Who Gets to Say That Jamie Lynn Spears Is a Bad Mom?

Posted by Jane Hamsher, Firedoglake at 5:10 AM on December 24, 2007.

It's a lazy, misogynistic narrative that has at its heart the notion that a woman really just better stay home and take care of the kids.

Now that everyone in the free world knows 16 year-old Jamie Lynn Spears is up the spout, mother Lynn's book on parenting has apparently been shitcanned by its Christian publisher. In a subtly titled article, the Boston Herald.com says "Mama Spears book on parenting aborted."

Classy.

But the question of who gets to decide who a good mother is comes up with some frequency, as it did recently when Elizabeth Edwards decided to stay on the campaign trail. In addition to getting blasted by faithful husband and concern troll Jay Carney, she was on the receiving end of some mom blog rancour:

Elizabeth, I DON'T LIKE the choices you have made!

Take your kids home. Get off the campaign trail. Your husband is not going to be the candidate, and he is not going to be president. He is not ahead in the polls. He is not going to make it. We need a Democratic in office desperately, and you are harming that chance by going around saying negative things about the TOP candidates and splitting the vote. Worst of all, you are forcing your young children, who should be in school to ride in buses and talk to the press when they obviously don't want to. This election is NOT ABOUT THEM. They deserve some peace, not time with nannies and campaign-trail daycare providers, since, as the Times article describes, you don't have time to see them when you are busy campaigning too.

To which Elizabeth Edwards responded:

I want to be entirely clear. You don't get to say I am a terrible mother because you think you wouldn't make my choices in my situation. You don't get to say that my children don't want to be with us when you don't know them and when, parenthetically, you know that happy children can be periodically disagreeable. You don't get to judge me because you think you know exactly what you would do if you had my disease. I want to be really clear: you don't know. And if the sun always shines on you -- and I pray it does -- you will never know.

I don't know if Lynn Spears is a great mom or otherwise, but I imagine few of the CNN reporters who have gone all concern troll over the fate of Jamie Lynn do either. It's a lazy, misogynistic narrative that has at its heart the notion that a woman really just better stay home and take care of the kids. I notice that CNN isn't unwilling to exploit the situation and put the story into hyper-rotation.

There's also a good deal of classism going on with the reporting of the story. As if southern teenagers are the only ones who get pregnant. But I find it interesting that one candidate has internalized the Steve Gilliard lesson, i.e., talk about the things people want to talk about and insert your message:

"Apparently, she's going to have the child, and I think that is the right decision, a good decision, and I respect that and appreciate it," he told CBS News.

"I hope it is not an encouragement to other 16-year-olds who think that is the best course of action. But at the same time I'm not going to condemn her," continued Huckabee, a Southern Baptist minister who has been soaring in the polls lately due to increased support from Christian conservatives. "There'll be plenty of people in line to do that and I always look for the shortest lines.

Whatever you want to say about him, Huckabee is not a stupid man -- and he knows who he's talking to.

Where are those two? An old ladies' hair salon, or bingo night?

I guess it's just show-biz, but even people at the water cooler seem to be "shocked." What's to be shocked about? Did you not have friends or acquaintances in high school who got pregnant?

This is the same as the reaction to JJ's breast at the Super Bowl. Americans love to feel holier-than-thou.

You can bet these news programs will have a "Special Edition: How to talk to your children about Britney's Sister."

I don't think I've ever read a less focused, more badly-constructed Alternet post. What exactly the hell was the point here?

No, really, I'm not trying to be ironic or sarcastic... what the hell was your point, Alternet?

Mother Spears' would be ok, except for the fact that she put her kids in showbiz, big time. The business kills children, everybody knows it, and it takes a uniquely calculating, mercenary, driven sort of person to subject a child she professes to love to the rigors of performing, and the emotional aftermath.

The shitstorm that is Britney today is the result of a childhood filled with backbreaking work with no time to figure out how to be an adult, plus the concommittant rage. Maybe Jamie Lynn has unconsciously chosen this way to get out of the whole mess a little early.

Wasn't there a blog entry a couple of days ago doing exactly what this story is criticizing - pretending to know exactly what was going on in the mind and body of Ms. Spears, as well as pretending to know exactly how she was raised? I must say I find this article a lot more reasonable and thought provoking, and I wish Alternet, if it needs to cover the topic, would stay with stories like this that are a cut above.

Oh please! The Spears family is backwoods low class trailer trash. Regardless of any "talent" some people see in them they are ignorant people (not the same as stupid).

In a way they are like Bill Clinton - you can send a bubba to the best schools in the world and when he gets out he is still a bubba.

Spears (all of them) are just living proof Sherman didn't get to finish the job.

Poor judgement for Jamie Lynn

She is a poor role model for young people. Ofccourse she has the money to raise a baby. Most of the 10 - 15 years olds do not. This is a sad situation she has put her self into. I am all for choices and this is not a good one. After she dropped the F bomb trying to defend her sister several months ago. If she is anything loke her sister only bad things are to come. Her show should be cancelled for dure

I guess that shows how much I really care about the whole thing - the fact that I didn't know a Lynn Spears existed. I can only think of three pertinent things to say:

1) I'm not sure which "southern state" this "couple" lives in, but in Wisconsin a nineteen-year-old having intercourse with a sixteen-year-old is statutory rape.
2) I wish Elizabeth Edwards were running for president. The woman has guts and is intelligent (unlike many of the candidates).
3) I can't believe the author, and many of the posters here, appear to be saying that it is alright for a sixteen-year-old to get pregnant and have a baby. Am I really hearing that right? I mean, it happens, but is that something that, as a society, we want to condone? Seriously???!!!

She IS a terrible mother

Sorry but it is not only easy but pretty much a given to say that she is a terrible mother. ALL she can see are the dollar signs with her daughters. What other mom would suddenly find ways to make money off of a 16 year old girls pregnancy.

The only difference between Jamie and your typical trailer trash is the money. Just look at the two girls and what they are doing.

A 16 year getting knocked up.

An older daughter going crazy.

Women have been getting pregnant from having sex ever since the beginning of us as a species... are we supposed to be "shocked" because this girl is the sibling of a troubled music star or because she is "only" 16? Get a life. Planet wide, 16 is a pretty normal time to become pregnant... it is only our country's unexamined, residual puritanism that tells us it is wrong... an unthinking result that harkens back to when women were chattel and only of value from the standpoint of potential wealth to her parents if she remained a virgin until a "suitable" husband were found for her. Let the girl alone, and her mother, PLEASE. Sex is good for you and in her case, her family already HAS plenty of money from Britney's career so what is the problem? Save yourself, leave the kids alone.

Harpies casting their judgement... look at those faces and tell me if you see any sense of compassion there? I would fear children growing up into people like these more than i would any of them getting pregnant because Jamie did... the whole thing is stupid.

but...looking up the statutes of Louisiana recently there is no question the 19 year old "student" boyfriend is guilty of statutory rape and should be in custody RIGHT NOW.
If he walks on this one every other man accused of underage sex has a precedent to walk, too.
