Charles Barkley Slams Conservatives: They're "Fake Christians" [VIDEO]

The former NBA star's comments came after he was asked about his reasons for supporting presidential candidate Barack Obama, instead of Hillary Clinton or any of the Republican candidates.

"I've got great respect for Sen. McCain, great respect, but I don't like the way Republicans have taken this country," said Barkley. "Every time I hear the word 'conservative,' it makes me sick to my stomach, because they're really just fake Christians, as I call them. That's all they are."

"I think they want to be judge and jury," Barkley said. "Like, I'm for gay marriage. It's none of my business if gay people want to get married. I'm pro-choice. And I think these Christians, first of all, they're not supposed to judge other people. But they're the most hypocritical judge of people we have in the country. And it bugs the hell out of me. They act like they're Christians. They're not forgiving at all."

I applaud Sir Charles for his comments about Christians who ignore biblical text when it doesn't serve their political/social agendas. It was quite brave of him to speak out on these issues (he is nothing if not outspoken) but I fear for his sports broadcasting career on TNT. As for his chances of winning the governorship of Alabama, they have always been slim to none. But he'd be better than other ex-athlete-politicos, except perhaps for Bill Bradley.

I applaud Charles Barkley's courage to challenge the ridiculous hypocrisy in conservative christian political agendas. We need more people like him to take a stand and follow his lead. We need to point out that not everyone in this country is in agreement with conservative christians agendas and it is perfectly ok to have strong opposition to them.

Always Ask WHY
Posted by: AlwaysAskWhy on Feb 16, 2008 11:56 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Charles Barkley's stance leads one to ask this simple question:
pro-LIFE...or just pro-BIRTH?

As Dennis Kucinich said long ago:

War is a weapon of mass destruction.
Poverty is a weapon of mass destruction.
Hunger is a weapon of mass destruction.
Poor Education is a weapon of mass destruction.
Racism is a weapon of mass destruction.
Homelessness is a weapon of mass destruction.
and
PRESIDENTIAL LIES ARE A WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION.

One could add many more...of the things that people who claim to be Christians have no problem with supporting...even funding.

They clamor against abortion, but vote for and support people who endanger everything that makes for a civil, humane, peaceful and sustainable society. They vote for people who endanger even themselves and their families. One has to question their sanity... (to they have Stockholm Syndrome?)

REAL CHRISTIANS: Sojourners, Reverend Jim Wallis' organization of evangelical Christians, rebukes and rejects the policies of a so-called Christian, Neo-"CON" presidential administration that profits from death, destruction, poverty, oppression. They have a very different "what would Jesus do?" take on government policy.

A year or so ago, about 200 Sojourners got themselves arrested on the steps of the Capitol declaring that our national budget is a MORAL DOCUMENT.

Now these are REAL Christians!

What I just saw was the real Christian deal with Charles Barkley. His bluntness and unambigious answers may cost him in his Alabama governor project, but, then again, maybe not. W may have just lost the South for a generation, so why not Charles Barkley? All I got say is...don't ever let them shut you up, Mr. Barkley.

This interview confirms it--Charles Barkley is the dumbest human who ever lived.!

He blathers on and on about how conservatives are "fake Christians"--a blanket and patently untrue statement--not that many are Christians. And very few are fake. But how would he know?

Then he tries to quote a Bible verse he obviously knows nothing about.

Oh--it gets funnier--he makes a comment about how we shouldn't judge each other, and how these "fake Christians" should read their Bible and not judge others.

Ummm, Charles: THAT WAS A JUDGMENT YOU JUST MADE...hypocrite.

I've got every right to judge--I'm a thinking human with a moral structure. Who SHOULD judge, Charles--dogs and cats?!?

Wait--if everything is permissible in your Morally Relative world then I think I will break into your house and steal your 300" flat screen TV. What?!? It's not wrong--it's how I FEEL, man!

You're pro choice and pro gay marriage, huh. I bet your salary from endorsements I could obliterate you in 5 minutes in a debate on either, and I'm a rookie.

Get a clue you brainless stump. I swear--this guy made zillions by putting a ball in a hole and THIS is who Democrats put forth as an example of their party?! I honestly hope he does win Alabama governorship so that--when he fails miserably--he proves to the world his worthlessness as anything but a ball-bouncing Gambler's Anonymous piece of wood.

But whatever--this post will be gone in a day because liberals cannot handle criticism of their views. GO TOLERANCE!

Barkley in 2014!!!

He's a fake journalist. He should take Barkley's words about not judging other people to heart. He is one of the most condescending schmucks in the business. I feel pretty sure that he cares a lot more about influencing other people's perspectives than in reporting the news as it really happens.

Well, Blow Me Down

Re: Sir Charles – Well, blow me down! Not long ago, Sir Charles was making pro Neo-Con observations in public and floating trial balloons regarding a second career as a Republican politician - and in return receiving the wrath of the Demos and the love and adoration of the Repubs.

Earlier he made headlines by hawking up a goober and launching it at a particularly nasty heckler in the crowd at a professional basketball game in which Sir Charles was a participant. At the time, the spitting was certainly sensational, newsworthy stuff, but he missed the heckler – his goober struck a young white girl child full in the face - which, as one might imagine, triggered a news frenzy that lasted weeks.

