As we all know young Americans recruited for the military are often convinced that they are signing up for some kind of live action video game and are rarely given a sense of the horrors they're going to encounter abroad. The video to your right is a parody commercial for the marines crafted in the style of a pharmaceutical advertisement complete with warnings about side effects. Check it out.

It should be shown as a public service announcement (PSA) on every channel.

Yeah,,,I know--fat chance of it being shown on even one channel especially in the face of the presumed upcoming draft.

The only problem I have with it, is that it concentrates on the Marines, instead of all of our service branches that kill for empire.

Regards,,,John

Very well done!

The problem I see is that people who sign up for the military are simply stupid! Nothing will get through to them, not a thousand years of evidenced bogus militaristic atrocities, not their own parent’s generation coming back from Vietnam with PTSD and limbs missing, not a single bit of evidence about the gulf of Tonkin, nothing.

People who join up are like people who hunt: they just like to kill! They WANT to play video games with real ammo.

The truest WAR-CRIMINALS are these individuals who actually agree to train and deploy and massacre in illegal wars of aggression. No amount of evidence showing their culpability in war-crimes has any effect, they continue to kill, because they love it.

Enlisted career military are SOCIOPATHS committing atrocities which Jack the Ripper could have only imagined in his wet-dreams. The only punishment for refusing combat is apparently a month in the brig and a less-than-honorable discharge, hardly a punishment considering killing and dying under false pretext! So there simply is no excuse.

I too have thought of renting billboards and posting the reality of military service, but then there is no way that these goons could have NOT known what they were being trained to do!

So there is no fixing them, you cannot rehabilitate a mass-murderer. I have no patience whatsoever for veterans against Iraq wars or whatever, it's too little too late. A truly conscientious human of any kind would NEVER have agreed to do what they did. They knew better, yet did it any way! I don’t want them to come home, we’ve had too many generations of stinking park-bench-drunk destroyed veterans polluting society with their trauma and idiotic decision to become the grunt-wing of corporate USA.

Militarists are a minute fragment of the daftest, most idiotic fringe of society. Militarism is an ideology more insane than any religious evangelical wing-nut cult. No I do NOT "support our troops", I think they should instead be tried for WAR-CRIMES!

Valor and glory my ARSE, these people are killers, poorly paid ones at that. The more american service personnel who agreed to be deployed in this war, and continue to kill, who are maimed, killed, blinded, burned, distressed and disfigured, the more walking BILLBOARDS against militarism will exist.

But trust it will do NO GOOD whatsoever. 4% of the population are natural-born sociopaths. There will always be this genetic aberration of these individuals born without conscience. Either they will become the Al Capones of the world, or hunters, seal-slaughterers, or they will join up and find some legal excuse to relish in the bloodshed they crave. The only thing to do with these mutant goons is to get them off the streets, locked to a gurney, and fed meds.

Instead of trying to educate the brain-dead robo-cops of the world, why not just lock them all in a big thunderdome and let them all slaughter and devour each-other, like the flesh-eating ghouls that they are!

Seventeen and eighteen year-olds who don't know that militaries go to war?

What are you going to do? Blame public education?

My experience is that these sentient, young adults pretty much know what they are getting into, and the ones that don't often find convenient ways to burden their country sufficiently to be allowed to break their oath in the few weeks after shipping off to boot camp/basic training.

No. Most of them would seem to be walking forward with their eyes open, finding justification for trading a few years of potentially moderately risky assignments in return for money for college, a way out of a dead-end future, a potential career, the lure of "adventure", or to take care of their families (believe it or not, some base housing facilities are an upgrade for some families).

And that doesn't even take into consideration the increasing numbers of addicts, domestic abusers, and other criminals who need a change of scenery.

People join the military for various reasons and its not just the young. Where do you get off saying that career military personnel are mass murderers? Do you know anyone in the military or a VET, or generations of families serving in the military?
If people don't know what they're getting into, they will be weeded out in boot camp, plain and simple. Since I sense you're not military, you don't know what boot camp entails and the training that goes along with it.
I'm a VET and proud of it. I didn't joint for the obvious reasons, but I wound up doing twenty years and don't regret it at all. Since you're not military you cannot know about the comradery among military personnel that forges friendships until death.
I suggest you talk to some military personnel and not make such outrageous statements without some facts and stats to back it up.

THIS INFO COMMERICAL IS RIGHT ON TARGET BUT WOULD HAVE LITTLE AFFECT ON THOSE THAT WANT TO FIGHT IN A WAR.

THE EARTH CONTAINS ALL LEVELS OF SOULS AND SOME ARE STILL IN THE KILLING OTHERS MODE AS A SOURCE OF THRILL AND EXCITEMENT.

"A nation that spends more year after year on military offense (and I mean offense) than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death". (Gunnels)

FASCISM IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER FOR AMERICANS.

Before I get into that, let me point out that electronic imaging shows us that the human brain does not fully mature until around the age of 21. Teenagers do not recognise dangerous expressions on people faces, so perhaps failure to recognise danger in general may explain why they are such risk takers.

Now, if I were an uneducated young man or woman facing a life working at a MacJob, I would have to consider the alternatives--which are limited to crime, prostitution or the military. All these are dangerous to your health and well-being and, in a weak moment, the military might be very appealing. It offers a sense of belonging which might be missing in your life.

