Black says, "Let me get this straight, Republicans read the Sunday Times, and it's an ad that gets them angry!?"

This post, written by Manila Ryce, originally appeared on The Largest Minority

To draw attention away from the war itself, congress decided to legislate free speech by condemning a full-page ad by Moveon.org criticizing General Petraeus. Democrats allowed the pointless amendment to pass the Senate and a similar resolution to pass the House, but after being lambasted by their base for being spineless, they insisted the Republicans also denounce Rush Limbaugh. With the petty one-ups-manship between these two incompetent parties in a time of war, it’s no wonder that Congress has an even lower approval rating than the president. Never missing the opportunity to contribute their emissions to a climate of idiocy, Fox News reminded us that what’s really important are symbols meant to represent your patriotism, not the actual intent of your actions.

Crazy Like Fox

Though I realize that it is just too easy not to point and laugh at Fox "News", at some point, wouldn't it just be better to ignore them? I mean, because, it really is too frustrating to try and make sense out of their reasoning. It's like watching a bunch of people who are very determined to be unhappy and ugly about everything and everyone, to everyone--because they're really insecure or just want everyone else in their little group to like them. I don't know. Maybe it's a disorder. And maybe people should be warned when they start sounding like a Fox News reporter. Something like, "Hey, dude, are you okay? Because you're starting to sound like Fox News. I really think you should talk to someone. I mean, other than your imaginary friend."

WWII: Support the Troops=Sacrifice and Collective National Pride. TODAY? Jingoism and Shame.

In WWII, people were made part of The War effort through need and to feel that they were contributing to the efforts to make the nation successful in a RIGHTEOUS endeavour.

They saved gum, for tires; flattened "Tins for Troops," and Airplanes and equipment; Conserved on Gasoline with knowledge of how much gasoline it took to keep ONE Bomber in the air for a specific duration and how many were needed; tobacco was rationed so the troops could have this "need" at the time; Victory Gardens were grown to make up for the lack of tinned foods; You Gave to ASSIST the TROOPS TO VICTORY IN A RIGHTEOUS WAR.

TODAY? John Edwards asked people to give up their SUV's to aid the country in lessening it's dependence on the middle-east for a great deal of our domestice economy. The reaction? HELL NO! Along with the HELL NO!! for the SUV's (that never go off the road i.e. Cadillac Escalade), the same holds true for: snowmobiles, ATVs, powerboats, and any other gasoline fueled "fun-generated" invention for the "boys toys" target-market of males who never got over the fact they couldn't LIVE in their "Hot Wheels."

The "HELL NO!" I met to one query of giving up an SUV was due to a poor excuse of, "How would I get out of my driveway without one?" Perhaps, now with the improvement of roads and private drives in the last 62 years, and the increase in horsepower of cars, you could just drive out, or be as innovtive as those, who during The War years had NONE of the advancements in snowclearing that you and the government have today? Maybe, if you OWN ONE, you could pick-up a shovel? Or perhaps going to the mall, just to see what there is to purchase, can be put off until it is easier to drive without having to sacrifice for the troops?

The current ultra-right wing lambastes the "lefties" for all their "greenies and Birkenstock wearing" but the "leftie" lifestyle contributes more towards supporting this country than those who feel that it is their GOD GIVEN RIGHT to let OTHERS SACRIFICE AND DIE for them to have all their trinkets (SUV's, snowmobiles, jet-skis, atv's, garden tractors, 2nd homes, etc). What have THEY DONE for the TROOPS they so BLATANTLY CALL OUT AS BEING THEIR BIGGEST AND MOST JINGOISTIC Patriots?

A lapel pin is worth NOTHING if you have no foresite to back it up with actions, not sloppily used arguements to tear down the country by destroying those who disagree, but also because your sincerity in wearing it is always in question. Did he wear that to "seem like a 'proud' American? If so, why does he behave like that?"

His/her behaviour shames the nation in front of a world where some still remember the nation's resilience and sacrifice during The War. Now? All we have are greedy, "I got mine, you CANNOT TAKE IT AWAY!" instead of a President who fosters hope, we have one who fosters and depends upon fear to successfully implement the destruction of the constitution.

Oh,yes, we have come a long way in 62 years.

BUT, have we grown-up or reverted?

I love Lewis Black . He hit the nail on the head with a sledge hammer. I am sorry that I do not feel that the emblem of our country should be worn as jewlery or shirt patches, or as we have all seen, ass patches on jeans. The flag is our Nation's emblem, not a fashion statement. It is too important for that.

Can we talk about the word "culture"? It's a big one. American discourse on the media, in Congress, in the Senate, in the sports and entertainment industry is a constant commentary on American culture. Where has it gone? What has it become? Don't know how you rescue it other than reading, writing, and talking. Don't let anything go by. Challenge the inanity everywhere. Lewis Black, Bill Maher, Bill Moyers, Al Gore...make them household names everywhere. It's a life's work. It's for the young. Maybe the name Coulter will be forgotten some day. There is only one thing worse than being talked about....not being talked about.

Black nails it...again

I admire Lewis Black, and will always stop to hear his rants. I value his insights for their satirical art, their thoughtful prose and the intellectually stimulating vibe. Other commentators such as Bill Moyers, Keith Olberman, Jon Stewart, Michael Moore and Lewis Lapham also deliver the same stern stuff, often delivered with a laugh or softened by the careful deliberation of a strong humanism. Black, and others, do an important duty - holding a mirror close enough for not only observation but the cold light of reflection. Our culture has rejected self-reflection. I think author/mountain guide/philosopher Jack Turner nailed it with this comment, quoted from an essay in his superb The Abstract Wild - "The reduction of social criticism to private defect is incessant in our culture; it cripples our outrage and numbs our moral imagination." And he wrote that in 1996!
Lewis Black, and his smart and funny compatriots in satire, are no wackos. They do not allow themselves to be numbed - they fully access and use their outrage to seek out and share truth. Which is exactly what the government does not want...an enlightened, culturally sensitive and responsive citizenry.
Keep roaring Lewis!

...is now, and has been a symbol of the Shrub administration since 911, and to be worn proudly like a swastika.

When this country cleans the blood, lies and evil off of the colors so that I can see what it USED to represent, I will wear it and fly it again. It is now a disgrace to our founding fathers, and I doubt they would wear one either.