He made headlines again when he declared that he is not a role model, disclaiming a traditional dynamic in the status of star American athletes – a valid issue with a point he might have succeeded in making had he more intellectual abilities than his college experience seems to have afforded him.

There are other interesting, sometimes exciting anecdotes – typically overblown and over reacted to by the press, not always foolish, but frequently establishing the breadth of his heart, the depth of his involvement and attention, his delightful conversational abilities - in which he typically expresses his honest, heartfelt opinions and – sad to say, his ignorance and emotional immaturity.

Sir Charles does not surprise me today. You, Dear Forum Participants, are who surprise me today! Sir Charles typically inspires over-blown reactions, but today your gushing rushing acceptance of Sir Charles as your anointed leader of Alabama and spokesman for our "Anti Excessive Religion & Hypocrisy in Politics" concerns has me re-pondering Abraham Lincoln’s observation “You can fool ALL of the people some of the time…”

Sir Charles, in whom I delight, does not delude me: he is no better prepared for political leadership than Mayor Ray Nagin of New Orleans. He would be a fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants political leader who would soon steer the craft into a mountain of ignorance.

You guys were so easy! A few pandering words from an international sports celebrity and Bang! you roll over and spread your legs. Usually I tend to believe progressives are more thoughtful than y’all appear today!

Mr. Barkley wants to blast conservative christians so he deserves a fair response. Yes in one sense all christians are hypocrites, because even after becoming one you cant live a perfect life. But what bible does Mr. Barkley read? I think his has only one page in it in bold letters. His bible says dont judge others. End of book. We christians who are against abortion and gay marriage do so because these are clearly stated principles in both the old and new testament. Its not about hatred for the people who want to do these things. We are simply agreeing to and supporting bible principles. Principles communicated to the prophets, kings, and other great figures of the bible by the Spirit of God. We all do things that are wrong, but we are truly deceived when we begin to believe the wrong things we do, are actually right. if the bible said that wearing the color red was a sin, then we christians would be against it. Its not about our preferences. Its about whats in the bible. to all democrats who are professing christians in your heart do you really believe Jesus would be in favor of abortion? If not how do you reconcile voting for people who are? Mr. Barkley supports Barack Obama, a Senator who voted against the Born Alive act. This Act would ensure life saving measures be given to babies who had survived abortions. Barack Obama said NO!!! God gives us all freedom of choice, that doesnt mean our choices are correct. When I die I have to answer to God and I have sins to answer for. But one of them will never be that i supported the killing of the unborn or voted to empower someone who did. I sincerely hope someday Mr. Barkley accepts Christ as his saviour. The real Christ of the bible, not his christ who would favor abortion and gay marriage.

Christians Don't Have Immunity
Posted by: LeaderofMen on Feb 18, 2008 4:50 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Somehow, somewhere along the line people in the US decided that Christians have some sort of innate immunity to scrutiny.

Sorry folks. Doesn't work that way. We live in the 21st century. Just because you profess a 'religion' doesn't automatically mean you get a pass. You see, about 300+ years ago the Age of Enlightenment occurred. Christians love to pretend it never happened. The Age of Enlightenment brought us things like science, reason in government and even, YES EVEN democracy (once again).

But Christians want to pretend none of that occurred in a secular environment. Thus, they think they're immune to anyone who disputes their myth spewing hatred into the general environment.

Barkley is obviously not a Bible scholar, but he can smell a despicable Christian. Anyone with a rational thought process can smell their fuzzy logic, their incomplete wiring, their inability to spell, and the incest. Yes, the incest.

Hypocritical Christians are crawling all over AL. I used to live there. They're all over the place.

Religion is unquestionably the most lucrative business ever devised. It preys on the gullible, uninformed, hapless people in search of answers to questions that defy them, or simply have no rational answer; a sacred security blanket if you will. Founded on mythical nonsense, loosely rooted in history, those in control are uncannily shrewd in their ability at mind control, giving false hope while milking people dry. Unfortunately, it also breeds rabidly bigoted individuals who presume to legislate, outside of their sphere, what's right and wrong for others. There were valid reasons for separating church and state. Let's not allow that separation to become clouded.

Barkley the Monumentally Ignorant

Charles Barkley betrays his ignorance in the comments made in this video. He takes a Biblical allusion and twists it to mean that we are not to judge immorality, which turns Christianity and every other religion on its head. This is ludicrous. Additionally it is every citizens with any sense's business to be concerned with gay marriage. This is another completely ignorant remark. Marriage is the first societal institution. It is the pillar of civilization because it is the best environment for the rearing of healthy children. In a strong society, marriage is not based merely on the sexual desires of the people involved, but rather the welfare of the children who, in turn, perpetuate the society. Wake up everybody. Civilizations for milennia have recognized the importance and value of traditional marriage for the well-being of its children and for far more profound reasons than that of pure lust and companionship. Barkley is perpetuating the dangerous myth that marriage is no one's business but the two (or three) people (or animals) demanding it like whiny, petulant children.

I see a lot of Anti-Christian comments here and they seem to be aimed at ALL Christian Conservatives. Anybody here think that it might be a tad on the wrong side to lump all Christian Conservatives into one big evil group? Sort of contributes to the whole intolerance thing doesn't it? Maybe?
