The Real Rev. Wright: The Footage Fox and the Other Networks Won't Show [VIDEO]

I heard him build up a congregation hungry for knowledge, and inspiration, but I never heard him say the things Fox News found.

Fox News. You corrupt mouthpiece for a corrupt administration. I usually just ignore you and your leader Rupert Bush, but now you've gone too far. Several days ago you aired a clip of Jeremiah Wright - Barack Obama's former Spiritual Advisor. The clips you found were incendiary, hateful, and taken out of context...anti-American. I was shocked to hear such words coming from the mouth of a man whose sermons I had listened to for at least three years as when I was a resident of Chicago and a member of the Trinity congregation.

I LOVED going to Trinity for several reasons. I found the congregation to be inviting, accepting of ALL people, ALL colors, ALL backgrounds. I found Jeremiah Wrights teachings to be progressive in nature, surprisingly political, informative, and sometimes funny. When Obama said he'd never heard Wright say things like he said in that video, I believed him. In three years, I never heard anything like that either. I heard him tell a story about how he told a woman that if she didn't like homosexuals in the church - she should leave, because he wasn't making anyone else leave. I heard him systematically break down poverty in the black community, I heard him build up a congregation hungry for knowledge, and inspiration, but I never heard him say the things Fox News found. That should have been the moment it occurred to me that something was wrong. Fox News.

This video is the full version of one the now infamous sermons of Jeremiah Wright. In it he discusses government, slavery and politics. But that's not all. He talks about how "blacks had an intelligent friend in the oval office" under the Clinton administration and continues to say that we went from an intelligent friend from a dumb Dixie-crat; a rich Republican who has never held a job in his life. That's pretty funny. He then talks countries and their failed attempts at imperialism, which brings us to the section we all know and love. But I don't want to give it all away, you should watch it yourself.

I can see why Fox News would want to take Obama, the first black man with a shot at the White House, a man that has a groundswell of support from not just black voters, but white voters - I can see why they would want to take him down when he bashes the dumb Dixie-crat in office and reminds us all that the election was stolen. Can't you?

Another "clipped" sermon here

not just politically, but theologically. the commandment that says "do not take the Lord's Name in vain" means just that: do not swear falsely by God: don't bring Him into your lies. (it doesn't mean don't say "fuck" or "shit" or whatever.") so in the context of the certain historical tragedies our nation has collectively committed, Wright says it would be blasphemous to invoke the Lord's blessings upon a sin. "Damn" comes from the biblical term "damnation", obviously, which is what God apparently does when one has sinned.

it's a beautiful, thought-provoking and powerful speech that i think most Democrats might agree with. "God Damn America so long as she pretends that she is God." (Doe he say "pretends" or something else?) you can watch all his sermons on Trinity Chicago's youtube channel.

this shows that if Wright really did have influence over obama, obama might not be secretly anti-white, but secretly more progressive than he appears. clearly that's Fox's real problem with his pastor.

I knew that the context had to be there. I knew that the snippets that have been repeated over and over were stripped out of a longer sermon -- one which had a message that was bound to be entirely different from what the sound bite showed.

If I had a stronger stomach, I'm pretty sure that I could find similarly obnoxious comments in the rantings of the Rushes and O'Reallys and their ilk, yank them out of context, and make them into something they were not.

The idea of a coherent thought, a premise followed by a discussion, followed by a conclusion is gone from television and cable news. It's all snippets, sound bites, and spectacle.

Wonderful speech, hard-hitting, honest, full of the truth. Now there's a preacher I'd love to hear more often.
It's high time we had some honesty to clear away this awful mess.

Thank you so much for putting it here!

Thank you for the the full video. I'm really angry about how Rev. Wright has been maligned. I'm even angrier that there isn't more outrage from the black church community. Why is Obama--a politician--left to come to the defense of Trinity UCC and Rev. Wright?

I've sent complaints to the major news organizations about their biased presentation of Rev. Wright and his church, but one person can't effect change.

There needs to be an effort--a push through protests and boycotts--for fair coverage of issues relating to race. Right now, race is depicted through the prism of white-dominated MSM.

Regardless of his comments over the term of his pastorial sermons, Wright embodies all that is bad for race relations in this country. His damnation of America, his joy demonstrated by his horrible comments regarding those that were killed on 9/11, his support of Louis Farrakhan -one of the worst racist in this country, his support of Kadafi overrides any "positive comments he may make.

This guy is nothing more than KKK in black and is a disgrace not to mention a real problem for Obama.

I still support Obama but I have to say his association with Wright has given me reason to pause and consider!

I dont want this swept under the rug as most other media will do. I want this flushed out and I want to see how Obama handles it.. Life as President isn't always a day at the beach. Obama can turn this around to be an excellent opportunity for him.

After the past 7 years of the mouthing of "God Bless America", and militaristic patriotism, Reverand Wrights sermon, in full, is like a breath of hope. Hope that we can change and become a nation of peace if only we have the courage to admit our past failures, both collectively and individually. What a travesty that Wright,s words have been so distored. God save America. We have been blessed far more than we deserve.

