Huckabee Pretended to Get a Phone Call from God Endorsing Bush in '04

Last night at the CNN/YouTube debate, a questioner asked the candidates -- "who would call yourselves Christian conservatives" -- to answer what would Jesus do about the death penalty. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee jokingly responded, "Jesus was too smart to ever run for public office. That's what Jesus would do."

It was fitting that Huckabee be asked what Jesus thinks because, in the past, the former Baptist minister has asserted an ability to talk directly to God.

At a Republican Governors Association Dinner in 2004, Huckabee took the stage and began to deliver remarks when his cell phone rang. He took the phone out of his pocket and proceeded to have a conversation with God about President Bush's reelection:

HUCKABEE: Hello? I'm sorry. I'm right in the middle of an event. It's who? It's God? On the phone for me? How did he get my number? Oh, God has everybody's number. OK? Yes, I'll hold.
Huckabee then engaged in a 3-minute back-and-forth exchange with God, in which Huckabee asserted that God was with the Republicans and President Bush:
We're behind [Bush], yes, sir, we sure are. Yes, sir, we know you don't take sides in the election. But, if you did, we kind of think you'd hang in there with us, Lord, we really do.
Huckabee then ended his conversation and walked off the stage to roaring applause. ThinkProgress has obtained the video from this 2004 GOP fundraiser. Watch it to your right.

As Matt Taibbi wrote in Rolling Stone, Huckabee's religious zealotry has potentially serious consequences:

This God stuff isn't just talk with Huck. One of his first acts as governor was to block Medicaid from funding an abortion for a mentally retarded teen-ager who had been raped by her stepfather -- an act in direct violation of federal law, which requires states to pay for abortions in cases of rape. "The state didn't fund a single such abortion while Huckabee was governor," says Dr. William Harrison of the Fayetteville Women's Clinic. "Zero."
As president, Huck would support a constitutional amendment banning abortion and would give science a back seat to religion. "Science changes with every generation and with new discoveries, and God doesn't," he says. "So I'll stick with God if the two are in conflict." Huckabee's well-documented disdain for science was reflected in the performance of the Arkansas school system when he was governor; one independent survey gave the state an F for its science standards in schools, a grade that among other things reflected Huckabee's hostility toward the teaching of evolution.
Well before Rudy was taking calls from his wife, Huckabee was answering direct dials from God.

Digg!

Why are the fundie Christians so anti-science? I don't get it. IF there is a God, which I believe to be unlikely, then God (who is not a "He" or even a "She", but is an "It") is the very definition of science and science is the very definition of God. But with the anti-science attitude of the fundamentalists it is 'almost' like what matters is not HOW THINGS REALLY ARE, but just what it says in the Bible, the true Truth be damned. Do I have that right?

Do GOP god squad governors call prison wardens direct to commute executions, or do they wait to hear from Jesus first?

What if they're in a cell phone dead zone and Jesus can't get through?

Time to eliminate the death penalty - if you're not sure Jesus can always get through when He needs to, how are you sure He wants you to electrocute someone?

The whole God thing from the Republicans is getting out of hand.
The Republicans seem to be using religion as a smokescreen as they cannot or will not face the real issues & truth.
I fear a climax between the believers & non believers is not too far off.

Better Than Bush, But Only Just

What makes Hucksterbee dangerous is that he really isn't as bad as Bush. His beliefs are sincere, unlike Bush's stage-managed religiousity, and he does have humane moments. But being better than Bush is a pretty low hurdle to clear, and on some of the most important issues he is every bit as bad; he's jingoistic, pro-war, pro-torture, pro-death penalty, anti-choice, virulently homophobic and prone to cronyism and petty corruption. As they did with Bush in 2000 and 2004, the media idolize him as a decent, sincere and reliable sort, a guy next door. But beneath the jovial demeanor and slick rhetoric lies another authoritarian, intolerant extremist.

I still maintain that no candidate should ever be allowed to say anything whatsoever about religion. I view Huckabee and the likes of him as very dangerous people. Is he so sure that God thinks that marriage, etc. (whatever he said) are the most important issues, or is he just trying to return the favor of God creating man in his image? What if God thinks that there are other things far more important, such as feeding the poor, providing shelter for the homeless, etc.? He may be sincere, but he's still dangerous.

Does the Huckster realize how incredibly sacreligious it is to speak for his God? He mustn't really be religious, because that's the kind of thing every religion's holy book guarantees a strikedown for.

...........than I thought. He started ok, imitating Bob ??? (can't recall his name) and then degenerated to a smarmy demagogic pile of stupid Christian slop. (But that's redundant.) He's more dangerous than Bushit because he's not so obviously stupid and incoherent. Maybe the idiots who voted for Bushit will think that Hickabilly is too smart for them.

The Heathens are to be Converted or Destroyed

For Bush and Huckabee, the Christian God is the only one that counts. Muslims, Buddhists, and all the rest of them are to be "smitten." Since, they will undoubtedly rot in hell anyway. Of course, as in Iraq, it is Americas duty to conquer the heathen lands and convert them to Jesus. As for the Jews, we can tolerate and even encourage them because they are preparing the way for the Rapture and the End Times. Our Jesus is also a free market capitalist, demonstrated as the non-sinners and most righteous rise to the economic top. The poor are sinners and also are to be smitten. This is the American Way of God.

It's nice to know that Huckabee has a sense of humor. If by some miracle he's our next president, he'll be a definite improvement over the goofy gonad currently in that slot. Of course, that's not saying much.

What does one really expect from the wacko Christian right! There can be little doubt that these Christian zealots of modern times are actually direct reincarnation of the mindless Christians who delivered the world the barbaric "Christian Middle Ages" in Europe. Their patterns of heinous crimes and misrepresentations of Christ are predictable as they regurgitate their ancient life cycles in a modern context.

The humble sage said about identifying these bastardised souls: By their fruits we shall know who they are and The sinners will keep on sinning, reincarnation, after reincarnation after reincarnation.

Huckabee Pretended to Get a Phone Call from God Endorsing Bush in '04
Sir
I read many comments on the religious side attacking the video as anti religious. What I know is the whole world out here has those who believe in God, Jesus, Buddha, Christ, Rama, Moses, Allah, Shiva, name them we have the names tagged on the creator. Call him anything you want to, but all have their own beliefs , stand up to this, will not move away from this, believe ardently in the creator irrespective of who calls the creator with what names, we still live in the world of religions. Well at least most of the past years that are now called elders. The young generations too have the faith. The doctors will stitch the patient's skull after the operation or close the valve of the heart with the note, "I have done my best. Now let us prey". Is that not the message we ought to take from the video, to me this was depression antidote. I loved every minute of this, laughed, played more then seven time on 2nd December Sunday and will come back to this. Simple. There is worse news around anyway. So why spoil my Sunday by leaping to many diverse conclusion of the video being anti religion.
I thank you

Do you have any idea how your behavior looks before the rest of the world? If you and your neocon friends find this humorous then you're just too damned stupid to think of being president. We've had 2 administrations making us look foolish. We don't need more of the same. ANNA

If you think this skit is a threat, you must be missing a sense of humor. Huckabee says in the skit that God "doesn't take sides" politically. Watch the video (and skip the editorial comments).
