Apparently, the Ron Paul Revolution Is Being Televised

Fancy graphics and a nice critique of Empire.

Regular readers know that I disagree with a lot more of Ron Paul's views than I support. Actually, I find some of those views downright scary.

But when it comes to an accessible critique of American militarism, nobody else articulates the simple point that empire is incompatible with small R republicanism as well as the Texas rep.

The video to your right has been playing in Pennsylvania markets leading up to today's primary. It's a trippy, animated 60-second spot in which a Max Headroom-like (I'm dating myself, I know) Paul wanders back through American history to condemn today's hubristic foreign policy consensus.

For readers who are unable to view video clips online, there's a transcript after the jump ...

Ron Paul:

We now are a nation known to start war.

We feel compelled because of our insecurity, that we have to go over and attack these countries to maintain our empire.

We have over 700 bases -- we’re in 130 countries. And they’re talking about bombing Iran.

It is such a dramatic change from what is truly American, and truly Constitutional.

I don’t want to run the world!

The Constitution doesn’t give me the authority to run the world!

We ought to mind our own business is what we need to do!

With all this spending overseas wasting money!

This is a continuation of a revolution. It is a peaceful revolution. It’s up to you to spread this message around this country.

This is an American cause, it’s the cause of freedom.

There's something going on in this country, and it’s big!

Spread the message! Thank You!

Ron Paul is a little crazy - but he is honest.

I'd have a lot more respect for him if he wasn't such a slavish devotee to the economic mentality of Milton Friedman and the "privatize everything" agenda.

I always wanted to see a Dennis Kucinich - Ron Paul debate - maybe moderated by Stephen Colbert, yes? After not watching the nauseating ABC debates (one minute - then I decided to read the transcript later, and avoid any serious damage to my laptop screen), I'd love to see something like that. Real people speaking honestly, with Colbert to provide a nice caricature of the media - wow - what a notion.

. . . is Ron Paul running as a third party candidate? If not, why is this commercial running?

He never withdrew. Take a look--Ron Paul got over 125,000 votes in PA yesterday. That's 16%! You don't think this can stop McCain at the convention? How can he make the case that he can win in November when 16% of his party would sooner stay home than vote for him?

Abe Lincoln went to his convention with fewer than 10% of the delegates needed to win. Then he got the delegates to vote to free themselves from their candidate commitments. And he won on the 3rd ballot.

That's why it ran.

I like Ron Paul even that I disagree with a lot of his view. He really is speaking his part. By the way in the video, when does the meteor hit the Earth and when does Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson come in an save us? I hate this type of animation it's soulless and down right creepy. Just have Ron Paul in front of a live audience, he doesn't need special effects.
