Palestinian Hip-Hop Artist Belly Raps About His War-Torn Homeland In "History of Violence" [VIDEO]

Posted by Adam Howard, AlterNet at 11:00 AM on November 13, 2007.

Belly says, "If this puts me in the line of fire, then so be it. I felt I had to do this. I represent Arabs who don't want war, who are just like everybody else and that is 99% of us. I want people to see and hear that perspective."

Belly (aka Rebellyus), the Palestinian-born rapper who spent his first seven years living in war-torn areas of the Middle East, goes deep for his and all people in his new track and video for "History of Violence." The song is a powerful and vivid look at the hypocrisy and devastation of the war in Iraq and other Middle Eastern territories. Shot in the 'hoods of Ottawa's southside and West Montreal, "History of Violence" drew hip-hop heads from cultures around the world to participate, including Palestinians, Lebanese, Iraqis, Ghanaians, Haitians, Jamaicans, Somalis, Canadians, French Canadians and Americans, some bringing flags from their mother countries.

As someone of Arab descent, since 9/11 Belly has experienced his share of discrimination and that palpable feeling of ostracism comes through in "History Of Violence."

While the clip and lyrics are very pointed, Belly stands with his message. "If this puts me in the line of fire, then so be it," he emphasizes. "I felt I had to do this. I represent Arabs who don't want war, who are just like everybody else and that is 99% of us. I want people to see and hear that perspective."

He goes on to say, "Countries in the Middle East are systematically being occupied. The general public is being lied to about what's really going on. With wars of this magnitude, millions of people are affected, thousands lose their lives over decisions their leaders make. Terrorists kill innocent people. When the army does the same, how can we justify their actions? Fighting fire with fire is, obviously, not an idea that's been effective, so far."

This is the sort of work that comes forth when Hip Hop is at it's best. I've never heard of this artist before, but I'll be keeping an eye out, now.

all angels that now know Allah. The enormity of it all will not allow my silence any longer. I thought I could do this with pacifism, I cannot. I am enraged by these one dimensional reflections of the ending of lives that meant so much to so few. I despise the intolerance and my family being treated as though we have no value because of our religion, our culture, our color, our language(s). Imperfect as other's, no better in kind. We have not harmed anyone. We have not killed your children in America, you hate us because of the" 2% ".
No more marches until I tell people it must end, not just the Fu@@ing wars, the indignity towards anyone that is not like YOU. There are Muslim's, Christian's, Cubanas, Turkiye 'ye ozgu, Turce, American's and American English. When one of ours is killed in war, by terrorism, by any we all die.
I need bush gone, I need wars to end so we all stop being statistics, I DEMAND equality , no longer despite, in spite of our religions. The god loving, one religion makes it spite.
No more FU##ing malicious reason to call us names and humiliate my, MY daughter's. I will physically stop you from harming them any more. I won't allow it, no more...

Belly is an overrated image / mediocre rapper from the mean streets of Ottawa, Canada. He doesn't even really get dap in Toronto, albeit that don't mean nothing cuz the city is full of haters. But still, its kind of disingenuous for AlterNet to promoting Belly for the Palestinian cause, seeing as he is from the suburbs of a relatively crime-free city, and funded by Massari's father.

. . . and I take it all back.

Way to start making important music, Belly. I had previously been unimpressed with your thuggery, but this video won you new respect.
