How Naomi Klein's "Shock Doctrine" Explains The Taser Death of a Polish Man

Her L.A. Times piece which is a must read. But before I give you a taste, here is our very own Robert Greenwald on her important contribution to our current policy debate:

Naomi klein has written a brilliant book that explains and reveals the toll that disaster capitalism is taking all over the world.

Her op ed in the LA Times and this video bring the story to a very human level. The Shock Doctrine connects the dots in policy to allow us to understand how the system works and is important as we begin to look past Bush hatred to changing the system itself.

Now, your taste:

Much of the outrage sparked by the video, which was made by another passenger at the airport, has focused on the controversial use of Tasers, already implicated in 17 deaths in Canada and many more in the United States.

But what happened in Vancouver was about more than a weapon. It was also about an increasingly brutal side of the global economy -- about the reality that many victims of various forms of economic "shock therapy" face at our borders.

Rapid economic transformations like Poland's have created enormous wealth -- in new investment opportunities; currency trading; in leaner, meaner companies able to comb the globe for the cheapest location to manufacture. But from Mexico to China to Poland, they also have created tens of millions of discarded people, the people who lose their jobs when factories close or lose their land when export zones open.

Understandably, many of these people often choose to move: from countryside to city, from country to country. As Dziekanski appeared to be doing, they go in search of that elusive "normal."

But there isn't enough normal to go around, or so we are told. And so, as migrants move, they are often met with other shocks. A treacherous electrified fence on Spain's southern border, or a Taser gun on the U.S.-Mexican border. Canada, which used to be known around the world for its openness to refugees, is militarizing its borders, with lines between immigrant and terrorist blurring fast.

And now the money paragraph:

Dziekanski's inhuman treatment at the hands of the Canadian police must be seen in this context. The police were called when Dziekanski, lost and disoriented, began shouting in Polish, at one point throwing a chair. Faced with a foreigner like Dziekanski, who spoke no English, why talk when you can shock? It strikes me that the same brutal, short-cut logic guided Poland's economic transition to capitalism: Why take the gradual route, which required debate and consent, when "shock therapy" promised an instant, if painful, cure?

Klein really has put together one of the most dangerous trends gripping our world and our political culture (not to mention that of neo-conservatives abroad such as Tony Blair).

Now watch the video!

and weep for our lost country. It's the best indictment of this criminal administration and its corporate pig allies and enablers I have ever read.

I find it difficult in the extreme to be rational about this topic. I feel as if my hands are tied because I cannot express the vile inhuman hatred I feel for those who; because of their position in power and authority, lord it over those who are defenseless. Against taserings all normal humans are helpless.

Hear me here please, if you have never been tased and have no understanding of the process then for Gods sake get schooled up! Ignorance here pisses me off homicidally. For stupidity I have nothing, I do not excuse the stupid, that they cannot help, but even they are more teachable than the obdurately self enforced ignorant. Reason: the self enforced ignorant will allow themselves and their loved ones to be subjected to a police force that uses these methods of crowd control!

The only way to stop Taserings is to go to the Police departments, City halls, State Capitols, and any news paper offices En Mass and demand that it be stopped. Do not try to plan this just do it post it on billboards, bumper stickers, school Green boards, take out ads in the papers, that say in no uncertain terms: “Stop this bull shit with the Taserings private citizens will tolerate this no longer and will en mass disarm any officer carrying a Taser.” And then by F---ING God DO IT!

Tasers do Irreparable Neural Damage to limbs, brains, spinal chords, smooth musculature and ligaments. All Tasers can cause death depending upon the person we aren’t all responding the same to pulsed electricity. The use of a Taser should be looked upon the same as the use of any large caliber handgun, ESPECIALLY IF TWO ARE USED IN CONJUNCTION! All physicians know this even those proponents of E.C.T.*. Ignorance under the law is NO EXCUSE the Judges will tell you, then let them by God apply it to themselves along with their Legal arms and make Taserings Murder when no resistance is being offered.

The only difference between a modern Police Force participant and a Criminal is that the criminal is behind bars for his behaviour and don’t by God forget it! Do not be apologists for misanthropic actions, especially around mad men like me for on that day I will figuratively chew your ass off! We have hired cowardly murderous high handed inconsiderate punks to be our Police men. In my eyes that makes you John Q. Public Squarely to blame!

As for the crap about Tony Blair fornicate a bunch of Tony Blair’s, He’s a Canadian. I am talking about Inconsiderate, Irresponsible, Unresponsive, fellow U.S.A Citizens here! It is a strait path that must be followed, but if we do not we will deserve the fornicating we are going to get for the one we’ve already got!

Over the last 5 years I have noticed a severe degradation in the quality of life, and our freedoms. How much are we going to let slide before we become outraged and demand our real freedom back. It sickens me to think that we hold ourselves higher than the 'barbarian' nations that we plunder for oil. The western world is Rome, and I think I am actually glad that it is burning. Our pompous holier than thou sickness has turned out to be a serious, serious affliction that will kill us all.

Arrive with FIVE.
Arrive with CAMERAS.

The Alachua County Sheriff's Office says a Lieutenant didn't know a mother was pregnant when he tasered her stomach.

Excessive and lethal force? Amnesty International’s concerns about deaths & ill-treatment involving police use of tasers:

yup. TASERd someone... but the issue... is the foetus, not the expectation of Universal Human Rights...

"I asked Borden to lift up his foot to remove the shorts, but he was being combative and refused. I dry stunned Borden in the lower abdominal area …
We got Borden into the booking area. Borden was still combative and uncooperative. I dried [sic] stunned Borden in the buttocks area…"

After the final shock, the officer "noticed that Borden was no longer responsive and his face was discoloured."
(extract from officer’s statement on James Borden, a mentally disturbed man being booked into an Indiana jail.)(1)"
