Sherri Shepherd Strikes Again, Says Her Son Can't Be Transgendered Until He's 18 and Out of Her House

This post, written by Melissa McEwan, originally appeared on Shakesville

Apropos of Jeff's post yesterday about boys playing with toy kitchens, and Space Cowboy's post on Monday about The View's Sherri Shepherd being an ignorant idiot), here's said idiot going apeshit about how her son won't be allowed to wear a dress in her house, after a discussion of the news re: boys and kitchens turns into a discussion of boys wearing girls' clothes.

Here's an approximate transcript of the relevant bits: "Not in my house! Not in my house! Not in my house! My son isn't putting on dresses! Girls wear dresses! When he's 18, he can do what he wants, but not in my house!"

Everyone who believes Sherri Shepherd won't care what her son does when he's 18, raise your hand.

No hands? Shocking.

Btw, I'm officially calling a moratorium on people invoking Scottish kilts during a discussion on transgenderism. First of all, it's truly not relevant. Kilts aren't "skirts." They are gender-specific, and they are menswear. To use them as example of men who dress "like women" is a misrepresentation, and it just confuses the argument about what being transgender really is. It's approximately like suggesting that a woman who wears a woman's business suit is cross-dressing.

And secondly, Scottish men don't run around in kilts anymore. On special occasions, you'll see a guy in a kilt. Or maybe if he's in a band that specializes in Scottish folk music. Or if he's had all his trousers stolen.

But on the average day, they wear pants. They've got electricity now, too.

And assuredly she has no clue as to why "girls wear dresses" in the first place... that it is a purely social construct, not some biological role.

Apparently Sherri’s job was to fill the idiot seat more so than the conservative one.

operation to be trangendered? Or at least taking hormones? I thought there was some deal about men who like to dress up as women, like Guiliani, could still be 'straight' (sometimes) but don't really want to become a women. Those are 'transvestites'. Then you have guys who actually get there sex organs removed and take pills to become an actual, albeit infertile and hairy, woman. I thought that was a 'transgendered'. It gets very confusing because you also, apparently, got some folks that have both sex organs (I guess pre-operation or birth defect) that aren't either! Which one is her son?

They actually found a co-cost dumber than Hasselback? AMAZING! Why does anyone bother to watch this trash anymore? Is this how Walter's career ends?

Transgenderism?!

Isn't it strange how they all so quickly jumped from "boys are getting toy kitchens" to "transgenderism"? EATING IS UNIVERSAL! Those who do not eat, die. There are (still) millions of people starving around the world who can attest to the brutal simplicity of this fact. And yet, for a boy to play at making a meal is automatically cause to suspect that he's transgendered?

Wouldn't it make more sense to suspect that he might one day become a great chef, or, at the very least, more successful with the ladies?

Nothing against the transgendered, but that has nothing to do with toy kitchens.

Pre-school should make no issue of who dresses up as what. I remember a child in pre-school who donned chaps and a bridal veil everyday. It was his favorite costume. He had no concept that chaps did not go with a bridal veil, he had no concept of what was masculine wear versus feminine wear. It was refreshing. I think he plays high school football now, has a girl friend and wears neither chaps or veils but that is beside the point.

Crossdressing is not a transgender behavior. Transgenders are not even homosexual -- they are gender switched, which means their choice of dress is consistent with their gender identity. They are attracted to the opposite gender in that sense. Transvestites are often heterosexual men who enjoy dressing in women's clothing.

I love men in kilts. It shows off their legs, and in a good breeze, certain other assets. Woo hoo!

Frankly, kilts make more sense for men than pants. It lets the equipment hang freely, and offers easier access when Nature calls. Again, love those legs.

when men wore skirts

Once upon a time everyone wore skirts/tunics/dresses. Men "kilted up" their skirts to get them out of the way when they were working, so eventually pants were designed, to simplify work, not because skirts were feminine.

Girls who refuse to wear dresses?

Why all the focus on a little boy who wants to wear dresses? There is surprising lack of discussion on girls who want to dress like boys or refuse to wear dresses.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose, n'est-ce pas?

Men in Kilts

This is changing too. In the 60's, women weren't "allowed" to wear pants.
There has been a resurgence of kilt wearing around the globe. Men are growing tired of the "tyranny of trousers". Just look at the success of Utilikilts http://www.utilikits.com. In fact there is an online presence of kilt wearing men from around the world at http://xmarksthescot.com Feel the freedom!

Dale (full time kilt wearer since August 2005)