Thank you so much for showing this video. It's great to be able to see the broader context within which Rev. Wright made his remarks. Fox News is an embarrassment and a disservice to this country. We need eyes wide open to have any prayer of correcting the wrongs this country has perpetrated on others and on itself.

Isn't it more than a bit hypocritial of Wright to say that "Bill Clinton did to African-Americans what he did to Moncia Lewsinsky. He was riding dirty" after he had praised Clinton with "blacks had an intelligent friend in the Oval Office" during his administration? Which is it? Come on, I am sure that some of his message is healthy but he comes across just like these politicians who twist things to fit their agenda of the moment. When he's bashing Bush (and who can blame him there?) Clinton's A-OK. When Wright is propping up Obama at the expense of Hillary, Bill is just another sleazy politican who's done nothing for blacks.

Thank you so much.
I am a "typical" white 62 year old grandmother and I have never been in a "Black" church. I have been concerned about the whole Rev Wright issue. My daughter sent me the post about "Who inspired Rev Wright". I got online this morning to email it to every one on my email list encluding anyone who still trust Sean Hannity and Fox and the rest of this hate talk radio, and WOW your post was here on Alternet and now its all over Utube.I was wondering why nobody was defending Rev Wright. The sermons I heard were very inspiring and not about hatred of our country or its people.

"Violence begets violence, hate begets hate, terror begets terror."

The radical right media loose their credability and trust with their lies. Because of the internet the truth will always get out. The Republicans didn't let these guys pick their candidate. Lets hope the Democrats don't let them pick our candidate.

That video just drove a stake through the collective hearts of the right-wingers, Hillary fanatics and sophists who would use Mr. Obama's religion as a propaganda tool.

Now, I'm no fan of Mr. Obama, but bringing any candidates religion into a political debate is simply wrong and should be condemned.

Again, thanks Alternet.

The Real Issue

As far as I'm concerned, it is a plus for Obama to admire such an honest man.

But what about Obama's blind allegience to his handlers, Brzezinky, CFR and Trilateral Commission? They are all devout globalists who want to rplace the Constitution with the UN Charter. They want to erase the quaint idea of soverign countries.

Don't you see Obama as being their chosen puppet, complete with outstandingly persuasive charisma?

I find that to be the real danger with Obama. Hillary is equally dangerous for her globalist enthusiasm too. McCain is also. Forget about choice. They are all from the same Corporate Camp and it's already been decided.

which response to 9-11 is crazier?

what Rev. Wright said (I mean the whole speech, NOT the 5 second sound clip played by the MSM)

OR...

the LIES the neocons pushed on the American people about 9-11, about Saddam being pals with al-Quaida, the lies that destroyed many thousands of human lives and our standing in the world?

If Obama has to distance himslef from Wright's comments, McCain has to distance himself from HIS OWN comments

This clip, posted toward the bottom of the same page, was posted about one week ago. Although being redundant about the truth is infinitely better than suppressing it completely, the mass media are still neglecting it! And why is the Obama campaign NOT spreading the word????

I have been hoping someone had the full speech.
It's interesting to watch Obama get not just attacked but molded into this thing we call President.
whether it's this or Eliot Spitzer or any other of the thousands of sound bites that rule a politicians day, "turd blossom" is still out there working hard for the party.
Thanks Karl Rove.

Rev. Wright's sermon is quite inspiring if you are a member of a church. I personally do not listen to much of what any preacher says but thats just the atheist in me. Wright's clip, the one on Fox news, that shows him saying America's chickens have come home to roost was a poor phrase to use. Malcolm X was silenced for the same phrase. Rev. Wright even mentions this in his sermon. Not to mention he misuses the word terrorism but I do admire his convictions. He left himself open to a black nationalist charge because he chose to echo Malcolm X.

In a week during which the Iraq war starts yr. 6 at the same time our military loss of lives reached 4000 the big story is about a loud mouthed pastor in Chicago. And of course the great speech. Obama should have been talking about how he objected to this war instead of defending the preacher. He could have done that next week. Well, at least PBS/ Frontline has its priorities straight, along with today's NY Times. Our military deserves better. ANNA

Listening to this video took me to another level in terms of my now absolute conviction not to vote for Obama if he becomes the democratic candidate. In all my years of voting, I have never crossed the party line, but I wouldn't hesitate this time around. I did not find the comment about our country supporting "terrorism against the Palestinians" nearly as horrifying as the absence of commentary about the innocent Israeli civilians, mother, father, going to work, who were blown up on buses or while celebrating a Seder on one of the holiest days of the year or teenagers having pizza at a pizza parlor after the Sabbath in Jerusalem, or twenty year olds at a discotheque on a Friday night blown up by the terrorist Palestinians. As an American Jew, to think that a potential candidate for the presidency of this country would remain as a member of a church with a leader like this is about as scary as thinking about Haniyeh or Nasrallah in the role. His words were as plain as can be and did not give room for "out of context" interpretation. If our Rabbi or any of the rabbis at our synagogue ever made a comment like he did without giving the full picture of the ongoing "terrorism" that takes place daily against the Israelis who do not put their children in harms way to be blown up so their families can receive monetary compensation, again, speaking for me, I would never set foot in our temple again.
