McCain Says Supporter's "Bitch" Query About Hillary Is "An Excellent Question"

Obviously, presidential candidates aren't responsible for comments made by their supporters. Candidates are, however, responsible for showing a little class. It's apparently something that John McCain has forgotten.

At a campaign event in South Carolina, a McCain backer stood up to ask the senator, "How do we beat the bitch?"

In response, McCain said, "We have our differences with our Democratic rivals, but I believe in treating people with respect. It's why I don't refer to women as 'bitches,' even when I disagree with them. I'm sure all of us believe we can debate the serious issues of the day without name-calling and degrading language."

No, no, I'm just kidding. He actually responded, "That's an excellent question."

Just this morning, the NYT's David Brooks wrote a gushing love-letter to McCain, praising him as an honorable man of character. If there wasn't so much evidence to the contrary, it might be persuasive.

For readers who can't watch clips online, here's a transcript:

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: How do we beat the bitch? (Laughter)

Mccain: May I give the translation? (Laughter) That's an excellent question.

You might know that there was a poll yesterday -- a Rasmussen poll, to identify it -- that shows me three points ahead of Sen. Clinton is a head-to-head match-up. (Applause)

I respect Sen. Clinton; I respect anyone who gets the nomination of the Democrat [sic] Party....

Yes, McCain couldn't even be gracious about his political opponents without using the grammatically wrong "Democrat Party."

I suppose the natural response from McCain backers is that he didn't want to repudiate a campaign supporter during an event. But just a few days ago, McCain repudiated his own mother, on national television, when she made anti-Mormon comments about Mitt Romney. He went out of his way to make clear -- twice -- that he didn't agree with his mother's remarks.

But when confronted with a supporter who calls Hillary Clinton a "bitch," McCain thinks that's "excellent."

Stay classy, John McCain.

Digg!

A womyn asked the question. McCain is a male, and a white male at that.

So he is a part of the racist, classist, patriarchal society and therefore cannot be expected to question the propriety of a womyn's question. If McCain himself uttered the term "bitch" and he was not a rap "artist" he would be guilty of sexism. However, in this case a womyn used the term. She has every right to do so since she herself is a victim of the sexist society. McCain has no right to question a victim.

Oh, please! It doesn't matter one whit whether it was a man or a woman making an ad feminen attack on Clinton. Civil discourse should be a goal that we all can at least aspire to, and all candidates should be held to it as a standard. The writer's retort of how McCain might have answered was perfectly reasonable and courteous. Too bad McCain has neither the class nor the smarts to even approximate such a decent and thoughtful response. Shame on him! We deserve much, much better.

A lot was said in his turning, pausing, laughing, and in the emotional environment of the room that a straight translation doesn't reflect- he didn't say, "put her down," nor , "let us not degrade ourselves with such naughty language," instead he spoke like a politician.
What's so bad about being a bitch, let alone the bitch, anyway?

It's pathetic to hear a woman call another woman a "bitch"! How sexist can you get? How ignorant, vile, and de-humanizing! And, Cain should have stood up against it. And, the laughter was revolting....! This is where our country is! In the sewer!

Symptomatic of Republican bullying behavior.

Note this tragically confused statement by Mr. McCain:

"I respect anyone who gets the nomination of the Democrat party."

This is how McCain, who claims to be an honorable man, was supposed to soften his enthusiastic endorsement of the "bitch" comment? By insulting her party?

It should be recognized that the repeated purposeful mispronunciation of something as basic as the name of a party is an extremely corrosive practice. As long as it is allowed to persist, the classic schoolyard bullying dynamics of the two parties will continue to damage both parties and the American people they represent. As this clip shows, the repeated and unchallenged use of one insult can easily degenerate into uglier ones. This is classic bullying behavior, and not at all appropriate to a Presidential candidate.

Obviously Republicans will not change this awful practice on their own. Democrats must insist on correcting this behavior every time it occurs, particularly on the floors of Congress. If they do, then perhaps Democrats will will gain a new perspective of themselves as something other than doormats for the Bush administration.

"At a campaign event in South Carolina, a McCain backer stood up to ask the senator, "How do we beat the bitch?"

We?

If current polls are accurate, McCain backers should worry about beating Romney and Giuliani. You know, first things first.

But maybe the question was merely rhetorical, because the possibility that McCain might have to beat Hillary Clinton is purely hypothetical.

McCain is totally tanking in the polls and I'm sure thinks this is the sort of thing that will help him with the Republican base. He's grasping at straws and any measure of respect I had for the man is now gone.

I doubt that "bitch" will be worst thing that Hillary Clinton is called between now and Nov 2008. Some of the comments left on past articles about her would make a sailor blush. See you next Tuesday!

What can we expect from candidate McCain who, in a public forum, jokingly sang, to the tune of a well known song, "bomb, bomb, bomb-bomb Iran."

I don't blame her. The early campaigning is already boring and non-productive. This is a non-event. I think it's "creative newsmaking". Anything to fill space. Thanks, ANNA

We keep hearing that Clinton has a commanding lead in the polls yet I cannot find ANYONE who says they would vote for her???!!! Is this the Republican newsfolks trying to push forward the one candidate that would divide the Democrats and if not at least be a nominee that the Republicans would have a chance to defeat?

I've seen this repeated several times here but no one seems to want to take it further?

John McCain and David Brooks

Just look at McCain hugging Bush and you can see how ridiculous this man would be as president. And look who loves McCain... Brooks!

David Brooks is an intellectual midget who bases all facts upon previous conclusions. Even a five-year old can think better than this.

How embarrassing it must be to be either of these. How embarrassing for a nation to raise either to anything above dog-catcher.

They and their supporters are indicative of our failing species.

Most of the people in the audience will be dead in the next five years. What was the criteria for that meeting; over seventy and white?
