I wasn't fully aware of Phil Donahue back in the day when he was dominating daytime talk, but I vividly remember his short-lived show on MSNBC in 2002-03. As a college sophomore watching this country mindlessly head to war, Donahue was literally the only person I remember on mainstream television who consistently challenged the rationale for war. Night after night, he pleaded with Americans to pay attention and debate the disastrous course we were on. Here was a host unafraid to feature topics like the PATRIOT Act, the drug war, and Israel-Palestine, and provide a national platform for guests like Ralph Nader, Barbara Ehrenreich, and mothers of 9/11 victims who opposed war (any war) in their name. He'd run around his studio with a microphone, inviting his audience to engage in the discussion. I even remember at least one show where he was taking live calls in the studio, and I was so excited that someone on cable news was telling the truth that I did something I'd never done before and called (though I didn't make it on air).

And then on February 25, 2003, less than a month before the Iraq war began, Donahue - then the most watched show on MSNBC - was canceled. An internal memo at NBC spoke of executives' fears that Phil would be "a difficult public face for NBC in a time of war." The memo continued, "He seems to delight in presenting guests who are anti-war, anti-Bush and skeptical of the administration's motives," and went on to describe how the Donahue show could become "a home for the liberal antiwar agenda at the same time that our competitors are waving the flag at every opportunity."

Everyone knows what's happened in the world since Phil Donahue was booted out of our living rooms, but what about him? He made a brief cable news cameo in 2005 to belittle and embarrass Bill O'Reilly, and now he's back with a feature-length documentary on the war that Manila highlighted earlier this week. Good thing there are non-corporate media outlets like The Real News and Democracy Now! who aren't afraid to put Donahue back on-screen where he belongs.

(See this excerpt from Jeff Cohen’s book for a fascinating behind-the-scenes account of the challenges the Donahue show faced at MSNBC. Cohen was a senior producer of the show, and is the founder of Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting.)

"Win" to McCain and all the other dipshit repukes means winning their oil and keeping our military there to protect it. I HATE the repug assholes. yes, I HATE the idiotic people in this country, but I sure LOVE the good ones like Donahue.
And DON'T tell me we need to come together. Why should good people align with criminals, liars, haters, cheaters, and MORONS (I could go on and on). Assholes that don't care about killing innocent people and destroying the lives of our soldiers, for OIL, dipshits! OIL!
Donahue just reignited the fire under my ass.

I Like Phil, don't get me wrong but why is everyone focussed on the invaders, the U.S. military dead and injured?
And he's right, of course McCain will be the next president while the Dems destroy themselves from within and Nancy Pelosi is bought and paid for and has said "Impeachment is off the table".
Right.

I'd really like to know why Phil Donahue is asking McCain / Bu$hCo to stop what is NORMAL to them.

That's like politely asking a serial rapist or habitual paedophile to quit their habit, because other people - especially their innocent victims - don't like what they are doing. How stupid is that!

Donahue has done much for the rights of followers of al-Islam, persons of Arabic extraction, no, never say things of which you know not what you speak. You kids love GOOGLE, do a Chronology from '01 through now.

I remember too when Donahue was pulled off the air from MSNBC. What was worse was his replacement was some jock reporter from ESPN! How on earth could a news network pull Phil Donahue off the air and replace him with some dumb jock from sports center. I decided to watch the new idiot just to feed my anger. I quickly decided that MSNBC had seriosly screwed up in their choice of replacement! The dumb jock of course was Keith Olberman who has essentially the same message as Phil but without the baggage. In fact Keith's background gives that message a much wider audience. What I still don't understand is why not have both? It's not like the corporate media would be wildly out of balance to have two anti war voices to balance out all the "flag waving."

Actually, Bill Maher and a news reporter were both fired for saying similar things critical of Bush (and, of course all the experts were saying the same thing as were intelligence experts from around the globe. The U.N. was also skeptical concerning the so-called "findings.") Unfortunately, these went unreported in the mainstream press but could be found in virtually all foreign presses, such El Mundo, etc.

...that think that McInsane will not win, think again. Donahue knows that the fix is in and the Obama or Hellary will be fodder for another shame election process.

The Democraps either do not know how to run an election or are shills in the corporate fascist fix.

They will be "swift boated" adnausium and do not know how to frame the debate. The election will be about wedge issues like abortion, guns, gays, etc., and the dumb Amerikkkan people will bite again.

If you think you can beat a candidate with a little brains and could not beat the dumbest piece of shit ever conceived in 2000 and 2004, then I have some Bear-Sterns stock to sell you.
