Arab Women's Group Unfairly Subjected to Media Witch Hunt

Somewhere in Brooklyn, NY there is an organization dedicated to teaching leadership skills and educating young women in community organizing, art and media skills. The goal of this incredible organization is to empower these young, and let's face it, most likely over looked young women to become leaders in their own communities. Somewhere in this organization there is a young Majora Carter on the verge of being a community activist; the next Maya Lin is learning her craft; more than a few young women are discovering their power. Sounds like an incredible group, right? How could anyone want to bring them down? In a show of what can only be considered racism at it's worst, this organization became the center of a controversy that began in August of this year. You see the previously mentioned group is Arab Women Active in the Arts and Media (AWAAM). This summer the group, made t-shirts that said Intifada NYC.

Intifada: Arabic translation - shaking off.

Close minded, post 9/11, typical reactionary racist translation: OMG, they're going to kill us all!

And so the witch hunt began.

Reporters began showing up at the organization's building, Debbie Almontaser, who is in no way connected to the group was forced to resign from her post as Principal of the Khalil Gibran International Academy as a result of explaining how the shirt should most likely be interpreted: "it's pretty much an opportunity for girls to express that they are part of New York City society . . . and shaking off oppression." Almontaser was smeared in the press because of this statement.

AWAAM is an anti-oppression group. This is a grassroots organization - not sleeper cell, where Arab and Muslim young women - not terrorists, are taught to empower themselves, respect themselves and as a result become contributing members to their communities. It's always reassuring to know that in 2007, when we're supposed to have reached a point of sophistication and tolerance, people can be duped into hysteria of Orwellian proportions.

This video is a response to the controversy from the voices of the young women it affected.

All the time I was listening to this, I was thinking, THESE GIRLS SHOULD BE GIRL SCOUTS!

They are doing it, they should join. Their teachers and/or other adults can sign up as the leaders, get a crash course training event from council if necessary.

Can you imagine the press on that one? I do think GS would be all out to support them. I really think so.

Also, I want to order a T shirt. Could you please post ordering information here for your fans and supporters to order them from you? I am willing to pay up to $30 for a nice one but I am hoping for cheaper. Thank you!

It's pathetic that we must constantly remind readers that ALL Arabs and Muslims are not terrorists. You would think this would be a "known known." The media has done its job well.

And the author also left out something we all know as well: exactly what sort of group made this T-shirt an issue. No, it wasn't the NY Irish.

Debbie Almontaser, the fired principal of Kahlil Gibran — an Arabic immersion school — was replaced by Danielle Salzberg, a non-Arabic speaking Jew.

Take that, you motherfucking Arabs!

My 17 yr old Muslim daughter threatened regularly

I empathize with every tear that runs down my face for these young women. My daughter is fair haired and fair skinned, this is not always an asset. My husband is Turkish and our daughter is Muslim, she is proud of her religion, she chose her religion, she is verbally and physically harrassed for her religion.
I no longer belong in what is left of the nation I once knew, the illegal invasions and murders of civilians, Muslims, by our Administration. No longer are tolerance, humanity and peace, ideals viewed in a positive way by many in the USA.
To form such malignant hatred because of what is a guarenteed right, I suppose like many of the prior freedoms we were promised in our Constitution and Bill of Rights.
Due to al-Qaeda, PKK and other terrorists groups that have twisted Islam to suit their means to an end, all Muslims are treated as murderers, pigs, heathens, traitors and it is now a pandemic.
For all who truly value peace and freedom we must unite and make our voices heard, for I believe there are many, too frightened to raise their heads, let alone the strength in their voices united as ONE. We must start now, for all that is human and humane.

Where is NOW

Why haven't we heard from NOW about the honor killings? Women being stoned to death. Or how about all the cases of genitalia mutilation? Having their clits cut out. What is NOW's position on that?

I guess it's because these brutal acts are being carried out by.........Muslims.

While I think it is a great way to co-opt the word for a more peaceful cause and bring attention to Palestinian suffering, this is the process. They are going to be denounced, misunderstood and persecuted. What did they think was going to happen when they started wearing t-shirts with Intifada plastered on the front around NY city. The word, regardless of its applicability to their cause, is too misunderstood and charged.

The Jewish owned media

just can't stop taking another shot at Arabs. They sure hate them don't they? There should be laws targetting Zionist propoganda - be it believe in the Exodus or simpel hate speech found in the above article.

Did ya'all know that the Entertainment Editor of the Danish newspaper which notoriously published those "Muslim cartoons" is Mr. Fleming Rose a recent immigrant to Denmark, and the son of Zionist parents. And let's keep in mind that not all Zionists are Jews, very few Jews are Zionists. It is Zionists I am concerned with here.

Although Rose claimed he published those cartoons under the guise of "freedom of speech" he is a confidant and admirer of what Wikipedia calls "America's number 1 Muslimophile" Mr. Daniel Pipes. He is founder of "Campus Watch" and seeks to stifle academic debate on US universities.

This raises the question of Rose's real motivation behind publishing those cartoons. Yet we heard no mention of any alterior motives in the media.

Interesting that Walt and Mearsheimer made no mention of "Israel's Fifth Column" working to win the hearts and minds of American's through media ownership. Doesn't this media ownership serve to buttress the lobbying of Zionist interests? Nowhere else in the world will you find such a biased populace as found in the US. I believe this is so due to the massive mis-information campaign as waged by Zionist interests.

Discuss.
