During last night's CNN/YouTube debate, a YouTube questioner asked the candidates why they refuse to condemn waterboarding as torture. Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney said that before making such a determination, he would need to get "counsel on a matter of this nature" from "a lot" of people. One of the people with whom Romney said he would specifically like to speak is Blackwater vice chairman Cofer Black:

I am not. I'm not going to specify the specific means of what is and what is not torture so that the people that we capture will know what things we're able to do and what things we're not able to do. And I get that advice from Cofer Black, who is a person who was responsible for counterterrorism in the CIA for some 35 years.

Black is Romney's Senior Adviser for counterterrorism and national security issues. He has described Black as a man with a "long and impressive career dedicated to making America safer and more secure in the world," despite the fact that Blackwater has allegedly been involved in at least seven violent episodes this year that have left almost 30 Iraqi civilians dead.

Romney is also relying on a man for torture advice who in 2001, infamously ordered a CIA agent to "Capture Bin Laden, kill him and bring his head back in a box on dry ice," and once promised put the "heads" of terrorists in Afghanistan "on sticks":

"We're going to kill them," CIA counterterrorism official Cofer Black said, according to the book, which details the Bush administration's build-up to the Iraq war. "We're going to put their heads on sticks. When we're through with them they will have flies walking across their eyeballs."

Romney has repeatedly dodged answering questions during debates, instead saying he needs to consult with his advisers before taking a stand. During an October CNBC debate, Romney said that before figuring out if he'd need congressional approval to invade Iran, he'd have to ask his lawyers: "You sit down with your attorneys and tell you what you have to do."

You gotta love Mittens there are no issues on which he has an opinion before consulting with someone or other . You remember that Dubya also consulted with various attornies before declaring that we don't torture . Of course these attornies basically said whatever Bush and company wanted to hear .
Incidentally Mitt perhaps you could consult John McCain on the issue of torture . It's a LOT different to be on the receiving end ( McCain) than on the giving end ( Black) .

that not only Romney, but the entire field of Elephants running are clueless. They are falling all over themselves to "Out-Bush" GW! If we think things are bad now, just wait! It gets worse!

Waterboarding, according to all credible experts, is the very definition of torture. This should be a no-brainer. But the "no-brain" candidates can't even figure out this "gimmee."

I'm still shopping for a new country in case the presidency is, once again, given to these clowns. Any suggestions???

the Clown Posse. What a bunch of idiots. When one is actually correct on an issue (McCain and waterboarding), his other beliefs disqualify him (sucking up to Bush, evangelists, etc.). What a sorry state for the party of Lincoln.

Lawyers, Qataris, and money

Curious that Giuliani Partners did business with various Qatari leaders and clients who sheltered and supported Khalid Sheik Muhammed before and after 9/11. Did GOP lawyers have anything to say about that?

The thing about attorneys like the ones that Romney and the GOP put their faith in is that attorneys get paid whether they give good advice or bad advice. When it's bad advice, nobody ever blames the attorneys - it's always the client's judgement that's skewered. This is a very convenient way to embed plausible deniability in the decision-making process of a politician's leadership structure. Corporate uber alles.

Why "consult" with anyone?

If he really wants to find out if waterboarding is torture, he should undergo the procedure himself. I'm sure Guiliani's campaign will gladly volunteer to administer the treatment.

--who relies on the likes of Blackwater's Cofer Black for advice. If that doesn't tell you enough about the clown who aspires to be president, you don't belong to be making decisions by voting.

Anyone who heads a mercenary organization like Blackwater has no business in our politics period! Would that give Romney his own private army? Just asking. What do you think?

.... should volunteer his 5 kids to try being waterboarded. If they refuse, he should quit the campaign immediately as morally unqualified. We already know that he is because he reversed most of his stances as gov. of MA. I hope those residents are as disgusted with Mitten as NYC people are with Guiliani.

I heard he tied his Irish Setter to the top of his car (at least the poor dog was in a carrier) and drove him 12 hours with his family on a trip to Canada while he was governor of Massachusetts (How does someone from UTAH get to be governor of a predominately Irish Catholic state anyway?)! Who is this guy? Michael Vick?

Now he's consulting with Blackwater about torture. My blood runs cold!
