ABC Blows It!

ABC News desperately wanted to provoke controversy in last night's Democratic debate. Why else would they have wasted half of the debate on inconsequential topics like Bosnia fire, Reverend Wright, and the "bitterness" of Pennsylvanians? Why else would George Stephanopoulos have taken the incendiary remarks of FOX's Sean Hannity regarding Weather Underground and try to pass them off as his own question? The FOXification of the mainstream media has just gone from bad to ludicrous. And if it was controversy ABC was clamoring for, it was certainly controversy they got.

As the boos became audible towards the end of ABC's coverage, Charlie Gibson threw up his hands playfully and said, "The crowd's turning on me. The crowd is turning on me." Well Charlie, I know we Philadelphians have the reputation for being unduly harsh—it's widely held that we once booed Santa Claus at an Eagles game, after all—but every single jeer you heard last night was more than justifiable.

If Pennsylvanians (and the rest of America, for that matter) are bitter about anything, it's that ABC squandered a golden opportunity to allow two Presidential hopefuls to discuss issues like the Iraq War Recession we're currently suffering. This was ABC's last chance to elevate discourse to a national level, but instead you focused on the mucky politics of irrelevance. As Will Bunch seethed in his Daily News blog, "There almost isn't enough space—and this is cyberspace, where room is unlimited—to list all the things you could have asked about but did not."

So what to do now? Let's create an alternative solution! In the comment section, write us the questions you think ABC should've asked Senators Clinton and Obama last night. Play moderator for a minute... If there is one question you would like our Democratic candidates to answer, one issue they should address, what would it be? We'll compile the answers and make sure your voices are heard.

And don't forget to sign MoveOn's petition. It's time we let ABC know what we're truly bitter about!

Digg!

Action against ABC

I just sent these clowns an email notifying them that I am now boycotting their network, and what few shows they have that I do like to watch I now intend to pirate via the net so I don't have to give their sponsors a single second of my attention.

This is step 1.

Now, I am compiling a list of ABC sponsors.
I am going through the list and seeing who I can contact. I am sending them hand written letters as well as emails telling them why I will not buy their products and services anymore.

Step 2

I have also told them that ABC has pissed me off to such an extent I fully intend to spread the word and encourage friends and family to boycott their goods and services as well.

That's step 3.

Hit 'em where it hurts people, hit 'em where it hurts. They catch a few thousand nasty emails saying we're not going to buy their shit anymore because of the actions of their medium of advertisement, they'll start putting the thumbscrews to the idiots who run ABC.

I live in Canada where we can watch the ABC network through a Plattsburgh (Burlington? not sure...) affiliate.
Browsing through the ABC programming schedule, i've noticed that the 11PM news show is actually the local FOX News show (the same one shown on the FOX44 affiliate of the FAUX Network).
I was surprised to see this and wondered if it was a mistake. Is anybody aware of a merger of this kind between these 'news' outlets? i don't get my news from mainstream american networks but i was just wondering if anyone had an answer for this.

(Rebuttal) Senator, real Americans understand that a flag lapel pin is not an accessory that you choose like a tie, or a pair of socks. Patriotism is not a choice, patriotism begins at conception.

Time To Contact Steve Jobs
Posted by: NoPCZone on Apr 17, 2008 7:19 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The largest single shareholder in Apple is Steven Paul Jobs of Macintosh, iPod and iPhone fame. When he sold Pixar to Disney for over $7 billion, he took his share of the gravy in Disney stock. He holds more shares than even the Disney family.

The head of Disney is Robert Iger, who was installed after Michael Eisner was booted in part because Jobs withheld renewal of the Disney-Pixar distribution/marketing deal. Jobs publicly stated he would talk to any studio except an Eisner-led Disney. Shortly after, Eisner was gone and Iger was in charge. Eiger, in part, owes his position to Jobs.

Jobs is well known to be a liberal and a supporter of liberal causes. Meanwhile, ABC has brought us Rush Limbaugh, Hannity and the NeoCon friendly ABC Newz. Doesn't seem to fit.

Maybe it's time to crank up the heat on Mr. Jobs. Apple and Jobs both like positive PR and avoid controversy and bad PR. Crank up the heat on Jobs and the message will be sent. I'm sure Mr. Eiger will listen to him.

"Mexico City Doctrine" which forbids any health NGO receiving US assistance to mention birth control or abortion?

Will you terminate the hundreds of millions of US taxpayer dollars that go to "abstainance only" sex education, in light of the fact that recent studies indicate "abstainance only" sex education leaves our teens more at risk for unwanted pregnancies and STDs?

What criteria do you think are most important in choosing a Supreme Court justice or a federal judicial appointment?

What steps will you take in the first one hundred days of your administration to begin to address global warming?

What are the three most important measures a new president can take to strengthen the nation's middle class, and as a followup, the same question as applied to providing economic opportunities and equity to those presently caught in poverty?

How will you deal with the woeful inadequacy of the federal effort to aid in the reconstruction of those communities most devastated by Katrina?

What parts of the Patriot Act would you amend or repeal, if any?

I could go on and on...

