Journalist and author (Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army) Jeremy Scahill appears on Real Time with Bill Maher and spars with conservative talking head Joe Scarborough. He also presents a segment he filmed with Iraqi Americans and retired General Ann Wright. They discuss the invasion and occupation of Iraq, and what the realistic chances of us getting out of there any time soon is compared to the campaign rhetoric from the Presidential nominees. Check out the video to your right for more.

Brilliant--one of the most relevant video clips i've ever seen on Alternet, thank you

two main reasons why:

1.) it asks IRAQIS what "we" should do with their country. most americans don't realize that the vast majority of Iraqis want us out. most americans, actually, can't even locate iraq on a map.

2.) thank god for schahill. i've heard him before bringing this point home: Obama and Clinton are not anti-war and they are not anti-Iraq-war. both of them will continue the occupation on a massive scale indefinitely. HOW IS THIS NOT A BIGGER ISSUE? how can we continue to let them get away with this? we should not believe Obama when he says that he's opposed this war from the start and that he has a responsible plan to end it. that doesn't mean we have to hate him; it means we have to do what we can (if you agree that the war is doing terrible things) to pressure him to end it.

i disagree, however, with that woman, and so do most policy experts. it's not the logistics of withdrawal that are the problem (congressional budget estimates say it would cost about 5 billion dollars and could be done much more swiftly than this woman suggests), it's our intentions for either staying or leaving.

the only presidential candidate who has put forth a plan that makes sense is kucinich. ron paul and richardson wanted to end the war, but their exit strategy was cut and run. kucinich has an extremely comprehensive blueprint for what could be the most painless way out possible. google it if you're interested. obviously he's not running for pres anymore but his plan is still urgently relevant.

I knew this before we ever went into Iraq. The problem is that most people really don't care about anyone but themselves. They talk otherwise but it's all mostly bullshit.

This is America, we bomb countries, and kill lots of people, this is what we do, this is our country.

Don't think for one minute your vote is going to make a difference on that front because the media ultimately decides who your going to vote for anyways.

the iraq tar-baby or 'holding a wolf by the ears'

if your goal was to somehow profit by the continuation of the 'war' then seeing only the 'fear of letting go' aspect of the iraq occupation keeps you in iraq indefinately. the solution exists only in leaving. not in tiring out the wolf.

trillions wasted. and guess who is profiting.
