This post, written by Manila Ryce, originally appeared on The Largest Minority

In the latest episode of 30 Rock, NBC creates a new mascot named Greenzo (played by David Schwimmer), to cash in on the environmentalist movement. Greenzo’s slogan is: “Saving the Environment While Maintaining Profitability,” and the character successfully promotes energy efficient GE products (like Gore does in real life) for the network. Unfortunately, the actor who plays Greenzo develops a conscience and becomes a real environmentalist. The network realizes they’ve lost control of him when he blames the super-rich on live TV for not doing enough to combat global warming. Greenzo gets fired for suggesting the rich should pay higher taxes, Al Gore is summoned, and hilarity ensues.

.. blame the super-rich for not paying enough in taxes to buy all the technofixes (from entities like GE) rather than point out that it is overconsumption by just about everyone in the US as well as a ballooning population and our continued raping of the landscape worldwide to provide wood products as well as to make grazing land for commercial beef production in the Amazon and other places that are at the heart of the real problem.

Nice...

Saint Gore strikes again.

Are Gore's Ideas Sustainable

"...tax CO2 emissions"

I have to admit I was caught up in Al Gore's global warming warning catastrophe message. But another "comments" post on Alternet (sorry, I don't recall where I saw it, and I'm too lazy to look it up) forced me to look critically at Gore's ideas for a solution to global warming.

And, this video clip forced me to do it again--damn it! I hate when my icons' weaknesses are exposed!

Nonetheless, Al Gore said something in this clip that reminded me he's still a free market fundamentalist neo liberal who believes the market can solve all problems--including global warming. Tax CO2 emissions! Taaaaxxx C....O....2 eeeeemissions. Let that sink in.

Okay, why is that a bad idea? For one, if I know corporations, they will just factor that into the cost of doing business, then, as soon as they can elect a leader who believes the tax is unfair...Presto Chango! the tax is gone.

But, the higher price remains.

I think we need to have real discussions about, say, rampant consumerism, corporate power and influence, global trade, and maybe the money corrupted political system. In short, we need to quit believing that this system works and a tweak here or there will ....make everything...better. Nighty, night, he whispered.

That's just my cynicism about politics these days. I'm sure others have great ideas about how to solve the global warming issue, catastrophe, what ever you want to call it, that would make much more sense. But, first, thank you Al (Nobel Prize) Gore for starting the discussion. This is where you step aside and let the critical thinkers step in to come up with some real solutions.

peace

If Gore really want to do some good, run for President so we're not stuck with these loosers Hillary and Obama. The way it's going, Rudy will be in next year and us Dems will all be scratching our heads on what went wrong.

Put up or shut up Al - the vanity appearences are getting tiresome.

I share your frustration, but my faith is in Gore's using all of this to show us how our democracy can have campaigns based on issues, not corporate funding. As Gore says in his interview in the latest "Rolling Stone":

"When enough unexplainable new phenomena pile up, there is sometimes a shift in consciousness that moves us quickly and suddenly to recognize a new pattern that explains all of these things that have been mysterious in the context of the old way of thinking. That's what we're on the cusp of right now."

Try the article at http://rollingstoneextras.com/rsdigitaledition/editionLg.php
and go to page 55 by way of the TOC button (Gore interview)

There is an excellent analysis of what all this interview means at:

Gore is already in the race, we just have to see the pattern.

Glad ya'll like the clip. Here's an earlier commentary of what I think about Gore's environmental attitude. The DFA part at the end of the video is out of date now, so ignore that. Peace.