Dear Presidential Candidate,

What do you think it means to America, on a gut level, that we have all these wonderful advances in science and technology, and yet millions of Americans are left out of many aspects of daily life because we aren't using those "scientific" advances to make America accessible to all citizens? What does it say that we have tremendous amounts of money and expertise to make all online video captioned or subtitled but we don't do it? How does it feel to live in a country where someone in a wheelchair often can't do something simple like roll down the sidewalk because it's all messed up and this country, with all its might and money, isn't doing anything about it? What kind of country is it that has plenty of power and resources to do such mind-numbingly simple and easy things to take care of its populace - but it does not?

It's so hard to believe the number of issues that were not addressed in the quote-unquote DEBATE. But here's my bid for a topic worthy of serious, in-depth, and honest discussion of the FACTS and ISSUES.

Nuclear Power!
–-Is it CLEAN?
--What is the real CARBON COST incurred from mining, processing, enriching, waste disposal, transport, etc., etc.?
--Who stands to gain from the government largess of subsidies and tax breaks?
--What are the costs to the taxpayer?
--What are the health risks of Nuclear Power?

I only touch the surface.

(2) Will your administration favor the North American Union? Why?

(3) Will your administration favor media consolidation? Why?

(4) How will your administration invest in maintaining and repairing America's aged infrastructure?

(5) How will your administration restore Medicare to an understandable asset for seniors?

(6) Will your administration favor abolishing the Federal Reserve(which is privately owned and neither Federal nor a reserve), and restoring the duty of issuing money to Congress(interest free), in order to avert recession/depression and to escape interest payments on the National Debt? Why not? How will your administration replenish America's treasury while paying down the National Debt?

(7) Will your administration favor America's citizens, or Corporate America?

You mean you seriously support the bombing of Iraq in 1990 despite a lack of diplomatic initiative to solve the Iraq/Kuwait conflict by George HW Bush? And the absolutely illegal and unjustified invasion of Panama? Does this mean that illegal and brutal military actions which kill civilians are OK, as long as we can win them?

Now that Obama is getting some of the crap Hillary has put up with, constantly, from the beginning from these debates, suddenly you're up in arms. Poor, little Obama can't handle criticism, or opposition; after all he just wants to be president, and negative criticism should properly be directed at Hillary, and not at him. All these debates have concentrated on trivia, and sensationalism, but last night's simply brought more of it to bear on the proceedings. What really was different about Last Night, was that it appeared to focus more attacks on Obama, so that they equalled the number that Hillary is accustomed to. That's the real difference. Yet, I can't get over the feeling that this debate was designed to help Obama, not hurt him, as it ostensibly seemed to do. By concentrating on trivia, it seemed to be treating Obama unfairly, and by concentrating on garbage, it really favored Obama, because Hillary is far better able to handle the substantive issues, which was abundantly clear last night.

Break up Corporate Monopolies.

Let's begin with the 6 Corporate Media Monopolies that control the National debate.

What chance do we have for the media to be the our watchdog when it's only interest is to suck as much cash as it can out of the population and keep us in the dark!

Corporate funding of both political parties keep the leash on whoever is elected, short.

There seems to be a huge disconnect between public opinion and the media's reflection of it.

Has corporate consolidation of wealth and power already gone too far to correct?

Well, what could anyone expect? Take a look at the two moderators. George Stephanopolis owes his entire very highly compensated career to the Clintons. How could anyone expect him of bias? I have no doubt he learned how to manage conflict-of-interest situations from his mentors, the Clintons. And then there is the super lightweight, flyweight actually, Charles Gibson, who learned his chops on the Good Morning America show. Gibson is a pompous idiot and a blowhard. Stephanopolis is sharp and knows this stuff inside and out. His blathering resulted for a reason. You can guess what it might be.

Personally, I thought the CNN-Wolf Blitzer debates were absurd-damn sure Wolfie, former PR guy for AIPAC, wasn't about to ask any questions of America's strategic relationships vis a vis Israel. Nor was he about to ask dozens of other pertinent questions. As bad as CNN was, ABC surpassed them by leaps and bounds.

Why should political debates be any different from newstainment? Do you think the American public wants to listen to a lot of policy shit? These are, at least 51.5% of them, the people who elected Bush to the Presidency after he obviously cheated and stole the election of 2000, the people who believed the Swift Boat ads, the people who were so afraid of terrorists they were quite willing to elect a man who had invaded the wrong country. With their money!

Substance! Goddam, that would be so boring. Much more fun would be rehashing what Obama meant by the word "bitter." Or whether Obama's minister loves America. And, of course, "loving" America has everything to do with wearing a goddam pin. George Bush never took his off, the same George Bush who made damn sure he didn't go to Vietnam for the war he fully supported for the country he loved. But a flag pin does separate the patriotic men from the boys, doesn't it?

I guess these flag pins mean so much to the insider Washington war hawks and their lackeys in the media like Limbaugh and Hannerty, Brooks and Goldberg, et al (the list is way too long to include all of the guilty), is because they don't have any medals from their military service. I realize Rush had hemorrhoids or some such thing-he hadn't become a dope fiend yet-and Cheney was busy doing "other things", likely dreaming up how to get his next deferment, and they must feel kind of inadequate, so they have come up with wearing the flag as well as wrapping themselves in it.

