The clip to your right features writer Naomi Wolf on The Colbert Report talking about her book, The End of America, A Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot, which outlines ten steps that "fascist, totalitarian, and other repressive leaders [employ to] seize and maintain power, especially in what were once democracies.” The ten steps are:

1. Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy

2. Create a gulag

3. Develop a thug caste

4. Set up an internal surveillance system

5. Harass citizens' groups

6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release

7. Target key individuals

8. Control the press

9. Dissent equals treason

10. Suspend the rule of law

Naturally an in-character Colbert tries to challenge Wolf's points, shouting "USA number one!" Check out the video to your right for more.

I've come to believe that terrorist organizations would have been dealt with by now if we had Gore as president. Instead of doing things in an intelligent manner and working/dealing with the nations that actually support terrorist groups, Bush and the Neocons decided to use 911 to their advantage.

They wanted to keep us scared so they could plunder the middle east. By their actions, they have generated more and more hatred towards the US. Our country's actions have been instrumental in helping these organizations grow and recruit more followers.

This was never a threat that was as large or ominous as that of both Germany (WWII) and Russia (Cold War). This is different. Whereas with Germany or Russia, we had to deal with massive armies. From 1935 to 1945, an estimated 18 million men served in the German military. Regarding the terrorist organizations, do you honestly think that we are dealing with that many people? We are the elephant that is scared of the tiny mouse.

the USA is quite the terrorist themselves. Gore would have been more of the same.

With a subject as serious as this, the normal run of things by Colbert just doesn't wash. If he wants to be funny he'll have to choose guests that are not purveying messages as grave and menacing as Ms. Wolf's. Pretty hard to find any humor in what she was saying.

And, we continue to allow Bush and his administration to "lead" this country?! Wow...impeach him, someone! Please! The rise of neofascism is strong in this country and the ordinary media, citizenry, Congress are doing NOTHING! I'm sending this video to all my relatives and friends.

I think Stephen Colbert just gets better and better. Those who pick at him with petty quibbles are simply missing how brilliantly he plays his stupid O'Reilly TV persona right into the hands of a guest like Naomi Wolff. He winds up underscoring her points while rendering those on the Right the absurd and moronic buffoons that they are. Bravo!

Unbelievable that someone like Wolf would be so accurate in pointing out the 10 steps towards Fascism yet support the Democrat's best chance for continuing in Bush's goosesteps (Hillary). What a neocon, warmongering, Senator they have in NY!

Colbert, through his foolish comments, has enhanced exactly what Klein was talking about, although I certainly feel that the subject at hand is dead serious and Americans should really take heed in her analysis. Klein is dead on. Unless something is done soon about America's facist direction, there will be no America tomorrow. Today's leaders are traitors of democracy.

As we all know, "democracy" is just a tool...

...by which people exercise voice in government. It was never "just supposed to take care of things", and I'm not sure who thinks it should, outside (some) of the parade of fools in the administration. Democracy and freedom are never necessarily entertwined. At worst, democracy is "two wolves and chicken voting on who's for dinner".

Our Constitution, which forms the basis of our Republic isn't even where we derive our freedoms: our freedoms are our birthright as citizens of this country. Our Constitution simply and specifically excludes our government from walking over them.

A tad off-topic, that's why I find these "Marriage Amendment" proposals so disgusting. The purpose of our Constitution is NOT to tell the people and their states what they can do, by and large; its purpose is to tell our government what it can't do.

Whether or not you support a 'reduction in nationalist tendencies' as the interviewee does, a drastic reduction in the scope, breadth, and authority (sometimes assumed, rather than granted: see the unPatriot Act) of this Federal Government is obviously quite necessary for the maintenance of a republic that respects our fundamental freedoms.

The Pyramid's Vortex

Oh, c'mon! You guys must know that the audience cheering at the "USA#1" was totally real. I'll even guess that quite a few stood up to clap, like when they see it being done en masse by the whole! Congress when one of the selected front-benchers do it in front of Baby Bush. (Is bowing passé? They'll have to do something about that when they install Hillary behind that lectern)

We are all a bunch of lemmings in 'auto,' and that is exactly what this Naomi is telling Colbert about the insidious slithering of fascism into everyday brainwashing by our proto-neocon Straussian media. We must surrender to belief that through the All-Seeing-Eye atop the pyramid of the nowadays not-so-almighty-buck they are the ones who know what is better for you. Greenspan anyone? Fascism indeed!

I agree that Colbert is doing an extra-good parody of Heil O'Reilly, but at times he is so keen into being funny that he is just wasting the guests rare and precious air-time. But I'm very pleased she got the chance to analogize Bush and Stalin's about their 'gulags' and 'sleeper cells.'

how many people would see her and where would he steer the conversation?

The Colbert/Stewart school of satire/parody is the only way messengers like Ms. Wolf and their message get on the msm and seen by a wide audience.

As for the "war on terror", please look into Operation Gladio and Operation Northwoods and you'll be able to see who the real terrorists are. While you're at it, look at Norman Mineta's testimony before the 9/11 Commission shown on CSPAN and available on YouTube.

The more you look into the events of 9/11/01 the more you'll realize that the government conspiracy theory has no real evidence to support it and can't be true.

Restore the Constitution.

Defend the Republic.

Impeach Cheney now.

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

2. Elect Chris Rock or any other black man/woman (Just not Uncle Tom Obama):

treason

I was accused of treason by the CIA in the American embassy in 2002. The same guys who used the preditor drone to bomb that car of arab citizens of yemen.

Although I was working for Deloitte and Touche the CIA accused me of working for Al Quieda because Deloitte and Touche was consulting at SabaFon owned by AL Ahmar the presidents brother as well as enemy to Bush probably because of the ties with Sadam and they did not renew the Hunt oil contract.

As well as I was almost killed in the conspiracy which someone hit me on the head and disabled me. No one would give me rights as a citizen attacked in between 2 beligerant states.

I called all the groups including the UN and until now there is no organization willing to protect citizens against illegal aggression. I am glad they did not charge me with treason because they probably would of killed me. It would probably make more sense though if they just kill people and cover it up instead of going with the legal hassel.

One of the US military officials told me to report it to my Congressman and I did yet he did not take the appropriate actions to protect me.

I know by this experience there is no human rights and US government does not work for citizens.
