviser said on Friday. Here's what the adviser said:

"He is going on their Sunday show to take Fox on..."

Keep in mind that this adviser said this specifically to mollify critics who worried that Obama's decision to appear on Fox would help legitimize the network and hence hurt Dems overall. There's no ambiguity here to speak of: The adviser was telling these critics not to worry, that the reason Obama was going on was to "take Fox on."

And this just didn't happen in any meaningful sense. When Wallace brought up Wright and the flag-pin, for instance, Obama didn't point out that these bogus stories have been pushed relentlessly by Fox or that the network has pushed the Obama-is-a-Muslim lies. Again: Obama was not obliged to take on the network. But either way, the bottom line is that he didn't do it. Partly because of this, the interview -- which was a solid performance by Obama -- was also a victory for Fox.

I was watching MSNBC after Rev. Wright was interviewed by Bill Moyers. Rev. Wright said regarding Barack, "he is a politcian."

Three of the four talking heads wanted to 'read' something into Wright's comments, implying they must be meant in a derogartory manner, couldn't just be stating a fact, Obama is a politician, and yes so are all three candidates running for office and/or anyone that ever hopes to be president or run for public office.

The fourth kept saying "no way" what on earth are you talking about! So Wright called Obama a politician! So what???

Does Obama need to talk about FAUX or 'taking on Fox' nine days away from the Illinois and NC primaries? is that really the best use of his time? If he did what you THINK he should have done, gone to the mat, or what you think his advisors meant to imply, gone full tilt against Chris Wallace and FAUX, THAT would have dominated the conversations, news and 'debates' for the next two weeks. Not issues, not McPAIN, not winning in November. Sure as shit, much as the focus shifted to the media itself after lampooned on Sat. Night Live, the conversations would have, once again, become about the media itself.

Barack's 'attitude', comments and even body language would have been the only topic of conversation, if he scratched his nose in the wrong manner it would have been open for even more interpretation, probably lasting into the fall election, and FAUX would have really REALLY won by becoming the center of attention, very likely offering Hellary and McPAIN more fodder along the way.

"taking Fox on" is open to interpretations. I am glad he remained, as always, classy and on message, sounds like winning to me. FAUX will go out with a whimper not a bang. Much to FAUX's dismay the times they are a changin, FAUX's days are numbered. I am glad Barack didn't give them one ounce of ammunition to use against him.

BARACK THE VOTE!

The Clintons, that is ENORMOUS. Barack is 'taking on' the dem 'elites' or 'elders' and their party as they know it, no small task and long overdue. He is also 'taking on' the republican party. He is taking on the media as a whole. No small task dancing through the landmines laid out for him (ie mistatements at a fundraiser in San Fran compared to outright lies about sniper fire) and he continues to rise above. He is one of the classiest politicians I have ever seen, heads and tails above The Clintons and GWB. The Oval Office has been missing someone like Barack Obama for a long time.

Audacity and what it means

A little off topic, but some what falls in line with how to define Reverend Wright. Just finished the book by Obama called “Audacity of Hope”. So I needed to look up audacity. Because Obama takes the title from his Reverend Wright, here his Reverend offers the title to his book. Audacity of Hope.

Audacity means Boldness, intrepidity, confidence, daring originality 1859 Boldness combined with recklessness, venture sameness 1531, open disregard of decorum or morality, effrontery, shamelessness, unblushing insolence.

Audacity of Hope, or one can say, Shamelessness of hope, or one can say open disregard of morality of hope, or one can say boldness combined with recklessness of hope.

Sorry but this is very questionable and very confusing from a man who teaches at the University of Chicago with a degree from Harvard. So I will be some what unblushing and insolent to say they, Obama, and Reverend Wright sound like a couple of creeps. That’s putting it mildly. Now as one watch Reverend Wright talk about equality, but wildly goes on some song and rant from Mozart to wrap Africans are different. And a shout is different, and change is going to come about. Many will just change the channel.

My point is Audacity of Hope is an oxymoron…confusion beyond conception… especially when one looks how you can have disregard of morality while trying to Hope, here; hope believes that a better or positive outcome is possible even when there is some evidence to the contrary. But to have disregard of morality diminishes the hope. This title “Audacity of Hope” descends rather then ascends.

He did a great job. The way that he dealt with the sad, typical GOP frames that were thrown at him was beautiful. He did not fall into the trap of trying to defend himself within the frame that Wallace had laid out. He confidently avoided it and confronted the topic on his own terms.

This is part of the reason why I think he is so talented. Even though the Republicans have been using those tactics for years now, It seems that most Democrats have failed to adapt to, and overcome it.

I've been so tired of seeing Democrats fall for this trick over and over. I've been waiting for someone like him! He didn't lose his cool. He took Wallace's remarks and coolly, respectfully responded in a manner that made them look insignificant and unimportant.

He was the one in control of that interview.

The two previous positive blogs about Senator Obama are superb. Senator Obama is running for President against ex-President Clinton who spends his own money for campaigning, Senator Clinton, Senator McCain, and a huge base of special interests. That he is still leading the race and is maintaining a greater sense of dignity and presence is a great plus. FOX news is what FOX news will be: bias, superficial, and irrelevant. Congratulations Senator Obama on a classy presence--very presidential.

