Yesterday on ABC's sitcom Boston Legal, attorney Shirley Schmidt, played by Candice Bergen, was tasked with defending a "shock jock" who was fired for saying on air, "Old people should die." The comment was allegedly part of his political argument that the United States "could be heading for a day when the bulk of our federal budget goes to subsidizing retirees."

While the plot of the show is fictional, Bergen's character took a real-life approach in her arguments defending the fired radio host. She blasted the media for censoring political content while ignoring "racist or hateful remarks":

Glenn Beck. He's on CNN, the "most trusted name in news." He's referred to the Katrina survivors as a vulgarity I'm not allowed to repeat here. He also said he didn't think it possible to hate any victims faster than the 9/11 victims.

These so-called journalists are everywhere, and frankly, I wouldn't mind seeing them gone. But it's one thing to curtail racist or hateful remarks, it's quite another to censor political content.

Watch the video to your right.

Here's the Sept. 9 quote on The Glenn Beck Show that Bergen referenced:

But the second thought I had when I saw these people and they had to shut down the Astrodome and lock it down, I thought: I didn't think I could hate victims faster than the 9-11 victims. These guys -- you know it's really sad. We're not hearing anything about Mississippi. We're not hearing anything about Alabama. ... And that's all we're hearing about, are the people in New Orleans. Those are the only ones we're seeing on television are the scumbags.

Bergen identified that Beck has a show on CNN. But she should also have mentioned that he's a contributor to Boston Legal's network, ABC; Beck is a regular commentator on Good Morning America. When he was hired, GMA's senior executive producer called Beck a "leading cultural commentator with a distinct voice."

Too bad ABC executives don't take the advice of their own shows more seriously.

They don't want thoughtful Analysis, they want to incite Bigotry and Racism

Glenn Beck, Carlson, Novak, Imus and their ilk do not want to contribute to BUILDING A BETTER USA, they want to tear it down by disingenuously "pretending to be" beacons of Patriotism and experts on the Constitution and what the Founding Fathers' MEANT not what they WROTE.

Their divisive and hateful speech, interruptions and shooting down of any dialogue on THEIR shows (forget the audience, the management hired them as Television's version of Howard Stern) is as old as the Willie Horton ad and Karl Rove's nasty "trick" of calling SC voters to tell them that John McCain had adopted a "black baby" (knowing the inherent racism exist enough to cost just enough points in the polls), it doesn't MATTER that it is HIS CHILD, all was fair to KARL ROVE.

The Bush Administration ushered in these creeps on a red carpet with Karl Rove on the red carpet the longest to get his press photos.

The carpet rolled-up long ago as the party goers started sneaking out through the side doors with hors d'ouves stuffed in their pockets and purses. Their resumes having been out for months they are leaving the party early so when the ship goes down, only the captain will be left to go down.

Too bad more rats won't be sinking with him. Carl Novak would be my first choice.

Otherwise I would have never known about this. I am heartened to see the piling on finally getting started. I expected it a long time ago. The slowness was due to media monopoly, we had to build a new competing media to break through. That is not right, but it is the way it is.

all of these right wing nutjobs, including O'Reilly, Hannity and Limpdick, should be "bitch slapped" and forced to live in cardboard boxes for a year and then shipped to Oregon and introduced to my relatives there (I'm in sucky Michigan - economy, not environment) who will thrash them and feed them to bears.

Just like the Iraq war, the truth just doesn't get televised.

We keep waiting for TV to change . . .

Anyone who thinks ABC doesn't know exactly what it's doing by allowing fictional characters to inveigh against real ones is a sweet naive kid.

Sure keeps the viewer off balance, doesn't it? Gee, they let her say this--is it possible ABC is secretly on our side?

We still desperately want to believe that television will save us with the perfect talking head. Witness the many films where the WHOLE WORLD watches, lists, and believes: the miracle of HDTV.

We really want to see the newscaster ask the tough question, disrupt the news conference, interrupt this broadcast. And we keep tuning in to see if it happens.

But that's like waiting for a department-store mannequin to come to life.

ABC's just doing what Fox has allowed for years. Somebody could put together a couple of hours of clips of the Simpson's characters mocking and ridiculing Fox.

I'd watch it. And cheer.