Even if you had better options in life, maybe your dad, having himself been militarized, might approve of you joining up. This could be especially powerful if he hadn't been around much to give you day-to-day confirmation of your worth.

To refuse to join might even imply criticism of him, something which might be very frightening.

What is the one thing that people will both kill and die for? Respect. And the military, especially when you are told that your country is at risk, offers a sure way to get some.

Once you have handed yourself over, you are bound into the system by going through the poor man's frat hazing, boot camp. Having endured the humiliation, you need to believe that the end goal is worth it. Otherwise you would have to admit stupidity.

The military takes the normal human longing for solidarity and respect, uses the power of captivity to humiliate and then gets to claim your lifelong loyalty because you will be loathe to admit you've been duped.

This is the kind of thing we should be teaching in our schools.

My step-brother and a neighbor kid are both in the military. They are both college grads (business and engineering degrees respectively) and both decided before they entered the world of business, they would serve their country proudly. They both have no regrets as they serve out their commitments. They are proudly serving in Iraq. I get my news from them, the people that I trust. They are not murderers or rapists. They are doing a job that they both believe in. We all want them to come home, when the job is completed.

2 US sailors shot to death in Bahrain

By ANNA JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 49 minutes ago

A U.S. Navy sailor allegedly shot and killed two female sailors early Monday in the barracks of a American military base in Bahrain, a Navy official said.

The alleged shooter, a male, was critically wounded in the shooting at the U.S. Naval Support Activity Bahrain base, said the Navy official, who was not authorized to release the information to the media and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The official did not say if the alleged shooter shot himself or if anyone else was involved, but the Navy said the shooting was not terror related and only involved U.S. military personnel.

The shootings took place around 5 a.m., the Navy said. Officials closed the base temporarily and reopened it about an hour later.

No other details were immediately available, and the Navy said it was not releasing the names of those involved until their families were notified.

"The incident is under investigation, and it would not be prudent to discuss details at this time," said Navy spokesman Lt. John Gay.

Bahrain, a tiny island nation on the Persian Gulf, is a U.S. ally and home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, which is responsible for an area of about 2.5 million square miles (6.5 million sq. kilometers) of water including the Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman and parts of the Indian Ocean.

About 3,600 personnel work on the U.S. Naval Support Activity Bahrain base, located just outside Bahrain's capital, Manama. The base supports U.S. naval ships in the region.

John Rice is right, it'd be improved by editing together ads for all branches of the U.S. Military.

The real tragedy is that in a soldier-cult like 'Merkuh this sort of rational critical thinking ability reflected in the big pharma style disclaimers falls on so many deaf ears if for nothing more than 'Merkaans want to believe in their fantasies so badly, they'll willing join the suck in order to live them out. The blind fantasies of "serving with honor" and "doing their job" are no longer sufficient for a reasonable and educated citizen. To willingly believe in a fabricated cultural myth that has such lethal consequences for millions of others as well as oneself requires a serious intellectual disconnect. Ironically in the 1950's folks like that were often institutionalized and given electro-shock "therapy." Strange how cults work, eh?

I was in the military for 20-plus years and worked as a Government Civilian around the military for a few more.
There were very few I met that were out to go to war or kill. The majority felt a sense of duty to country. Can you say they were tricked into our most recent war -- yes. But just because they stay in while the war rages, does not mean they are immoral killers who want the war to continue.
Many good Non-comissioned officers stay for the simple reason of to take of their young charges. If they leave their spots will be filled by just the type of leaders you claim they all are. Many younger troops stay, because they feel obligated to their buddies and do not want to leave good friends to face an enemy alone.
Hundreds I know currently in service, wish the war was over and had been handled correctly, but they feel obligated to bring stability to a region our Government has disrupted, because what they here from back home is that they are the ones who screwed it up. Many of them isnist on going back tour after tour to prove to people back home that the military are not the bad guys.
Don't forgte that it is airmen, sailors, marines and soldiers that are rebuiding Taliban destroyed towns in Afghanistan. It is Military medical teams that are helping in hotspots in the Horn of Africa.
I know you will claim it is propaganda, but if you want to see some of the good things your military is doing, try looking at the military's own websites. Look up humanitarian or Provisional Reconstruction Team or International Zone Police at the Air Force site. You will also get the other stuff that you like to slam them for, but at least it will be moer than what you see on CNN or written by one of the selectively chosen Alternet writers.
Two weeks ago an Air Force photographer was shot while taking photos -- I can only imagine the atrocity he was committing with that camera.
A convoy was returning from a remote Iraqi village where they had just provided medical relief and delivered food to people who were being terrorized by some local criminal types. Some were killed and injured by the IED placed on the road side.
I guess most of you think that is a deserving end for the men and women in the convoy.
I’ll use another post to address how similar the military is to the rest of our public, especially the un-educated part. I am sure this post will get me the entire “liar, Repukelitan, fascist, Die in Hell” response from my “dear friends” who think their opinion equals fact and all other opinion equals Lie.

You guys are completly retarded. I hapen to be one of those "Stupid Military Guys," and it's not that we want to get shot, blown-up, or dismembered, we are just doing our jobs. We do that job because it keeps people that have no goals in life except to kill americans, in a county where there arn't many americans. When we get a new president and he/she pulls us out, thier people will come here. When they do they wont bother with military that fight back, they will attack civilians who run and hide. So next time you want to dog the guys keeping your bum ass alive, imagine what it would be like to fight them your self, in your own city...

Sincerely,
