In in the 1996 Lili Taylor classic, Girls Town, a New Jersey high school girl commits suicide. Her girlfriends find out -- from the dead girl's diary -- it was because she had been raped -- by the same group of guys that had raped another one of them.

They get no help what so ever from the authorities (surprise!) so they take direct action: they trash the new car of the rapist ringleader. Break the windows with baseball bats, spray paint it, dent it up with cinder blocks. It is an extremely visceral scene, unforgettable. Pure rage.

Now, surely there are highly skilled military women in Baghdad, intelligence officers. Surely they can find out who these guys are.

What a courageous example for women in these United States! This young woman, strong through her pain, should get a medal.
The criminal abuse of women and girls is the direct result of a brutal, war-like culture. This goes on everyday and is covered up by a male-defended system of justice. Where are the men-of-good-conscience in decision-making positions? This is unacceptable. Vote for a woman for President. It's the only way we are going to get some justice for our "women's issues"......war, violence, unequal pay, no maternity or child-care laws, abysmal health and elder care. I could go on. Yes, it's true, W stands for Women, just like the Bush-Cheney '04 campaign said. Last I saw, Bush was about 6th in line to particpate in the victimization of the next woman to be abused, injured and degraded the culture of lawlessness and violence he and Cheney have cultivated far and wide. If this is what happens to an American woman in Iraq when exposed to male workers, one can only guess at the horrors faced by Iraqi women. Hundreds of men in Guantanamo have been incarcerated for years without trial; they are denied access to justice.

Hundreds of men in Iraq roam free killing civilians and raping American girls; they are shielded from justice.

These Hessians need to be brought home and put on trial for their crimes. If not, if the administration continues to grant them immunity and impunity, then surely the administration (and by extension the country it represents) becomes morally complicit in this awful rape.

Should justice ever eventually prevail, these monsters will have a nice warm cell waiting for them out there in Gitmo.

The brutality and cruelty which Ms Jones suffered because she chose to publicly disclose her victimization is essentially the same as that suffered by the victim in the recent Saudi Arabian case. Prior to Ms Jones reportage, our hypocrisy was simply not expressly visible: the assumption that Ms Jones case is unprecedented is either irresponsibly ignorant - like blowing secondary smoke in a baby's face because one didn't know the health risks involved - or it is 'participatory' hypocrisy. The latter is America's signature. Hopefully, the international embarrassment - if any - will awaken the public to the plethora of cases like Ms Jones - I am reminded of the immunity with which Afghani, African, Iraqi, Okinawan, ... children are raped by US soldiers and citizens. Or is it the case that unless Ms Jones' suffering eliminates some financial comfort for the US consumer, it will simply become more dust under the carpet - like the discounted goods of sweatshops and slavery, until we feel financially penalized for purchasing these goods the shops and slavery will continue????
