Nation Article Gets Positive Results on Blackwater, So Let’s Celebrate, Okay?

If politicians are going to be greeted like this for their efforts, what's the upside for them?

One of the reasons we haven't endorsed during the presidential primary, as we've said often times, is because we want to be able to push candidates on issues that are important to us. Yesterday the Nation did just that when it published an article by Jeremy Scahill (author of the superb book Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army) on the fact that Barack Obama would not rule out the use of mercenaries like Blackwater in Iraq.

So after the article's publication, Hillary Clinton announced that she would co-sponsor legislation to "ban the use of Blackwater and other private mercenary firms in Iraq." Which, when you write a piece like this, is exactly what you want to have happen -- it's what John Edwards did for the issue of poverty the entire time he was in the race. It shines a bright light on the issue, raises it to the level where people start paying attention to it, and puts pressure on others to do follow your lead.

So this is Scahill's update:

Her timing was interesting, to say the least. Why February 28, in the middle of a tough political campaign? Why not after last September's Nisour Square massacre, when Blackwater operatives killed seventeen Iraqi civilians? Or, better, before it?

WTF? What, the article didn't snare the politician they wanted? Mr. Carrot, please meet Mr. Stick.

As Naomi Klein says today at the Huffington Post:

[N]ow is the time when candidates are most open to pressure. For instance, Hillary Clinton just announced that she will co-sponsor legislation to ban the use of private military companies -- exactly one day after my Nation colleague Jeremy Scahill revealed that both Clinton and Obama were poised to let the mercenaries stay in Iraq even if the troops come home. Pushing candidates on the issues during a campaign can have a real impact, so can we please move beyond superfandom?

Sending the wrong message to politicians who respond positively and do what you ask them to do makes it difficult for online activists who are going to keep doing this long after this election is over. If politicians are going to be greeted like this for their efforts, what's the upside for them?

Mitt Romney and Blackwater

I wouldn't rest too comfortably, because I think that Blackwater and other elements of the current administration are working to make Mitt Romney President. Blackwater supported this proven non-vote getter in the primaries. That didn't work, but what are the chances that old man McCain will develop a serious illness before the election? Couldn't a "lone gunman" finish Barack's candidacy? Blackwater has as much respect for Americans as they do for Iraqis.

...and where's the bill to ban the use of Blackwater, Halliburton, KBR, CACI, L3 et alia on our own soil? What about restoring the writ of Habeas Corpus?

Your point seems to be that for Hil to be a day late and a dollar short on this issue is better than nothing...but if you read Ghost Plane you'll find that it was the Clintons who initiated the practice of extraordinary rendition in the first place. Their idea -- but nobody knew about it.

My concern is that Hil as prez would simply bring the contractors back into the shadows, out of the light of day. Go back to funding them in secret. Very, very, very scary.

Whereas Obama has consistently acknowledged the problems with using contractors for a long time, it seems to be something new to disingenuous Hil, who immediately "goes on the warpath"...to cover her past neglect?

Sorry, Jane Hamsher, but your premature rally for Hillary's promise to stop hiring mercenaries is just that. Can we step back a minute and take a deep breath? Is anyone going to ask Hillary Clinton, since her answer was perfunctory and prompt, why are we doing this anyway? How did outsourcing the military work in the Clinton administration? How long has this been going on, why do we do it and might we stake out a new course? And if so, from what vantage point? THAT is how Obama governs, and THAT is the difference. Her promise of a blanket boycott of Blackwater-style mercenaries means practically nothing when we all know that candidates can blame non-action on any issue on Congress and thus leave their promises in the wake of a big election.
So, pardon us for not throwing a big party.
Not yet.

How many of you have heard about HR676 now being proposed in the U.S. House?? None--why does that not suprize me.

On the back cover of NATION Magazine (3-10-08) is an ad being co-sponsered by the California Nurses Assn. and thre National Nurses Organizing committee to give ALL Americans the same health insurance plan enjoyed by our Congress and idiot in waiting, Dick Cheney for whom the bill is named.

In short, bypassing the money monster Insurance Industry and seriously damaging the Drug Industry. Why you will never see this ad.

This is the first time to my knowledge that someone has given to the "We the People" the means to have some influence in getting a bill that will actually benefit the all us lowlifes.

Where to start: Google CHENEYCARE.ORG, SIGN UP AND FOR ONCE ACTUALLY GET OFF YOUR DEAD ASSES AND DO SOMETHING TO HELP YOURSELVES!!

It won't happen if YOU do not participate. Obviously check it out then forward it to everyone you know. We have a chance to do something if we all act. Pass this along to other Blogs. Don't be afraid to send a C.C. to your Congressman and Senators. Crazy Carlos

Why aren't these valid points? I questioned her timing, too! The most obvious answer is SHE SAW THE OPPORTUNITY. A chance to look good vs. Obama. I know that we no longer notice the political opportunism that goes on in an election cycle, but I see nothing wrong with pointing it out when it happens!

Keep writing good articles, Jeremy!!!