I almost decided not to watch the video clip, based on the article and the disappointment expressed by the author. But after reading bloggers' comments about Obama's classy responses I watched it, and I agree that Obama handled the questions in an excellent manner, focusing on the points he believes are important while not giving credence to trivial points. He is focused on serving the country and would represent the Democratic party better than the neocon and corporatist alternatives.

Three cheers for Obama. Why would he confirm to the Fox audience what Fox has been implying all these months? Obama was pure class and showed an audience saturated with spin & propaganda the metal he’s made of. We don’t need a vindictive man airing his dirty laundry on national TV. What he did and the way he acted went a long way in showing everyone the kind of person he is.

I just viewed the clip and was impressed and relieved at what I saw. Senator Obama has CLASS, as several have pointed out. Not middle, upper or lower class, just first class character and intelligence.

Those who are urging him to leap into the mire and mud wrestle with Clinton - or McCain - or Fox News - are misguided. Obama's strength is that he maintains a decent, thoughtful and focused presence midst the flying brickbats. And by the way, he did get in a pointed - and legitimate - criticism of McCain, when the interviewer brought up the subject of fiscal irresponsibility. Obama made it very clear who the wild spender actually was - and calmly noted McCain's switch of position to support the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.

To those who say Obama should not have gone on FOX - that is a misguided view. By acquitting himself so well, he was a fine counter to their unbalanced coverage, and spoke to many who would not otherwise have seen what a quality candidate he really is, and heard his side of the story. Not talking to those who disagree with you doesn't heal division or win anyone over. Speaking to them sometimes can result in some positive movement.

With all due respect J'46, on a couple of levels a lot off topic which is cool with me, if you need to do it that way in order to get it done. However, after reading the first line of your first paragraph and the first line of your last paragraph several times I am left wondering if you finished reading the book or finished reading the title of the book.

Why is it necessary for you to define Dr. Wright? And after defining him what do you then do with this defined gentleman? In what category might you place him so as to keep the free world safe from this, in your mild words, creepy PhD. and his equally creepy Harvard trained JD disciple.

J'46, might not the real source of your admitted confusion be rooted in the departure from your pre-conceived definition of Black men by these two overachieving men of color? Could it be that their escaping, by such a wide margin, the steriotypical categorizing your defining mechanisms offer you is bothering you much more than the root and fruit of a word. Is not the reality of colored guys daring to arrogate unto themselves the audacity to be audacious and hopeful what is really unsettling to you?

Contrary to the lies and devilish intent of the fear and war mongers, Dr. Wright and President Obama are America too. They want America to be the America that her creeds define her to be capable of being.

As to Dr. Wright's reference to Mozart and Rap it might be helpful to know that one of his Master Degrees is in Music.

I was introduced to Dr. Wright over 20 years ago. He is a prophet and teacher with lots of knowledge and love of humankind. I suggest you seek to learn from him. Success is more assured in receiving him as a teacher than in trying to define, marginalize or destroy him. He and President Obama have well established track records as Public Servants. Let 'em serve.

God knows we need all the good help we can get.

Me? I'm just trying to do a litle good in your neighborhood.

My Mission: Clear the Fear. Abate the Hate.

What a class act this guy is. This interview, which is so obviously intended by Fox to be their usual "gotcha" fare, does nothing less than inspire imaginings of Obama negotiating with the enemy on a hundred different levels. The lack of hysteria--of which I am 'WAY PAST TIRED!! in the current administrative cabal--is so refreshing and hopeful in itself. The decorum in his behaviour and his intellectual integrity are precious beyond words. Great job, Barack!

Sorry, but it's completely stupid to expect Obama to "take on" Fox in the manner suggested. Why would he antagonize them further? As it was, the talking heads had little negative to say about him on the panel afterwards, because he turned in such a good performance.

The fact is, he took FOX on simply by appearing on the show. He showed that he wasn't afraid to face the questions. He walked into the lion's den and came out not only alive and kicking, but also looking good.

There are many ways to address media issues. To expect a candidate to attack a network directly while on the campaign trail is...I repeat...stupid.

Obama is a smart man. He knows what Fox is all about. It's like a critical thinker whole believes
in Darwinism and evolution going into the Creation "Museum" in Kentucky. He or she will have a good laugh and have their beliefs not effected in anyway to think those people are making S#!T up
as they go along. Same with Fox Ente..."News". I believe Fox "news" does not have the same pull as they did in year 2000. I do hear though that in Fox's green room that they have really great snacks and drinks including a full service bar.

Obama's courteous and thoughtful remarks surely made more of an impression on viewers than if he had gotten into a catfight with a Fox talking head. It certainly was typical of him not to engage in that sort of self-defeating nonsense, and it is typical of him to demonstrate calm and good judgment.

Which indicates that we would have a head of state capable of dealing intelligently and effectively with other heads of state, rather than the ignorant embarrassment we've have had fronting for Cheney and the neocons for nearly eight long, catastrophic years. No wonder Bush doesn't care to negotiate; he can't.
