Bill O'Reilly Runs Ads for the Same Anti-War Movie He Claims "Hurts Our Troops"

Matt Corley: Mark Cuban says the point of the ad buy was to see what O'Reilly's real motivation for attacking the film was.

For two months now, Fox News host Bill O'Reilly has been using his various media perches to criticize and attack Brian De Palma's controversial new film, Redacted, which was financed by Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. The film centers around a fictionalized portrayal of "the true story of a group of U.S. soldiers who raped and killed a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and murdered members of her family."

O'Reilly kicked off his campaign against the film with a column in September, saying the filmmakers "should be ashamed" because "they are hurting their own country." He sharpened his attacks last week, calling for a boycott of the "vile," "anti-American" film during multiple segments on his show. In a second column, O'Reilly compared Cuban and DePalma to Charles Manson:

There is no excuse for "Redacted." The incident is based on a true story, but those who committed the crimes are in prison for life. You don't celebrate this kind of aberration with a movie-you don't brand the U.S. military with this stigma.

Charles Manson is an American too, but does he represent this country in any way? Of course not. And I believe even the odious Manson would not make a movie like "Redacted."

Cuban hasresponded to O'Reilly's criticism by claiming that the Fox News star is mischaracterizing the film and attacking it without having seen it. Last week, in order to test "O'Reilly's motivation" for his campaign, Cuban bought ad time for the film during The O'Reilly Factor. The ad ran during the Nov. 15 edition of the show.

Watch a compilation of O'Reilly's attacks on Cuban and the ad he aired to your right.

According to Cuban, the point of the ad buy was to see if the issue "really was important to Mr. O'Reilly, or whether" he "would say whatever he needed to say to get more people to watch." Cuban said he had no problem whatsoever obtaining the time:

I had someone call FoxNews and tell them specifically, unequivocally that we wanted to run an ad for the movie Redacted. The same movie Bill OReilly was so upset about.

They said no problem. Do you want to run the ads in both the live show and the repeat?

Our first reaction was that this was just the sales department and at some point , someone at FoxNews would step in and stop the ads from running. The call to say they were stopping the ads never came.

The ad ran in both shows. Here is a link with Bill's smiling face at the end.

O'Reilly has yet to comment on the fact that his show is now profiting off the promotion of a film he claims is "hurting our troops and helping the terrorists."

the American people? Of course not.

Well big news-neither do O'Reilly or Fox News. In fact, all three suck.

OK. I'll be the whipping boy that asks the question some of us are wondering. Does Bill Oreilly know ahead of time which commercials will be airing and does he have any power to "veto" certain ones?

Mr. O'Reilly must be confused although thats hardly a surprize to me .Since when is it " Anti-American" to base a movie on the truth? Since when does Mr.O'Reilly have the right to claim that FDR would have had Mark Cuban imprisoned? He could have said that such was his opinion but claiming that it was fact is a bit hyperbolic. And does he truly believe that the making of this film will result in an appreciable increase of anti-american sentiment and lead to further casualties? The fact that his employers accepted the advertising is not unusual. It maybe hypocritical but it sure is "Pro-American".

Would you rather Fox News vetoed the ad buy? Wouldn't we criticize them even more vehemently for that?

O'Reilly is a wind bag. Just ignore him. There are plenty of examples of far greater hypocrisy than this.

Mr. O'Reilly, why is it that any form of protest against this government's holier-than-thou preponderance for unprovoked war against an unwilling people, your accusation is always the same? The protester "is against our troops", or "doesn't support our troops", or "supports the terrorists", or some other equally fallacious statement.

I'm sorry, Mr. O'Reilly, but your argument is illogical and bitterly misleading. You know, as well as I, that we support our troops, who have been placed in harm's way by an uncaring and Constitution-bashing president, and only wish you'd understand that we believe in first, truth and justice, and not the profit-motivated racketeering and snobbery of a government that's been bought-and-sold by the corporatist elite, at the expense of its governed.

No, Mr. O'Reilly, it is not our troops we don't support, because if we didn't we wouldn't be working so hard to get them home. Mr. O'Reilly, it is actually our government we don't support, and you know as well as I that our troops and our government are mutually exclusive in this discussion.

So, please, Mr. O'Reilly, stop pandering to the lowest common denominator, and try speaking for true democracy and justice. You may find it less burdensome and exhausting to lift the veil of hypocrisy and deceit-enabling behavior and, at the very least, you may find that the true nature of your being was always there -- to be a seeker of what is right; not what's profitable or convenient, just as our Founding Fathers sought over 200 years ago. Try it. You may be surprised just how good it feels.

Fox news and Bill O'Reilly cater to the tabloid news mentality of America. Fox news is tabloid America and Bill O'Reilly is tabloid America. I do not know why AlterNet gives this reactionary so much press. He probably offends over 80% of America and 100% of the rest of the world. He wants to proudly beat his chest and claim his American superiority. Is he in Iraq? Is he helping returning troops that have been physically and mentally damaged by marching to his drumbeat of kill the non-American?
