This post, written by John Halpin, originally appeared on Think Progress

The Center for American Progress, in conjunction with the Glaser Progress Foundation, recently launched a multi-year effort to increase public understanding of what it means to be a progressive given our nation's history and the challenges we face today.

The first part of the campaign involves a pilot experiment to begin defining progressivism in the public's mind through a series of distinct advertisements that explain the progressive movement's core values and policy ideas, its historical accomplishments, and its philosophical differences with conservatives.

Progressive reformers in the 20th century paved the way for a more humane society that ensured decent working conditions; fought corporate abuse and corruption; provided support for the elderly and unemployed; protected our natural resources; and expanded democratic opportunities for all citizens. Our ad campaign is a first attempt at bringing these progressive values and accomplishments to light for modern audiences.

We are just completing a three-week run of four ads in the Columbus, Milwaukee, and Indianapolis media markets. We look forward to hearing ideas from readers of Think Progress and other progressive blogs -- let us know what you think:

Editor's note: I've edited together two of the ads for your enjoyment

The term is liberal and dammit I'm proud to be a liberal. Until we stop running from republican labels we will not get anywhere.

... or call me a liberal, becuase:
"Liberalism is the supreme form of generosity; it is the right which the majority concedes to minorities, and hence, it is the noblest cry that has ever resounded on this planet. It announces the determination to share existence with the enemy; more than that, with an enemy which is weak." ~Jose Ortega Y Gasset

"The modern Conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy -- that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness." ~John Kenneth Galbraith

WARNING: Due to presidential executive orders and signing statements, and provisions passed by the previous Republican-controlled Congress, the National Security Agency may have read this posting, as well as and any other private correspondence of mine, and may listen to my private phone conversations without warrant, warning, or notice, and certainly without probable cause. They may also arrest me without telling me of any charges against me, even transport me outside the United States, and hold me secretly and indefinitely in an undisclosed location without notifying my wife or relatives, and deny me access to an attorney. They may take my property under the executive order of July 17, 2007, never to be returned. They may torture me without fear of penalty or repercussions to them for their actions. They may do all these things to me, or to you, with little or no judicial or legislative oversight. This danger became ever more apparent, and ominous, on Sept. 19, 2007, when the U.S. Senate failed to reinstate habeas corpus as an inalienable right of American citizens. I/We have no recourse nor protection save to call for the impeachment of the current president and vice-president, and voting to remove all rubber-stamp Republicans and neocons from office, as well as other elected officials acting only in their own interests instead of those of the People and the Constitution, be they occupying local, state, or national positions of authority.

Could somebody explain if Feinstein is a progressive, liberal, or neo-liberal?

This guy, is claiming she's a progressive.

But, right now lots of you liberals (socialists, leftists, progressives, whatEVER, neo-WHATevers) are pissed (or are supposed to be, anyway) about her position on progressive (or is it liberal) "things".

What's going on here? Who's what?

Remind ourselves where our "good life" sprang from...

These ads are exactly what will influence Americans. I love them.

I once reminded my right-leaning grandfather that his education, home, monthly Social Security checks, and much more, sprang from the New Deal and the work of the (then) progressive Democratic Party.

I didn't hear him cheering the Republicans tearing it all down any more.

"Thanks" to the Center for American Progress for reminding us that the "good life" sprang from progressive actions -- in spite of conservatives fighting tooth and nail against.

(Makes me think republicans/neocons/conservatives would like to see seniors starving, children uneducated and working alongside their parents to provide more wealth for the rich to steal. It appears repugs support soldiers only for battle, then discard them. Would repugs like to rape our national parks and send women back to the kitchen? I can't see how repugs stand for any postitve action, only positive (hypocritical) words.)

The Best Thing For The American Left I've Seen

Thank you! This is exactly what we on the left need to be doing. We tend to get so focused on individual issues that we aren't presenting the big picture to the American public.

When I ran for state office last year in a VERY Republican district I got to talk with a lot of people in my district. On numerous occasions I found myself thinking, "these people are Democrats, they just THINK they're Republicans."

We can waste a lot of time blaming the stupidity of the people, or the laziness of the people for not better informing themselves or we can accept the fact that for whatever reason the people are misinformed and try to work from that reality.

That's exactly what these ads do. It's like a remedial Civics class for the electorate. We can argue all day about what caused the need for the remedial primer, or we can just try to fix the problem.

in Oklahoma. The media is totally in the grip of BIG business. My brief, incomplete, search on the internet showed that SICKO played in one theatre briefly in the entire state. Molly Ivins sister publication in Oklahoma has a circulation of 25,000. That is twenty five thousand card carrying liberals in a whole state.