The politicos themselves, I am sure, would rather not get into a policy discussion and have little or no wiggle room on these issues if they are elected. Substantial debates can come back to haunt.

Let us not forget it was this echelon of the press, big time broadcast and print news organizations, that fully supported, if not colluded in, Bush's Folly. These are the same assholes that broadcast or published Administration handouts as hard news, the same assholes who never saw a "terrorist threat" story they didn't like, no matter how ridiculous or inconsequential it might really be. These same networks are the folks who decided that television news should be a profit making enterprise as opposed to the public service it had traditionally been, a kind of thank you for the use of public air waves for free. That is why we have a Katie Couric instead of a John Chancelor or a Charles Gibson instead of a Howard K. Smith.

Unlike beer, it could get a lot better than this, but I am afraid it won't. In fact, in all probability major network news will continue to degrade to the point of meaninglessness, which will be a good thing. Citizens who are aware and involved don't pay any attention to it now. All it does presently is poison that segment of the population that is less than enthusiastic about politics and current events. The sooner that ends, the better.

Duh – Let’s vote for the guy with the flag pin

Are Americans really that stupid?
John McCain apparently thinks so, with his disingenuous mispronunciation of the word “audacity,” as in “The Audacity of Hope,” Barack Obama’s uplifting best-seller.
Wonder if he can say Stephanoloplis – as in George, you know, the short guy who embarrassed himself and the viewing audience with the inanity of his questions in the Pennsylvania democratic debate.
(His co-moderator, the tall one, was Charles Gibson, and his questions were no better. A regular Laurel and Hardy, those two.)
Fifteen minutes into the debate – I think it was when Stephanopolis was asking why Obama wasn’t wearing a flag pin (neither was Hillary), I had become so incensed –I decided to e-mail ABC to object to the line of questioning.
To e-mail the company, I had to register. I had to make up a name of more than four letters (“Liz” has only three). I had to agree to a list of terms – God knows what they were, but I agreed. I had to verify that I was me. (By this time, Obama was explaining that he didn’t agree with whatever Louis Farrakhan had done when Obama was eight years old.)
Finally I got to the “send comments” section, but before I wrote my piece, I took a look at the list of more than 2,000 previous e-mail messages sent to ABC during the debate. Almost all of them said the same thing I wanted to – Stop this nonsense! Let the candidates talk about the issues.
My faith in the American people was restored. Sort of. Americans, at least those of us who can use the Internet, are not that stupid.
Then was a commercial break, and after that – an hour into the debate, the candidates were allowed to talk about things that mattered. Some of those issues anyway. There was a long list of substantial issues that they didn’t have time to touch on.
At the end, an ABC commentator said that the first part of the debate was very important, because it showed Obama had a lot of unresolved problems … and the audience booed. Gibson threw up his hands in mock defense, “We’re being attacked,” he squeaked.
I haven’t read anything about that in subsequent reports, but it was certainly a remarkable signoff.
Now the question is – are Americans smarter than the mainstream news outlets? John McCain, who just can’t pronounce “audacity” and keeps confusing Sunni and Shiites, is betting we are not.

Pride and Respect

Dear Senators Clinton and Obama:

What will you - and what can we the American people - do to foster genuine pride in ourselves and respect among other nations?

Right now "we" are a threat and an embarrassment to ourselves and to others. We are culturally vapid, politically shallow, crass, and dangerously ignorant, and "we" are also arrogant, greedy and weak at all the wrong times and in all the wrong places. You could start by recasting this description of "we", the U.S., but you've really got your work cut out for you. There have been too many bad decisions and bad actions. There is a decided lack of integrity from our corporations, politicians, and the media. And please remind us, sincerely, how you are different and whom else you know to be different - that is, exhibiting the integrity that will foster the kind of pride and respect we can believe in and follow. Thank you

What will President Clinton or Obama do about the U.S. Culture of torture begun by the Bush Administration, as reported by (would you believe it) ABC News?

To the Hon. Senators Obama and Clinton,

Do you believe the Unites States has the right to invade and bomb any country in the world if it is in the economic interest of the U.S. to do so? If you plan on continuing the bombing of Iraq, at what point will you stop?

would you support a single desk, non-profit health care plan for all?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm sorta surprised at the lack of questions this basic need is getting this election cycle!
It's like it doesn't really matter that grandma and grandpa need to sell all they own in order to pay for grandma's Alzheimer's treatment... or Mom's diabetic treatments is keeping the kids from receiving a quality education!
Congress should have my health insurance
Question I would pose:
As president, would you dare to refuse your automatic health plan, with your $0 deductible, and your choice of any doctor you want, and your full coverage for everything you need, and, instead, get coverage like the rest of us have to do? Would you dare ask Congress to join you and drop their plans and get their own, so they can see how they would be treated? If they had to suffer what we go through to get health care, maybe they would do something about it. How can you excpect these spoiled brats to do anything for us when they are guaranteed to be cared for no matter what?
